It was April 1978 when I first arrived in Keene from Boston. The Bishop had assigned me to the community of St. George to conduct Holy Week services. I had no idea that I would continue for any length of time. Because Presvytera Faye needed the only car we had, I had come by Greyhound bus. Chris Tasoulas, then parish council president, greeted me at the bus station and acted as chauffeur for my priestly calls. Chris and Anna hosted me warmly at their home throughout the week. That was the beginning of my ministry at the community of St. George. By God’s grace, the week turned into months and the months into years and the years into decades!
As I look back on all these years of my priesthood at St. George’s, I am filled with profound thanksgiving to God and to all of you, parishioners and dear friends. It would take hours to mention specifics and individual persons. A profound thanks to those who served next to me as council presidents and officers, to all who served as council members, as teachers, youth workers, prosforo bakers, altar boys, hospitality givers, readers and choir members, visitors of the sick, and building and ground keepers and all of you, the wonderful faithful of St. George Church. I thank you from my heart, all of you the wonderful faithful, for your presence and support of the mission of St. George Church. And thank you for welcoming me and my family--for making us part of the parish family. Because of your love and kindness, St. George parish has been a home for us through these many years. Your faithfulness to God and your love for the Church have been sources of strength and inspiration to me. We have prayed and worked together. We have eaten and celebrated together. We have shared joys and sorrows. Many of you opened your homes to us in warm hospitality. For all these things I am deeply thankful to you and first of all thankful to “God from whom are all things and for whom we exist, and to the one Lord Jesus, through whom are all things and through whom we exist” (1 Corinthians 8:6).
Unable to be with you during the week, the Divine Liturgy on Sunday mornings has been the heart and soul of our community. This of course is most appropriate because the Divine Liturgy is the main sacrament of the Church, a sacrament of God’s kingdom for our lives. The Divine Liturgy is called Eucharist (“Thanksgiving”) because Jesus, having gathered His disciples at the Last Supper, gave thanks to God and said: “Take eat, this is my Body . . . Drink of [this cup] all of you, for this is my Blood of the new covenant, for the forgiveness of sins.” So we, too, have gathered around the table of the Lord, again and again, and have partaken of Holy Communion, being united with Christ and with each other. There is nothing more powerful than the bond of love between Christians who love the Lord and love one another. St. John the Evangelist wrote: “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers and sisters” (1 John 3:14).
It is in this spirit of thankfulness for God’s blessings that we also seek forgiveness from each other. No one is without weaknesses. Our shortcomings keep us tied to the earth. Sin runs through the heart of every human being. Sometimes we offend and hurt each other without ever realizing it. Before Holy Communion we priests say to the congregation: “My brothers and sisters, forgive me, an unworthy priest.” It is in this spirit that I ask for your prayers and your forgiveness as well for my shortcomings. I offer forgiveness to all and humbly ask to receive it from all. The letter of James says: “Confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, that you may be healed” (James 5:16). Through love and forgiveness we find comfort, freedom of the spirit, the joy of the Lord, and not least we prepare ourselves for the life of eternity with God.

I have a special word for the children. Children, all of you, have been my joy. With your bright faces, your shining faith, your love, you have been a precious gift to me and to all our people. Sometimes I have been sad and thoughtful. But the way you said hello to me, your smiles, your goodness, your affection, and your gentle hugs, took away my sadness right away and filled my heart with joy. I know that I am the only priest most of you have known. It is hard to say good bye. But please remember that the Church belongs to God. We go to Church to be with God, to worship God, and pray together to be a strong Church. Also, with our faith in God and our love for God, we have to be strong and prepared for important changes in life. Know that I have loved you dearly with the love of Christ, and I will keep your Christian love for me in my heart as a special, special treasure. I will pray for you and ask you to pray for me in your evening prayers and on Sunday mornings. Keene and Boston are not a million miles away from each other. May God grant that we see each other from time to time. Love Jesus. Love the Church. Be holy, honest, and good in all that you do. Dear children, God bless you always.
A final word for all of you, my sisters and brothers. In the Orthodox Church, clergy and laity are co-workers, servants, and stewards in the Church of God. In the words of St. Paul: “As servants of Christ and stewards of the mysteries of God . . . it is required . . . that [we] be found trustworthy (pistoi)--faithful” (1 Corinthians 4:1-2). At a time of national uncertainty, world crises, the erosion of faith, and the distortion of truth and justice, let us be irrevocably committed to faithfulness--faithfulness to Christ, to the Church, to the gospel of salvation, to the work God has given us in our own journey of life, and to each other. Beyond personalities and particular viewpoints, let steadfast faithfulness and Christian love that never fails be the ground of our unity; the anchor of our inspiration; the strength to meet the challenges of today and tomorrow in fulfillment of Christ’s mission in the world. Brothers and sisters in the Lord, “be watchful, stand firm in your faith, be courageous, be strong. Let all that you do be done in love” (1 Corinthians 16:13). Remember us and pray for us, just as we will remember you and pray for you. Be well, healthy, and hopeful in the Lord. To Him always be the praise, honor, and glory. Amen.
Fr. Ted presented “Ever Thankful for All These Years” to nearly 200 people

Ask Father Ted
QUESTION:
Does the Orthodox Church have religious Orders like the Catholic Church? Why/why not?
ANSWER:
The Catholic Church has allowed the development of various religious Orders to fulfill various personal callings of priests and monks but also to serve in various ministries of the Church. For example, the Jesuits concentrate on spreading Catholic theology and philosophy, while the Trappists concentrate on silence and prayer. The Benedictines emphasize manual work and self-subsisting monasteries, while the Carmelites are more meditative. Such Orders have their own organization and administration under canon law but under the supervision of the local bishop or directly the Pope.
That the Orthodox Church has not developed such large-scale religious Orders with their own administrations may be due to diverse reasons. One reason is that the Orthodox Church consists of a family of Orthodox Churches, the Greek, Serbian, Bulgarian, Russian, Syrian, etc., each with its own administration, which would make universal Orders functioning within the many Orthodox Churches more difficult to arrange and to maintain. Another reason is that Orthodox theology, spirituality, and monasticism are strongly “otherworldly” concentrating on the invisible of the glorified saints, the kingdom of God, and the salvation of souls. Such ministries as teaching, philanthropy, and mission are left to the Church and its lay and clergy members who live in the world.
And yet, within Orthodox monasticism, three forms of monastic life have indeed developed and are considered traditional without constituting “Orders” as in the Roman Catholic case. One is the hermetic life in which individual monks live and pray largely alone (but can receive visitors by their own choice). Another is community monasticism (koinovion) and worship in a well-ordered monastery led by an abbot which is the general practice. And still another mediates between the two forms (the hermetic and the corporate) in which monks live and pray alone but on Sundays and Feastdays they gather together for worship and meals. It should be added that all Orthodox monks, along with prayer and worship, are usually assigned manual work to maintain themselves and the monasteries as much as possible, together with offerings from the faithful.
In modern times some interesting new things have occurred, for example, Orthodox monks have become missionaries and Orthodox celibate priests (a type of monks) who have become either missionaries or professors of theology--which may be seen as breaking new ground.

Fall is upon us and soon it will be winter! We have started planning
next year’s Stewardship program and need to remind you that we
only have a couple of months left to get those pledges in!
If you have not pledged, please consider a pledge today. Thanks to
all of you who have pledged faithfully this year.
Our theme this past year has been Abide in Me from chapter 15 of
the Gospel of John. At the last supper, as we read in Chapter 15 of
the Gospel of John, Jesus instructed His disciples, “I Am the Vine;
you are the branches.” He was telling us that the purpose of our
abiding in Him is that we may bear fruit for God in the world. “By this
My Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit…” Just as the vine
bears fruit only through its branches, so Jesus has chosen to work in
the world through us. We are the branches through which the True
Vine must bear fruit. We bear fruit when we serve and support God
and His Church. If you haven’t already pledged, please consider
pledging a gift before the end of the year.
Thank You, Kathy Nikiforakis, Stewardship Chairperson

Fayrah StylianopoulosFather Ted’s Retirement Celebration – Saturday, October 13, 2012
Love, respect, admiration, gratitude… those are just some of the feelings that filled Hellenic Hall on Saturday, October 13th when almost 200 people gathered to celebrate Fr. Ted and Presvytera Faye’s 34-year tenure at St. George Greek Orthodox Church.
Current and previous parishioners, friends, and family, including the four adult Stylianopoulos children, spouses, and grandchildren, enjoyed an evening of paying tribute to our beloved priest and his gracious wife.
The first speaker was Irene Cheek, who welcomed everyone, followed by testimonials by long-time parishioners, Panos Pitsas, Peter Espiefs, Mary Booras, and parish council president Maria Bradshaw (Maria’s words are found on page 7 of this bulletin).
Fr. Ted graced us with warm words, “Ever Thankful for all These Years”, reprinted on pages 2 and 3 of this bulletin.
There was an abundance of delicious food, celebration, music, and Greek dancing.
Thank you to all who attended; to those who could not attend but supported the event and sent your good wishes; to Vasiliki Moore and Irene Cheek for coordinating the event; to Mike and Carolyn Blastos and The Pub for your superb catering at an affordable price; to Kevin Warren for the photography; and to all of you who volunteered or helped in some way. Collectively, you created a magical and memorable evening.
