ST. JOSEPH IS OPEN

We are celebrating, with limited attendees, a daily mass on Monday to Friday mornings at 8:30 AM at St. Joseph Church. We will be offering two Sunday masses with limited attendees at 8:00 AM and 11:00 AM at St. Joseph Church. “Reservations” will be required for the Sunday masses. A reservation may only be obtained by calling the parish office (302-378-5800) the Monday through Thursday prior to the next Sunday mass between 2:00 PM and 3:00 PM only. You may request a reservation for a single person or for a “family unit” of multiple persons living together in a common residence. Reservations are not required for week day masses. We have posted on line a short you tube video which explains the new procedures and restrictions for attending reopening masses at St. Joseph Church. We ask that you go to our website and hit the “click on” button for our live streamed masses which will bring you to our YouTube site; click on “videos”. There you will find the video titled: “Msgr. David Kelley: Reopening Procedures for Mass.” Please watch the video from beginning to end. Bishop Malooly’s suspension of the obligation to attend Sunday mass is still in effect for all persons no matter their age. We will be continuing to live stream both our daily masses and Saturday evening mass as we have been since Holy Week. The Bishop particularly would ask those over 6o years old to carefully consider whether they should be coming back to church, especially those with underlying conditions. Several regulations that anyone planning to come to St. Joseph’s for mass at this time needs to consider are:

All persons over two years must wear a mask from when they enter the church until they exit the church. All persons regardless of age must remain in their assigned seat during the mass; if a person leaves their seat during mass they will be directed to leave the building. The restrooms will be unavailable before, during, and after every mass due to difficulties meeting the sanitizing and social distancing requirements. The gathering space will be unavailable to all persons during the mass. You should arrive for mass 30 to 45 minutes before the scheduled starting time of mass.

All are expected to abide by the above regulations for the health and safety of others in attendance. As we become more accustomed to our new procedures, we hope to be able to increase the number of persons we will be able to accommodate in the church for each of the Sunday masses. We here at St. Joseph’s are looking forward to having you with us in person as you are wanting to “come home” to your church!

Take care and stay healthy, Msgr. David Kelley

The Word in Our Lives Readings for July 12, 2020

15th Sunday of Ordinary Time

First Reading: Is 55:10-11 Thus says the LORD: Just as from the heavens the rain and snow come down and do not return there till they have watered the earth, making it fertile and fruitful, giving seed to the one who sows and bread to the one who eats, so shall my word be that goes forth from my mouth; my word shall not return to me void, but shall do my will, achieving the end for which I sent it. Responsorial Psalm: Psalm 65:10, 11, 12-13, 14 Second Reading: Romans 8:18-23 Brothers and sisters: I consider that the sufferings of this present time are as nothing compared with the glory to be revealed for us. For creation awaits with eager expectation the revelation of the children of God; for creation was made subject to futility, not of its own accord but because of the one who subjected it, in hope that creation itself would be set free from slavery to corruption and share in the glorious freedom of the children of God. We know that all creation is groaning in labor pains even until now; and not only that, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, we also groan within ourselves as we wait for adoption, the redemption of our bodies. Gospel: Matthew 13:1-23 or 13:1-9 On that day, Jesus went out of the house and sat down by the sea. Such large crowds gathered around him that he got into a boat and sat down, and the whole crowd stood along the shore. And he spoke to them at length in parables, saying: “A sower went out to sow. And as he sowed, some seed fell on the path, and birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky ground, where it had little soil. It sprang up at once because the soil was not deep, and when the sun rose it was scorched, and it withered for lack of roots. Some seed fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked it. But some seed fell on rich soil, and produced fruit, a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold. Whoever has ears ought to hear.” The disciples approached him and said, “Why do you speak to them in parables?” He said to them in reply, “Because knowledge of the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven has been granted to you, but to them it has not been granted. To anyone who has, more will be given and he will grow rich; from anyone who has not, even what he has will be taken away. This is why I speak to them in parables, because they look but do not see and hear but do not listen or understand. Isaiah’s prophecy is fulfilled in them, which says: You shall indeed hear but not understand, you shall indeed look but never see. Gross is the heart of this people, they will hardly hear with their ears, they have closed their eyes, lest they see with their eyes and hear with their ears and understand with their hearts and be converted, and I heal them. “But blessed are your eyes, because they see, and your ears, because they hear. Amen, I say to you, many prophets and righteous people longed to see what you see but did not see it, and to hear what you hear but did not hear it. “Hear then the parable of the sower. The seed sown on the path is the one who hears the word of the kingdom without understanding it, and the evil one comes and steals away what was sown in his heart. The seed sown on rocky ground is the one who hears the word and receives it at once with joy. But he has no root and lasts only for a time. When some tribulation or persecution comes because of the word, he immediately falls away. The seed sown among thorns is the one who hears the word, but then worldly anxiety and the lure of riches choke the word and it bears no fruit. But the seed sown on rich soil is the one who hears the word and understands it, who indeed bears fruit and yields a hundred or sixty or thirtyfold.”

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENT PREPARATION NEWS!

Registration forms for Religious Education and the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation will be available on the parish website, www.stjosephmiddletown.com on Monday, March 2nd. Religious Education registrations are accepted from registered parishioners on a first-come, first-served basis until August 31, 2020. No registrations will be accepted after August 31, 2020, except from families that are relocating to our parish, moving from their existing religious education program to our program. In order to ensure both the accuracy of our records and the safety of our students, we will be unable to process any registration that does not include all required information, payment, and/or documentation. Incomplete registrations will be returned. If your child has completed grade one, either in our Religious Education program or in Catholic school, and is enrolling in grade two, you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation program for Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. The Confirmation preparation program also has a separate registration form, schedule and fee. In conjunction with the Diocese, we also offer a Special Needs Religious Education program. Contact the Religious Education Office at 302.378.5800, ext. 107 for further information. St. Joseph Parish has one of the largest Religious Education programs in our diocese. We are always in need of volunteers and gratefully welcome those that are willing to share their time, talent and faith. We look forward to working with you and your family.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS Although the coronavirus has been hard on everybody, it is especially difficult for those who live alone. Cherish the companionship you share. Who do you know who doesn't have someone at home to talk with? Give them a call.

PARENTING POINTERS Usually the parent is the teacher of the child. But today ponder what you can learn from your child. (playfulness, trust, technology...)

Reopening St. Joseph church is being done cautiously. Please check guidance on St. Joseph home web page for current guidance and new information. Attend if you are willing and able.

Be ready to say, “Yes” if asked to help and you are able.

Continue Rosaries and appropriate Novenas to bring about a return to normal and peace in our land.

Thanks to all who have attended our virtual business meetings! Look for announcements.

Want to join our Council? Contact any Brother Knight or Marty Brett at [email protected].

TRUE PRESENCE PRESENTATION Adult Faith Formation will give a 3 part series on THE TRUE PRESENCE in the Eucharist. Postponed for now, and will resume when activities resume to normal.

DID YOU KNOW... Charles Carroll was the only Roman Catholic to sign the Declaration of Independence? Born in Annapolis, Maryland in 1737, he and his cousin, John, attended and studied secretly at the Jesuit Bohemia Academy in 1747. This academy, run by Jesuits, lasted ten years and was located on the site which we now know as St. Francis Xavier Church. In 1749 the cousins were sent to Europe to finish their education. Upon return, Charles became steeped in Revolutionary politics, and famously called himself, “First Citizen.” He was elected delegate from Maryland to attend the Second Continental Congress and there he signed the Declaration. His cousin, John Carroll, defended the Catholic faith in the new United States. He was appointed by Pope Pius VI in 1784 as “Superior of the Missions” in the thirteen United States. Later Pope Pius VI agreed to let Maryland priests elect John as the first Bishop of America and then approved the selection. In 1806 John oversaw the construction of the first cathedral in America, today called The Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Remember these men this July Fourth weekend.
