Balloon Festival 2017 - The winds were with Branchburg & Three Bridges! Many parishioners
were treated to a bird’s eye view of this year balloons. Some favorites:
Our fearless Lion King leader, Fr. Tom, was up and away … in
Italy!
The three bees were a
welcome sight. Perhaps the
Father, Son & Holy Spirit?
And all were
surrounded by beautiful, vibrant
colors of the universe!
Thanks be to God we are all blessed to live in
such beautiful surroundings!

From the Pastor
Transfiguration of the Lord
Preempts the 18th
Sunday in Ordinary Time - A
August 6, 2017
Twice a year: 40 days before Good Friday and 40 days before the
Exaltation of the Holy Cross, September 14, the Church recalls our
Lord’s Transfiguration. To prepare us for the shock and horror of the Cross, Christ appeared
in glory, outshining Moses [the Law] and Elijah [the Prophets]. Just as these two great Old Testament characters foreshadowed Christ and His saving deeds, Saints re-echo His victory over sin and death … which brings us to the Saint we
honor on August 10: the patron saint of cooks, the poor, fire, and of all things, bankers and the lazy: Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr.
Collect - Saint Lawrence, Deacon and Martyr
O God, giver of that ardor of love for you by which Saint Lawrence was
outstandingly faithful in service and glorious in martyrdom,
grant that we may love what he loved and put into practice what he taught.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ … and ever. Amen.
ARDOR OF LOVE FOR GOD. Saint Lawrence
was born around 225 and died in 258 at 33 years of age, like our Lord. He died in the same violent persecutions ordered by the Emperor Valerian, who had Pope Saint Sixtus II beheaded
on August 7, days before he had Saint Lawrence killed on August 10; these dates are still their respective feast days. This oration highlights Saint Lawrence’s ardor or his enthusiastic zeal and unswerving dedication to the Faith. For as
the next two orations highlight, Saint Lawrence let nothing distract or divert him from bearing witness to Christ and to His Church.
Prayer over the Offerings - Saint Lawrence
Receive with favor, O Lord, the offerings we joyfully make on the feast day of
Saint Lawrence and grant that they become a help to our salvation.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
“BE SHREWD AS SERPENTS AND SIMPLE AS DOVES.” While we know little historical data
about Saint Lawrence, we know the 3rd and 4th
Century Church already held him in great esteem - and that he lived by the words of our Lord: “Be shrewd as serpents and simple as doves.” [Matthew 10:16]
As one of the seven Deacons of Rome, he and
the other six Deacons personally served the Holy Father, Pope Saint Sixtus II, and oversaw the ministerial activities of the Church in Rome. Once the Pope was arrested and executed, they knew they were next … but instead of fleeing,
they courageously and valiantly fulfilled their duties … of which Saint Lawrence deserved special credit. Since he oversaw the Church’s temporal affairs, he had the sacred vessels and other holy items - which he knew would be
confiscated anyway - sold; then he gave the money to the poor.
So, when the Emperor demanded that all the Church’s treasures and riches be given to him, since, as he reminded Saint Lawrence, we must “give to Caesar what is Caesar’s,” he asked for three days to compile all the things the Emperor
requested. On the third day, after gathering a great number of blind, lame, maimed, leprous, orphaned, and widowed persons, and putting them in rows, he simply told the Emperor’s representative: “These are the treasures of the Church.” This sealed his fate, and made him the patron saint of fire, bankers and the poor.
Prayer after Communion - Saint Lawrence
Nourished by these sacred gifts, we humbly implore you, Lord,
that the homage of dutiful service, which we render on the feast of Saint Lawrence, may bring us an increase of your saving grace.
Through Christ our Lord. Amen.
“GOD LOVES A CHEERFUL GIVER.” Saint Lawrence truly heeded Saint Paul’s advice [2
Corinthians 9:7] to be a cheerful giver. Livid with anger over being deceived, the Emperor ordered Saint Lawrence to be grilled alive. But, as the legend goes, after roasting for a while, he quipped, “Turn me over; I’m done on this side.” Thus, he is the patron saint of cooks … and of
the lazy … since, as some say, he was too lazy to turn himself over. Saint Lawrence, pray for us.
In His holy Name,
Rev. Thomas J. Serafin, KHS

Peter: Cornerstone of Catholicism
Wednesdays, 9:30-11:30 am OR 7:30-9:30 pm Sept. 20 - Dec. 6, 2017
This bible study provides a glimpse into Jesus’ call
of Peter and his apostles ... and most especially how
he calls us in our lives! Each session begins with a
DVD presentation which delves deeper into the
Gospel and expands our understanding of the
events that took place. You will come to realize
how there is greater meaning to every encounter,
every word that Christ spoke - and this gives
insights into how Christ is actively involved in all
aspects of our lives as well. Following the talk there
is discussion in groups. There is also time to spend
at home reflecting further on insights from the
sessions. This is a beautiful time for your own
spiritual development as you meditate on how God
is calling you.
Materials Needed: Study guide, New American
Bible, Catechism of the Catholic Church. The study
guide can be downloaded from www.FORMED.org
or you can order one for $30 through Diane Luceri.
Please register for this program by SEPTEMBER 6.
Unlocking the Mystery of the Bible
Monday Evenings: 7:00-8:30 pm
Oct. 2 - Nov. 20, 2017
You Can Understand the Bible!
God speaks to us in so many ways, but most
especially through His Word, the Bible. In Sacred
Scripture, God comes down to our level and speaks
to us in a way that we can understand and relate
to. However, so many people don’t read the Bible -
not because they don’t want to, but because they
don’t know how to read the Bible.
Join us for this program and discover an easy way
to read the Bible. Through this program you will
come to a better understanding of God’s Word and
how it relates to your life. Furthermore, you will
come to realize just how much God loves you and
wants to be part of your life!
Materials required: study guide, New American Bible.
This program is perfect for Confirmation parents as
classes meet at the same time as Confirmation
classes! It also counts towards diocesan certification
for catechists!
You can register NOW and order the study guide
through www.evangelization.com. Contact Diane
Luceri for a direct link to our study!
Please register by September 18.
Be sure to take advantage of this wonderful online resource with access to numerous Catholic programs, books, talks and movies at no cost to you! Not signed up yet? Register at FORMED.org and enter our parish code: GK2J6P. You will set up your profile and be able to access the material at any time.

RCIA: Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
Have you or anyone you know been considering the possibility of becoming a member of the Catholic Church?
Is there someone in your life with whom you’d like to share their Catholic faith?
Have you been coming to Mass for years and feel that now is the time for you to become Catholic?
Were you baptized Catholic but never received Eucharist or Confirmation?
Have you been experiencing a desire to receive Jesus in the Eucharist?
Whatever your reasons might be for choosing to become Catholic or for completing your initiation into the Catholic Church, beneath that choice is God who is calling you to “Come and see!”
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is the way in which adults become fully active, participating members of the Catholic Church. Through this process
non-Christian adults are prepared for Baptism, Confirmation and first Eucharist, and non-Catholic Christians and Catholics who are only baptized are prepared for Confirmation and first Eucharist, which takes place at the Easter Vigil which is March 31, 2018.
Ready to find out more? Come to any Mass the weekend of Sept. 16 & 17.
There will be speakers at each Mass talking about their experience in the RCIA. Following each Mass you will have the opportunity to talk with the speaker and the RCIA team to receive more information and to have any questions answered.
Contact our RCIA Director, Diane Luceri, at 782-1475 X 1114 or [email protected], at any time to find out more info or to set up an appointment.
Come to an inquiry session - weekly sessions will begin
on Sunday, October 1 from 10:30 am-12 noon. This is a time to ask questions to find out more about the Catholic Faith. Contact Diane if you would like to attend a session.
*** Adult Catholics and high school students needing Confirmation should also contact Diane.

This Weekend - The Transfiguration of the Lord
First Reading: Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14 - Daniel depicts God as a judge with many people standing before him. He also describes a man who came to him, and was given power over all other people. This power is described as everlasting and never to be destroyed.
Second Reading: 2 Peter 1:16-19 - Peter discusses how the disciples witnessed Jesus being honored and spoken
to by God, fulfilling all the prophecies. He also reminds us that these prophecies were God’s words, delivered through a person moved by the Holy Spirit.
Gospel: Mt 17:1-9 - Jesus took three of his disciples to a high mountain, where Elijah and Moses appeared and spoke to him. Peter suggested they make three tents, one each for Jesus, Moses and Elijah. While he spoke, a voice came from a cloud saying, “This is my Son, the beloved one; listen to him.” The disciples became very afraid and fell to their knees. Jesus told them to rise and not to be afraid. As they looked up, they saw only Jesus.
As they left the mountain, Jesus warned the disciples not to mention this until he had risen from the dead. Although they did not understand, they obeyed.

Open Your Heart and Home to a Foster Child
Catholic Charities, Diocese of Metuchen is
seeking loving families to foster children of all ages, who have been abused, neglected or have had multiple out of home placements, through its Treatment Family Homes Program, contracted by New Jersey’s Department of
Children and Families. The goal for the children in this program is to leave foster care and achieve permanency through reunification with their families, adoption, or independent living.
Catholic Charities provides these resilient children with individual and family therapy,
assistance with educational and medical needs, and independent living skills to help them reach their full potential.
Applicants must have adequate space for a child and complete a home study which includes
background checks, references, interviews, and a home inspection. All Catholic Charities licensed families receive initial and ongoing specialized training, 24 hour emergency access to staff, respite services, monthly reimbursement
for the child’s expenses and support from experienced families.
For more info about the program, please visit www.ccdom.org or contact Miguelina Nunez at 866-247-HOME (4663) or [email protected].
