A LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

Dear Parishioners:

Although the official announcement (see below) of my being appointed the Vicar General of the

Archdiocese will not occur until later this week, it is important to the Archbishop and to me that you

are made aware of this development prior to the public announcement. I was not anticipating this

appointment, but I am honored and pleased to serve the Archbishop and the Archdiocese in this

role. Please pray for me so that I will be able to serve as Vicar General in excellent ways. It is my goal

to continue to serve as your pastor with as little change as possible. I was relieved when the

Archbishop planned for me to continue as your pastor in the “Heartland of Kentucky.” In fact, I hope

that you will not notice a difference in my care for you pastorally, spiritually and temporally!

I also want to take this opportunity on behalf of Father Casey and the staffs of our parish and school to thank you for all the

Christmas gifts and kind words that you gave to us. And especially for the Christmas Purse – an outpouring of affection

that never ceases to make me feel humbled if not unworthy. God bless you … one and all!

Father Martin

For Immediate Release/Archdiocese of Louisville

January 18, 2018

(Louisville, Kentucky) Archbishop Joseph E. Kurtz, D.D. has appointed Reverend Martin Allen Linebach as Vicar General

for the Archdiocese of Louisville, effective February 1, 2018. Father Linebach succeeds the Very Reverend J. Mark Spalding

who has served as Vicar General since 2011 and who is being ordained and installed as the twelfth Bishop of Nashville on

February 2, 2018. While serving as Vicar General, Father Linebach will generously continue as pastor of Saint James Parish

in Elizabethtown, Kentucky.

In making this appointment, Archbishop Kurtz said: “The Archdiocese has been well-served by three Vicar Generals since I

became Archbishop of Louisville in 2007: Fathers B.J. Breen, Charles C. Thompson (now Archbishop of Indianapolis), and

J. Mark Spalding. I am deeply grateful to all of them and extend special thanks to Bishop-elect Mark Spalding as he

prepares for his new role as Bishop of Nashville. I look forward to working with Father Martin, who has great

qualifications to serve in this role. He has benefitted from a variety of pastoral experiences, pursued advanced education in

management and administration as well as liturgical studies and demonstrates a deep love of Christ and His Church.”

A Vicar General serves as a diocesan bishop’s principal deputy, able to administer a diocese in the bishop’s name in the

event of an absence or illness of the ordinary. A Vicar General assists the bishop in many roles including conferral of the

sacrament of Confirmation, representing the bishop at ceremonial functions and serving as a principal advisor on the

Priests’ Council and the College of Consultors, as well as other boards and councils at the bishop’s request. A Vicar General

must be a priest in good standing of at least 30 years of age with advanced training in theology and canon law. He must

keep the bishop informed of important matters affecting the local Church, and he must endeavor to identify with the will

and intention of the diocesan bishop in all areas.

Whoever does not take up his own cross and follow Me cannot be My disciple. -Lk 14:27 REFLECTION. To stand up for what is right means to stand against what is wrong, and that means those who love what is wrong will oppose us, just as they oppose Christ. Taking up the cross means we continue standing for the right even when that opposition comes. PRAYER. Lord, thank you for the grace of being pro-life and of standing strong when others ridicule or oppose me. May your peace fill my soul, and may I become more like Your crucified and risen Son. Pro-Life Reflections for Every Day Speak up for those who cannot speak for themselves, for the rights of all who are destitute. Speak up and judge fairly; defend the rights of the poor and needy. Proverbs 31:8-9 The total number of women going into the Louisville abortion mill EMW, in October and November 2017 were 449. The total number of abortions, at that site for 2017 were 3,083. +VOCATION VIEW+

The Lord will come when we least expect him. Is he

knocking now, asking us to serve as a priest or

religious? (Luke 12:49-53)

Third Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: Jonah 3:1-5, 10

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 7:29-31

Gospel: Mark 1:14-20

Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

First Reading: 1 Samuel 3:3b-10, 19

Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 6:13c-15a, 17-20

Gospel: John 1:35-42

Samuel does not recognize God’s voice, but he is

alert and obedient, listening and ready for action.

We hear that he ran when called, and another time

he rose. Eli gives Samuel the correct response:

Speak, Lord, for your servant is listening. We live

in a world of noise and distraction. Are we ready to

answer? Can we even hear?

“When Samuel went to sleep in his place, the LORD

came and stood there, calling out as before: Samuel,

Samuel! Samuel answered, “Speak, for your servant

is listening.”” 1 Samuel 3:9-10

Today we hear Samuel respond eagerly, "Here I am" each

time the Lord calls him. A steward must be listening for

the call of God in one’s life and be ready to respond like

Samuel "Speak, for your servant is listening.”
