Open Wide Our Hearts Study GuideIntroductionIn November 2018, the United States Conference ofCatholic Bishops approved a new pastoral letteragainst racism, Open Wide Our Hearts: The EnduringCall to Love. In the letter, the bishops invite all peopleof faith to conversion. We are called to open ourminds and hearts to Christ’s love for all people and tothe experiences of those who have been harmed bythe evil of racism.

The letter and this accompanying study guideare for everyone. The process of praying through, reflecting upon, and acting upon the message of thepastoral letter is hard work, but it is work from whichall will benefit. As the bishops write, “Each of usshould adopt the words of Pope Francis as our own:let no one ‘think this invitation is not meant for him orher.’” We are all in need of “a genuine conversion ofheart” and we must all actively participate inreforming those institutions and structures that stillperpetuate racial inequality and harm our sisters andbrothers. The bishops write, “Finally, too often racismcomes in the form of the sin of omission, whenindividuals, communities, and even churches remainsilent and fail to act against racial injustice when it isencountered."

All who seek to open wide their hearts throughprayerful engagement with this letter are invited topray, listen, study, reflect, and respond. This studyguide and the resources within are designed tocomplement the pastoral letter and will aid ingrasping the spirit and intent of the letter.

PrayPrayer is the foundation for a strong faith life. Wemust begin with listening through prayer if we are tohear how God is truly calling us to respond in love. Our lives of prayer help us to know Jesus more deeplyand hear more clearly how he calls us. Prayer canopen our hearts to conversion, even in unexpectedplaces. The pastoral letter invites readers intoconversion, and we must prepare our hearts forconversion through prayer. Several resources, including this scripture reflection and thisexamination of conscience are available atusccb.org/racism and can be utilized prior to readingthe letter.

ListenMany members of the body of Christ have sufferedthe pain of racism. In Open Wide Our Hearts, thebishops invite us to create opportunities to see Christin our neighbors and to listen to their stories andexperiences. As you prepare to read and reflect onthe pastoral letter, it is critical to find opportunities tohear the real-life experiences of others. Theseexperiences can make the message of the pastoralletter tangible and help prepare you to receive it. Ifyou are studying the pastoral letter as an individual orfamily, think about how you can expand yourawareness. If you have friends who are from culturalbackgrounds different than your own, ask them toshare their experiences with you. If you live, work, worship, or spend your free time in places wheremost people look like you, be intentional aboutexpanding your circle and creating opportunities toform relationships with others. Become familiar withmedia sources frequented by other cultures. Visitcultural institutions such as museumscommemorating the experiences of people ofcultures different than your own. Invite people fromdifferent cultural backgrounds to church gatherings, bible studies, and social events and focus on listeningand learning from them.

Study and ReflectThe study guide is divided into several sections thatcorrespond with the sections of the pastoral letter.Use the prompts to know where to start, whatbackground information to explore, and how toreflect, as individual or with a group, on what you arelearning. For those studying the pastoral letter ingroups, this guide to dialogue on difficult issues maybe helpful.

RespondIn Open Wide Our Hearts, the bishops call for “concreteaction” by individuals, families, parishes, schools, andorganizations to seek justice and right relationship inour communities. You can use this Process for GroupDiscernment to help identify the best ways to respondtogether. (Some of the questions in the resource canbe helpful for individuals as well.)
