overview

Saint Ignatius is a remarkable institution of learning that balances a rigorous academic curriculum with exceptional athletic programming and meaningful character and spirituality development. From its founding, academic excellence was – and remains – a primary focus of life at Saint Ignatius. That focus has expanded so that, today, a challenging curriculum, master teachers, and an emphasis on clear thinking and communication skills are all hallmarks of a Saint Ignatius education.

As important as academics are, the school’s spiritual program is an essential component that sets Saint Ignatius apart from any other school in Northeast Ohio. While respecting all faith traditions, Saint Ignatius is a Catholic high school rooted in Jesuit spirituality. A four-year Theology program, annual spiritual retreats, frequent liturgies, international mission trips, and opportunities for service to those in need are mainstays. A Saint Ignatius education prepares students to become concerned and socially responsible members of their communities. Part of the Saint Ignatius student experience includes the promotion of faith in the service of justice.

Saint Ignatius seeks a new Principal who is committed to helping young men become individuals with integrity and discipline who will become active participants in a multitude of contexts and environments. Strong candidates will manifest professional and personal connections to the core values of the Jesuit faith, and have a particularly strong relationship with serving others. Additionally, strong candidates will be ready to strengthen Saint Ignatius’ ties to Northeast Ohio, and to sustain and enhance the school’s recent community-oriented initiatives.

ScHool HiStory

Saint Ignatius High School grew from an idea formed by Bishop Richard Gilmour and Fr. Michael Zoeller, S.J. They were hoping for a Jesuit school for boys to be located in the heart of Cleveland, Ohio. In January 1886, the Jesuit Superior of Buffalo, New York, Fr. Henry Behren, S.J., hastened to Cleveland and promised the bishop that the Jesuits would open their school on West 30th Street that same year. Saint Ignatius High School was officially founded on September 6, 1886. At that time, Saint Ignatius was the 20th secondary school sponsored by the Jesuits in the United States.

Saint Ignatius High School has remained a pillar of the greater Cleveland community by being open to a changing world – acknowledging its problems as well as its opportunities – yet faithful to its academic traditions, the gospel message upon which it was established, and its motto: “Men for Others,” after the Man-for-Others, Jesus Christ.

Saint Ignatius High School is a Jesuit college-preparatory school. The school enrolls approximately 1,500 young men who hail from nearly 100 cities in a nine-county region. Located in close proximity to downtown Cleveland in the vibrant and energetic Ohio City neighborhood, the school occupies 23 acres and includes 19 buildings and three athletic fields. Nearly 100% of Saint Ignatius students go on to four-year college programs at universities across the U.S. and beyond. The U.S. Department of Education has designated Saint Ignatius a Blue Ribbon school. Thanks to generous alumni and benefactors, nearly half of Saint Ignatius students receive some form of tuition assistance.

Academically, Saint Ignatius is a regional and state leader in National Merit finalists and Advanced Placement scholars. The Class of 2019 qualified 14 students as National Merit Semifinalists, four students as National Hispanic Recognition Program Scholars, and an additional 15 students as Commended Students. Saint Ignatius also had 246 students receive Advanced Placement scholar honors for 2019.

A culture of faith, service and justice exists at Saint Ignatius, setting it apart from others in the region. Saint Ignatius students volunteer to help people on the margins, travel on mission trips and march for justice. Through the ministries of the Christian Action Team, Sophomore Service, retreats and social justice programs, the Jesuit motto of A.M.D.G. (for the greater Glory of God) comes to life. Students perform, on average, more than 15,000 hours of non-required service annually.

• The Welsh Academy is a new but important component of Saint Ignatius. The academy is a school for boys, grades 6 through 8, and offers a curriculum based in Jesuit ideals and Catholic Theology. Students primarily live in Cleveland or its inner-ring suburbs, and come from either public or charter schools. Located on campus and fully a part of Saint Ignatius High School, The Welsh Academy operates with its own faculty and staff and is led by its own Principal.

• Saint Ignatius is focused on the importance of Cultural Transformation. The Principal will assist in developing the school as a pinnacle of diversity, equity, and inclusion with a focus on the future and ways to best adapt Saint Ignatius to a changing world.

• Vision ’30 is the name for the strategic plan to take Saint Ignatius through the next 10 years. Internally led, and guided by faculty, staff, and members of the Saint Ignatius community, working groups are firmly in place. The Principal will play a predominant role in seeing the school into the next decade.

academicS

A Saint Ignatius education is driven by the essential question: “What does God want from me?” The classes and extracurricular opportunities across the curriculum help students reflect on this question and hone the tools and skills they need to be active participants in the world beyond the Saint Ignatius campus.

EnglishA Jesuit education explores and celebrates the Jesuit ideal of eloquentia perfecta, speaking and writing artfully and fluently. The English program is therefore designed to combine critical thinking and disciplined studies with imagination and reflection. Saint Ignatius graduates are not only proficient readers and writers but individuals who understand and appreciate the context, theme, and style of literature. The English curriculum is just one example of many that shows how Saint Ignatius is dedicated to forming life-long learners.

HistoryOf course, the study of history and the social sciences involves far more than just memorizing dates and facts. Saint Ignatius students are challenged to engage the lessons of the past and apply their knowledge to contemporary issues. The cornerstone of the Saint Ignatius History Department is a

rich and challenging curriculum that stresses critical thinking, research skills, and the communication of ideas through both traditional writing assessments and digital media. In addition to a standard college preparatory track, students also have the opportunity to earn Advanced Placement in history and social science courses in each of their four years.

MathematicsIn the Saint Ignatius Mathematics Department, students develop the critical thinking skills essential not only for questions they will find on a geometry exam, SAT, or AP test, but also to analyze complex situations in financial markets, a chemistry lab, or a moral dilemma. Math applies to all avenues of a young man’s future not because he will need to compute sums and products, but because he will need to organize, process, conclude, and evaluate countless times. Further, the faculty believes that mathematics is the language with which students can better understand the world around them, and in turn, better understand God’s Creation. As a mathematics department in a Jesuit high school, there is a strong emphasis on cura personalis, or care of each individual, by both challenging and tutoring each student based on his unique needs. LanguagesThe study of the culture of other peoples provides the opportunity to see the world through different eyes, thus making students open to growth and loving in their understanding of others and of new situations. Furthermore, knowledge of and appreciation for other cultures leads students toward a commitment to seek justice for all of God’s people. Saint Ignatius offers coursework in the following languages: Chinese, Latin, Spanish, French, and Greek.

ScienceThe Science Department combines scientific studies with Ignatian values to ensure every student has the opportunity to know, love, and serve Jesus Christ. The science curriculum is a thorough

and comprehensive course of study that enables students to compete and excel in an increasingly technological world. The Department strives to help each student become a scientifically inquisitive, life-long learner who is dedicated to understanding and improving the world and who is also ethically committed to supporting a just society.

TheologyTheology is both an academic discipline and a spiritual enterprise. Through the study of Theology, students are invited to a deep, vibrant, and lifelong relationship with Jesus Christ and with His Church. The Theology Department is both contemporary and appropriate in presenting and promoting the teachings, traditions, and sacramental life of the Catholic Church. The unique element of service with a Catholic perspective is one of the greatest values offered through the Saint Ignatius Theology department. As a Jesuit school, Saint Ignatius alerts students to heed the cries of the poor, the helpless, and the oppressed; prepares students to be respectful of others and of opposing views; and prepares students for subsequent leadership in building the Kingdom of God. Following the motto of the Jesuits, “To the greater glory of God,” the Theology department strives to form men of faith for the Church and the world.

College CounselingThe College Counselors at Saint Ignatius work closely with each and every student and his parents/guardians throughout the college admission process, beginning in the first semester of junior year and throughout senior year. Counselors assist with college research, applications, essays, major and career exploration, as well as financial aid and scholarships. Just as every young man is an individual, the process is tailored to each student to help him decide where he will be academically challenged, comfortable, and successful, but most importantly, what God is calling him to do.

The arts are integral to any student’s academic and personal development. The Fine Arts Department seeks to cultivate that development through aesthetic experiences; all students are encouraged to pursue their artistic interests. Coursework in the arts is experiential and relies on an inductive and creative approach to learning through which the student is able to exhibit personal expression. As a result, he learns something valuable about himself and is encouraged to communicate that to others. Course offerings range from graphic design to music theory.

Saint Ignatius has a rich, meaningful tradition of developing student-athletes into men of faith and character. With a reputation for cohesive teams and good sportsmanship, The Wildcats field 16 varsity teams, plus intramurals and student sports media groups. Student-athletes learn lessons on and off the field from coaches, chaplains, and teammates. Currently, Saint Ignatius offers varsity level opportunities in baseball, basketball, bowling, crew, cross country, football, golf, hockey, lacrosse, rugby, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis, track and field, volleyball, and wrestling.

Student life

Saint Ignatius students are meant to feel and understand that they are a part of something greater than just themselves; this is the Jesuit way. The culture at the school reinforces this concept via myriad practices. For example, Counselors are available to students and parents to discuss academic tracks, provide social and emotional support, assist with career planning, implement standardized testing, and offer study skills training and other academic support. The Counseling Department also oversees Family Conferences, which take place prior to freshman and junior years. These meetings serve as a vital checkpoint with the people most invested in a student’s progress at Saint Ignatius: the student and his parents.

The Cura Personalis Program assists students who have mild learning differences. (A Latin term meaning “care for the [individual] person,” cura personalis is another hallmark of Jesuit education.) Some students may need tutoring, structured study time, assistance provided by the Walton Center for Learning, and possible extended time for test taking. Each teacher establishes a personal relationship with students, listens to them in the process of teaching, and draws them toward personal initiative and responsibility for learning.

The Christian Action Team manages the service initiatives on campus. Students of all four years are welcome to participate in the roughly 20 programs that serve a wide range of people, from the homeless to the deceased to neighborhood children. In order to facilitate a deeper connection to Jesuit principles, all Saint Ignatius students are required to complete Sophomore Service as part of the Theology graduation requirement. The experience, pioneered by Saint Ignatius High School, teaches students to develop empathy and concern for people in need and on the margins of society. Upon completion, students are understanding of the lives of the poor and the oppressed; they are

also prepared to help. Students completing Sophomore Service during the academic year will take one semester of Sophomore Service at a local agency and the other semester they take a class on morality.

In the spirit of finding and embracing different ways to serve, two opportunities are available for rising sophomores to complete their service requirement in the summer. Both require students to commit fully to a month-long summer camp experience. The Summer Enrichment Program asks students to serve as counselors to a group of rising eighth graders for a camp that will prepare them for life at Saint Ignatius. The Arrupe Summer Program lets students serve as mentors and friends to neighborhood children during an academic and recreational summer camp.

The Arrupe Neighborhood Partnership at Saint Ignatius High School is dedicated to the formation of students and the Saint Ignatius community as a whole by providing an opportunity to work and learn with neighboring residents, schools, churches and agencies in the areas of education, mentorship, recreation, and good will. Arrupe offers a variety of after-school programs and events as well as one of the city’s largest summer camps.

Cleveland, located on the southern shore of Lake Erie, has a population of just under 400,000. Cleveland’s economy today relies on diversified sectors such as manufacturing, financial services, healthcare, and biomedicals. While Cleveland may not have been considered a “destination” city a few decades ago, today it is a rising star full of activity to suit any disposition. From rock’n’roll music to National Park access to distinctive cuisine, Cleveland has something for everyone.

One of Cleveland’s best-known landmarks is the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Visitors can expect to see one of the most impressive collections of memorabilia ever assembled—from John Lennon’s guitar to hip-hop pioneer Jam Master Jay’s gold chains. The Rock Hall also showcases a number of temporary, traveling installations throughout the year. Recent exhibits included a history of women in rock, “Girls to the Front,” and a Paul Simon retrospective.

For the younger crowd, the Children’s Museum of Cleveland is a place of magic and wonder and epic destination for anyone young or young at heart. The Cleveland Museum of Art is another museum that ought to be on any tourist’s radar, consistently ranking as one of the best comprehensive art museums in the United States and one of the most visited in the world. At the Cleveland Museum of Natural History, visitors see rotating temporary exhibits all year long and a permanent collection that includes a full-sized replica of a T-Rex.

Cleveland is nothing if not a sports hub. Every summer, the Indians’ Progressive Field and its surrounding area turns into the seat of Downtown Cleveland. And for good reason: in the past few years, the baseball team has enjoyed a historical World Series, won several Central Division championships, and just hosted its sixth All-Star Game in 2019. Taking in a Cleveland Cavaliers game at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse is an absolute must for anyone visiting the city during the NBA season. Often overlooked, the Cleveland Monsters, a minor-league hockey has a long and storied history. In 2016, the Monsters won the AHL’s Calder Cup, marking the first time a Cleveland team had hoisted its league’s championship trophy since 1964. For those who love football, Cleveland has you covered with their beloved Browns and the Pro Football Hall of Fame about an hour south of Cleveland, in Canton, Ohio.

Surrounding the urban center of Downtown Cleveland, locals and visitors can enjoy an outdoor playground called The Cleveland Metroparks with winding rivers, a vast (Great) lake, plenty of trails,

outdoor adventuring, beaches, and parks. In fact, the Cleveland Metroparks is comprised of 18 separate parks in Northeast Ohio that make up what is known, locally, as “The Emerald Necklace.” Still want more? Nestled between Cleveland and Akron sits a massive stretch of additional public greenspace called the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which covers 33,000 acres of woods, water and wildlife, and is free to the public.

All that activity is bound to work up an appetite, and Cleveland’s burgeoning foodie scene includes several chefs who are known as regional celebrities, locally owned cafes, breweries, and fine dining.

oPPortunitieS and cHallengeS

This is an outstanding and rare opportunity at one of the finest and most prominent Catholic schools in the country. Saint Ignatius is a premier institution in every respect, and its academic, Fine Arts, extracurricular, and athletic programs are exceptional. Academically, the school is a regional and state leader in National Merit Finalists and Advanced Placement Scholars. The school is guided by the Jesuit tradition of “Men for Others,” and its Graduate at Graduation vision challenges students to emerge from the school as “Open to Growth, Intellectually Competent, Religious, Loving, and Committed to peace and justice.” A distinctive commitment to service is a 130-year deeply rooted tradition and a cherished part of the school’s culture. Current students and alumni from across the decades speak about it with equal passion.

This is a classic “take it to the next level opportunity” for the right leader. The school enjoys an enviable market presence and history in the greater Cleveland community, but there is a desire to seize the momentum and build on this solid institutional foundation. In the words of one trustee,

“The school is at an inflection point.” Saint Ignatius is currently engaged in a school-wide strategic planning process with a goal of outlining a forward-leaning vibrant path for the school over the next decade. The curriculum and schedule are currently under review by the faculty and administration. The school seeks a Principal who will build empowering engagement with both students and faculty, and who has had successful prior experience in implementing desired change through a positive, thoughtful, and collaborative process—blending the best of tradition with innovative and creative approaches to ensure that Saint Ignatius remains at the very forefront of Catholic education for the 21st century.

deSired QualitieS and QualificationS

As with all Jesuit secondary schools, Saint Ignatius operates in the President/Principal Leadership Model. In this powerful leadership structure, the Principal reports to the President and is responsible for day to day academic operations and the overall quality of the student experience. Moreover, the Principal plays a vital part in setting the tone, fulfilling the mission, holding people accountable, and partnering with the President to achieve the critical goals and objectives of the school. In this regard, the President could be considered the “Institution Builder” and the Principal the “Community Builder.” Together the President and Principal represent a formidable and synergistic leadership team.

The next Principal should be a dynamic practicing Catholic as well as a strong “Servant Leader”—collaborative and collegial yet at the same time, persistent and determined. The school is deeply committed to Ignatian spirituality and emphasis on Cura Personalis, or care for the whole person. The Principal must embody and exemplify the mission and demonstrate its power and purpose in daily leadership practice. Saint Ignatius is a high performing institution with a caring heart. Distinguished

academic credentials will be important in the new Principal, but so will a visible, approachable, and energizing leadership style, along with a penchant for innovation and an entrepreneurial spirit. The Principal will play a key role in supporting and helping to actualize the themes and aspirations of Vision ’30, the new Strategic Plan.

Successful previous experience in Catholic secondary leadership is desired, as is the ability to provide compelling academic direction in research-based best practices for teaching and learning excellence. The Principal should be a clear and inspiring communicator and relationship-builder who, while valuing Saint Ignatius’ distinguished traditions, can also work collaboratively with the school community to envision new, mission-driven possibilities for the further growth and development of this extraordinary and celebrated school in the years ahead.
