ST. JOHN NEUMANN

Congratulations to Our RCIA Elect and Candidates! On Sunday, March 1, we celebrated the Rite of Election and the Call to Continuing Conversion at the Cathedral with our RCIA catechumen and candidates. In the Rite of Election the

Church ratifies God’s call of the unbaptized and accepts them into the order of the Elect. In the Call to Continuing Conversion, the Church officially recognizes the baptized who are seeking full communion with the Church through the Easter Sacraments. Our elect and candidates are now in their final phase of preparation to join us at the table of the Lord at the Easter Vigil on April 11. Please continue to pray for our RCIA elect and candidates! Craig Bailey, Dustin McFarland, Ricky Meineke.

Prayer for the Second Sunday of Lent – Listen to HimHeavenly Father, by turning to Your Son in faith and answering His call to holiness, all the communities of the earth find blessing. Help us listen to Your beloved Son, especially when other voices also call out to us. Attune our ears to the words He speaks. Open our

hearts in mercy, humility, compassion, and love. Give us courage and wisdom to set forth from places that are familiar and go where you send us, to walk steadily forward, confident that our final destination is Your eternal kingdom. Through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Evening Prayer Service – Tuesday, March 10…Please join us this Tuesday, March 10, for our Pastoral Area Evening Prayer Service. The service will be held at 7:00 p.m. at Corpus Christi Church. Please join us for this time of reflection as we seek

God’s help in living out our walk of faith and offer Him thanks for all the many ways in which He shows His love to us.

Lenten Fasting and FeastingFast on those things that separate us from God and others, andFeast on those which lead us along the path of Love.

Fast from apparent darkness; Fast from self-concern;Feast on the reality of light. Feast on compassion for others.Fast from thoughts of illness; Fast from personal anxiety;Feast on the healing power of God. Feast on eternal Truth.

Lenten Almsgiving Project: Create the GoodCreate the Good is helping support the Corpus Christi Food Pantry in its efforts to provide Easter dinner for those in need. The Pantry is a collaboration between the Cincinnati Freestore/Foodbank and our three parishes (St. John Neumann, St. John

the Baptist, and Corpus Christi). The Pantry doors are open to those who live in the boundaries of all three parishes, and those established by the Freestore/Foodbank. Its mission is to serve those in need with compassion, respect and a Christ-like servant attitude. Thank you for your support of this caring ministry.

From the Desk of Fr. Kyle Schnippel Week two of Lent, and the temptation to break the Lenten observances might be getting stronger and stronger. Yet, the call to remain faithful is even stronger, and the Lord constantly reminds that He rewards faithfulness. Stay strong to the commitments and let us encourage each other to the greatness in the Lord to which we have been called. This year, in particular, as we continue through the Gospel of Matthew (with a side trip through the Gospel of John over the next three weeks), the episodes presented for the Gospel at Mass are so rich in detail and imagery, that they provide wonderful resources for prayer and reflection. And with prayer being a primary pillar of Lent, these Gospel passages in particular can really help to enter into the mystery of the season and prepare for the glory to come at Easter.

There are lots of ways to pray with the Scripture, perhaps the most famous is Lectio Divina, the "Divine Reading" of a particular passage of Scripture. This method has one read the passage multiple times to drive deeper into an understanding of this particular passage. It is a time-honored practice and one that bears good fruit for many people.

Recently in my own prayer, I have slowly adapted this practice. My temptation is always to look at things in a very logical and analytical way, as it is just the way my brain works. But there is way more to prayer than just "thinking" about a particular passage. While our reason may lead the way, the passions are the engine that can drive us forward.

To that end, I try to sit with the particular passage while asking the question: "What do I feel in this passage?" When Jesus asks a question of His disciples, how does that stir up a particular emotion? Or in today’s Gospel passage, if I were there and saw the Glory Cloud come down on the mountain top, if I heard the Voice from the cloud boom forth with "This is my Beloved Son," what would stir up from the depth of my being?

Approaching the Scriptures in such a way can move one from Christianity being just an exercise of the brain, to one of being an experience of the heart. Admittedly, both approaches are necessary; but without the heart being engaged, we remain lifeless and still. Here, I think of the Lord God restoring Israel in Ezekiel 36, which He does first by changing their hearts from stone to living flesh, before He restores the "dry bones" in Ezekiel 37.

The heart moves us forward, directed by our reason and thought. As we continue through this great season of Lent, may the Lord continue to reform and reshape our hearts so that they can come alive and drive us forward to experience the glory of Easter in a few short weeks.

In Christ,Fr. Kyle Schnippel

Think About These Things (c.f. Phil 4:8)… Communion to the Sick When family members, friends or neighbors are hospitalized or enter a nursing home, there is often a concern of how they can receive communion. Many hospitals and nursing homes have chaplains or local parish volunteers who ensure that communion is distributed regularly to those who cannot be with us. We have a small group of parishioners who volunteer their time to minister to those members who cannot attend mass on Sundays. At the weekend masses, laypeople come forward to receive the Eucharist for the sick or homebound, and they bring forward a pyx for Father to place the host inside. The pyx is a small round receptacle, usually gold or silver in color. A pyx can come in a size small enough to only fit one or two hosts, or larger ones for those who visit many in one day (a nursing home or hospital visitor may use a larger size). Often those who regularly take communion to the sick keep their pyx in a small pouch, called a burse. Who can administer communion to the sick? Any Catholic who is fully initiated into the Church (having received Baptism, Eucharist, and Confirmation), is a practicing member of the Church, desires to share the faith with others, and understands the sacred ministry of bringing Jesus to those who cannot be at mass. Often family members would like to bring communion to their own family members or neighbors. Please see one of the staff members or deacons before mass, and we can provide a pyx and booklet with the proper prayers for administering the Eucharist. If you are interested in volunteering as a minster to the sick and homebound or know a parishioner who would like to receive communion, please contact the parish office for assistance.
