The Word of the Lord

First Reading: Zephaniah 3:14-18a Zephaniah urges the people of Jerusalem to rejoice because the Lord is in their midst. He conveys the message that God will love and protect those who have remained faithful to him.

Second Reading: Philippians 4:4-7 Paul encourages the Philippians to be ready for Christ. He tells them not to worry about their concerns, but to instead ask God's help and allow his peace to fill their hearts and minds.

Gospel: Luke 3:10-18 John the Baptist answers people who ask him what they should do, leading some to believe he was the Messiah. John clearly states that he will be followed by one so powerful that "I am not fit to loosen his sandal strap."

St. John’s Family Page

I am baptizing you with water, but one mightier than I is coming. I am not worthy to loosen the thongs of his sandals.

Last Sunday, we heard John the Baptist announcing the importance and urgency of turning away from sin. Today, John the Baptist is telling the people of his day what conversion is about. Teacher, what should we do? This question was asked by three different groups of people in today’s gospel. The question that they were really asking: what am I to do to keep my life centered in Jesus Christ? John did not tell anyone in these three groups of people to convert and become a Jew or change their occupation. John told the soldiers to be honest, fair and faithful in the performance of their work. Similarly, John told the tax collectors, who were Jews, to be honest as well. John told the other group of Jews: Whoever has two cloaks should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should so likewise. In other words, practice the faith that your profess. The message is the same for us. Let’s not just signal that we want to change, to turn away from sin – but show the fruits of repentance. Jesus is calling us to be faithful in the ordinary circumstances of life, Keep doing the things we are supposed to be doing – going to Mass, praying, going to Confession, helping others in need.

John in speaking about Jesus said: He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. John’s baptism was a baptism of repentance. In accepting John’s baptism, it was a sign that they wanted to repent, to change their lives. We received the Holy Spirit at our Baptism. Through the intercession of Mary, who was always guided by the Holy Spirit, may we too be Spirit-filled and Spirit-led each moment of our lives. May God bless us all always! Deacon Mike

CCD Schedule: CCD will not be in session the week of December 23rd and December 30th. CCD will resume on January 7th.

Bereavement Group There is a support group for those grieving the death of a loved one here at St. John the Apostle. The group provides a Christ-centered experience for those grieving the loss of a loved one. The group offers a caring, compassionate, confidential atmosphere for the sharing of experiences. If you are interested in joining us, or if you would like more information about the group, contact Deacon Mike at 732-388-1253 or [email protected]. All calls are confidential. Pre-registration is required.

Children’s Liturgy

The Children’s Liturgy will be held at the 10:30 AM Mass. Families with children should just come to Mass as you normally do. Children will have their own Liturgy of the Word, including a special teaching just for them! Volunteer teachers are needed. If interested, please contact Deacon Mike: [email protected] 732-388-1253 Do you want to learn about the Bible? Examine the four pillars of our Catholic Catechism: faith, morality, prayer and the sacraments through the Scriptures. St. John the Apostle’s Frank Tremmel will be instructing the session, providing us with an overview to help us know and experience the power of Word of God. The next session on January 8th will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the teacher’s lounge. Attendance will also qualify towards the Doctrinal portion of Catechist Certification. Contact Deacon Mike to register or for more information, 732-388-1253 or [email protected]

Page 5___________ ______________THIRD SUNDAY OF ADVENT DECEMBER 16, 2018

A FRESH PERSPECTIVE ON THE SUNDAY READINGS HIS WORD TODAY by Rev. William J. Reilly

Third Sunday of Advent December 16, 2018

“Everyone should see how unselfish you are. The Lord Himself is near. Dismiss all anxiety from your minds. Present your needs to God in every form of prayer and in petitions full of gratitude. Then God’s own peace which is beyond understanding will stand guard over your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.”…“The crowds asked John ‘What are we to do?’…the people were full of anticipation…”

At the midway point of Advent, we too can ask the question the crowds put to John the Baptist. We might preface it with another question: ‘What have we done thus far?’ What is the Lord asking of me during the next ten days? St. Paul is quite clear telling his audience to focus on the Lord, offering prayer, petitions and expressions of gratitude.

Do not fall into the trap of routine or busyness, without a moment each day of prayer that God’s peace may reign in your heart. Our novena of preparation can consist simply by turning to the Word of God, reflecting on the mystery of Jesus’ coming, and how we want Him to find us when we celebrate His birth. Then God’s own peace will be really with us.
