FOUTH SUNDAY OF LENT

STATIONS OF THE CROSS WITH LENTEN REFLECTION Every Friday during Lent, all are invited to pray the Stations of the Cross a Biblical Re lection at 7:00 p.m. inside the Church. Invite your friends and family to these evenings of growing in the faith and building community.

CUARTO DOMINGO DE CUARESMA Today we hear one of the most beloved stories in the Gospel of Luke, Jesus’ parable of the Prodigal Son. Reconciliation is a prominent theme. Seeing the younger son returning to him, the son who left the family and squandered his inheritance, the compassionate father runs to embrace him. Jesus offers us a vision of a loving God who is merciful and forgiving when we, through our own sinfulness, leave his presence, and then through repentance, return to him. The remainder of the Lenten season offers us an opportunity to re lect on God’s compassion and our need for reconciliation. Consider celebrating the sacrament of reconciliation and experience God’s loving embrace and forgiveness.

Sacrament of Reconciliation In the Sacrament of Penance and Reconciliation we meet the Lord who wants to grant forgiveness and the grace to live a renewed life in him. In this sac-rament, he prepares us to receive him free from serious sin, with a lively faith, earnest hope, and sacri icial love in the Eucharist. All Catholics are required to go to confession once a year and Lent is the perfect time to go!

Let us approach the Lord with a contrite heart and con-fess our sins to be forgiven and receive His love. Confessions will be offered from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the following Tuesdays:

“Lent reminds us, therefore, that Christian life is a never-ending combat in which the “weapons” of prayer, fast-ing and penance are used. Fighting against evil, against every form of sel ishness and hate, and dying to oneself to live in God is the ascetic journey that every disciple of Jesus is called to make with humility and patience, with generosity and perseverance.” – Benedict XVI, 2006

Benedicto XVI, 2016

The Parable of the Prodigal Son A man had two sons. The younger son said to his father, “Father, give me my inheritance now.” The father agreed, giving his son the in-heritance that was due to him. Upon receiving it, the son traveled to a foreign country, where he wasted his money on sinful pleasures. Total-ly broke, he found himself in a land facing its own inancial woes because of a famine. A swineherd gave him a job taking care of the pigs. So small were his wages that he could not buy enough food to feed himself. He yearned to eat the food given to the pigs but was not al-lowed to. Hitting rock bottom, he came to his senses, realizing that his father’s workers had plenty to eat while he was starving. He decided to go home, apologize to his father and to God for his sins, declare that he was unworthy to be called his father’s son, and ask for a job on the estate. Meanwhile, the father sorely missed his young son. Each day he stood on a hill, peering into the distance, aching to see his son and hoping he would come home. Then one day he saw his son coming toward him. He ran to his son, hugged and kissed him, and praised God for his son’s return. With tears of joy and much embracing, the father smoth-ered the repentant words of his son. The father jubilantly called out to his servants to clothe his son in the best robe and to put a ring on his inger and sandals on his feet. He ordered the fattened calf to be slain and roasted for a feast. Why? “Because this son of mine was dead and has come to life again; he was lost and has been found” (Lk 15:24). The older son heard the excitement and asked what it was about. When he heard the reason, he was furious. Pouting, he refused even to enter the house. The father came out and plead-ed with him to come inside and celebrate the homecoming of his younger brother. The older son argued that his younger brother did not deserve this party. He had wasted his inher-itance. Why should he who had been the good and faithful son—and never had a party like this given in his honor—be humiliated by experiencing the festive meal, joyous music, and enthusiastic welcome for such a good-for-nothing brother? The father replied that the older son had absolute security and the utmost love and regard of his father. Everything the father owned belonged to him. “My son, be forgiving and generous of heart. Your brother was dead and is now alive. We must cele-brate. Rejoice in his return to us and this home of love.” Usually this story is named after the prodigal son who wasted his inheritance. But it could just as well be entitled “The Forgiv-ing Father,” as he has a heart of sheer generosity and spends his love lavishly on forgiving and welcoming his son back home. In scriptural terms, the son represents a sinner in need of for-giveness who is moved to repent, confess his sin, and humble himself before God. The father in the story represents God’s immense compassion, rich in mercy and ever willing to search out sinners and offer them the forgiveness that brings them home. The story encour-ages us to trust in God the Father’s love and forgiveness, which we receive in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. “Hijo mıo, ten un corazon misericordioso y genero-so. Tu hermano habıa muerto pero ahora vive. Debemos celebrar. DID YOU KNOW? Creativeproblemsolving indsnewwaystoprotect

childrenIn the Protecting God’s Children program, adults learn how to identify potential signs of abuse and how to pick up on red lag behaviors that indicate a potential preda-tor, even before abuse happens. Another tool in the arse-nal of child protection is creative problem solving, where adults learn to think outside the box when it comes to inding solutions for protecting children. One very effective creative problem-solving tool is to refocus the group’s thinking, turning it away from the perceived “problem” and productively more toward a collaborative solution. Consider the challenge of how to deal with registered sex offenders whose children attend the school or participate in reli-gious education at the parish. Rather than discuss the topic, the leader might ask participants to inish the following sentences, “Wouldn’t it be awful if…” and “Wouldn’t it be wonderful if…” Once everyone has provided responses, the group can look through the answers to ind connecting themes that may provide a previously untried solution. For more information from the VIRTUS® article “Creative Problem Solving — How Can it Help?”
