Ruth and the Fami ly
Ruth shows family to be at the center of God’s plan By Dr. Jeff Mirus — Sep 05, 2017 The Book of Ruth in the Old Testament is very short, only about three times the length of this little essay. It is a charming account of how Ruth, a Moabite who had married one of Naomi’s sons, accompanied her mother-in-law back to her ancestral home in Bethlehem after both her husband and her sons had died on their homestead in Moab. More than anything else, the story of Ruth emphasiz-es devotion to the God of Israel and the importance of strong family ties. It may seem superfluous to call special attention to God’s side of the faith-and-family equation in this book, for it is obvious. The characters repeatedly seek to do what is right in God’s sight, and constantly call upon Him to bless their efforts. It will be sufficient here to recall how Ruth convinced her mother-in-law not to make her go back to her parents when Naomi, bereaved of not only her hus-band but both sons, decided to return to Judah. Her two widowed daughters-in-law loved Naomi and wished to accompany her, but Ruth alone overcame Naomi’s reluctance to take them away from all that they knew. “See, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her gods; return after your sister-in-law,” Naomi said. But Ruth replied in one of the most famous speeches in all of Scripture:
Entreat me not to leave you or to return from following you; for where you go, I will go, and where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my peo-ple, and your God my God; where you die I will die and there will I be bur-ied. May the LORD do so to me and more also if even death parts me from you. [Ruth 1:15-17]
Clearly Ruth has a rare devotion to God, and a rare devotion to the woman who had taught her how to worship Him. Family relationships From this point on, Ruth’s story revolves around the recovery of strong family relationships which have otherwise been lost. It is thoroughly rooted in the rights and duties of family members under the Covenant in Israel. Throughout Scrip-ture, Jewish women (and their husbands) felt it was a reproach to them to fail to have children—a great sorrow which often had social repercussions. Repeated-ly, beginning with Abraham’s wife Sarah, we also witness near-miraculous births to aging women who have poured out their grief to God. In fact, immediately after the Book of Ruth closes, at the very start of the First Book of Samuel, we find a childless woman, Hannah, in the Temple, overwhelmed with sadness, si-lently lamenting her barrenness:
As she continued praying before the LORD…Eli [the priest] took her to be a drunken woman. And Eli said to her, “How long will you be drunken? Put away your wine from you.” But Hannah answered, “No, my lord, I am a

Continued from page 2... woman sorely troubled…. Do not regard your maidser-vant as a base woman, for all along I have been speak-ing out of my great anxiety and vexation.” Then Eli an-swered, “Go in peace, and the God of Israel grant your petition which you have made to him.” Then the wom-an went her way and ate, and her countenance was no longer sad. [1 Sam 12-18]
Hannah became the mother of Samuel, a great prophet, who crowned David King of Israel. In Sacred Scripture, the glory of Israel always runs through women, who alone can give birth to the future. Intensity of devotion It is this intensity of devotion to faith and family that ani-mates the entire Book of Ruth. As women with no means of support, both Ruth and Naomi live on the knife-edge of poverty. It is only Naomi’s secure knowledge of the LORD’s will regarding widows in Israel, and her trust that a good man will do God’s will, that enables her to guide Ruth to a solution, for Ruth did not yet know the full importance of family responsibility among the Jews. A prosperous farmer named Boaz took pity on Ruth when she was gleaning grain in his fields (another custom for the sustenance of the poor). Boaz was generous; he also of-fered her protection in the fields, along with the other maidens of his household. But it turns out that Boaz was very near kin to Naomi, and so Naomi counseled Ruth con-cerning the customary way for her to indicate that she de-sired Boaz’s support in far deeper and more enduring ways. Astonished and pleased, Boaz replied:
And now it is true that I am a near kinsman, yet there is a kinsman nearer than I…. [I]f he will do the part of the next of kin for you, well; let him do it; but if he is not will-ing to do the part of the next of kin for you, then, as the LORD lives, I will do the part of the next of kin for you. [Ruth 3:12-13]
Immediately Boaz went to the city gates, intercepted the next of kin as he entered the town, and assembled elders as witnesses to their discussion. He first explained that the next of kin had the right to redeem the land belonging to Naomi’s deceased husband (Elimelech), indicating that if the next of kin did not want to do this, Boaz himself was
next in line and would do it. But the next of kin was willing to redeem the land. Next, Boaz explained:
“The day you buy the field from the hand of Naomi, you are also buying Ruth the Moabitess, the widow of the dead, in order to restore the name of the dead to his inheritance.” Then the next of kin said, “I cannot re-deem it for myself lest I impair my own inheritance. Take my right of redemption yourself, for I cannot redeem it.” [Ruth 4:5-6]
It only enhances the impact of this book that the last chap-ter informs us of one more thing: Through Ruth, Boaz be-came the father of Obed, Obed the father of Jesse...and Jesse the father of David. God’s plan Most readers will probably remember the LORD’s com-mand that when a man died, his widow should not be cut off, but the man’s brother or other near kin should take her to wife and raise up an heir for the one who had died (e.g., Deut 25). It is just this combination of love for God and fam-ily piety—indicating a deep and well-ordered concern for the common good—which is at work in the Book of Ruth. These actions and attitudes were particularly important in a culture in which women had few ways to make their own way, but they were even more deeply rooted in respect for God’s gifts, especially the gift of children, and respect for the families within which these gifts are nurtured to bear fruit in the sight of the LORD. How strange these realities of life under the Old Covenant must seem in a culture which knows little beyond the un-trammeled liberty of the individual! No wonder our modern culture produces so many disoriented, insecure, and des-pairing individuals—men and women who are well-acquainted with the emptiness of mere pleasure but have only rarely, if ever, experienced the security of real love. One of the great and enduring purposes of the Book of Ruth is to place before us the proper and essential ground-ing of our personal and social existence—to make us know beyond doubt our rootedness in both Divine and familial love.

W ith the installation of the retablo paintings, the reno-vation of the sanctuary is now complete. While the
execution of these images took longer than expected, I hope that you will agree that they were worth the wait. These holy images are a visible sign of the Communion of the Saints, and of our Christian vocation to be united with Christ in everything, including His holy and saving Cross. The painting to the left of the crucifix depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary and St. Joseph. Mary is gazing up towards her divine Son, her countenance evincing a profound unity with the sufferings of Christ. St. Joseph is turned toward the viewer, his extended hand inviting us to enter into this scene and stand with them at the foot of the Cross. Mary’s image is surrounded by roses, a symbol of her pro-found love for God and for us. Joseph stands in a field of lilies, a sign of his purity of body and soul. An angel hovers above them, holding a shield with the coat-of-arms of Pope Francis, a sign of the universal Church.
The painting on the right depicts our patron saint, Elizabeth Ann Seton, and closer to the Cross, the Venerable Antonio Margil, O.F.M. St. Elizabeth is the first native-born American to be canonized. As a foundress of an order of teaching sisters, St. Elizabeth founded the first Catholic elementary school, and is considered the mother of the American paro-chial school system. Fr. Pilgrimage to Germany and Austria with Fr. Paul Lockey — May 11 – 20, 2020
This is a once-in-a-lifetime pilgrimage to Germany and Austria visiting religious and cultural sites in Munich, Freising, the Obersalzberg Mountains, Berchtesga-den, Salzburg, Regensburg, Nuremberg, and Rothenberg concluding with the 42nd performance of the world-famous Passion Play in Oberammergau. This unique production only takes place every decade. The history of the Pas-sion Play dates back to 1633. In the middle of the Thirty Years War, after months of suffering and death from the plague, the Oberammergau villagers swore an oath that they would perform the "Play of the Suffering, Death and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ" every ten years. The villagers have fulfilled their promise to God every ten years since this pledge. What a tremendous and unique way for us to unite our own spiritual journey with this extraordinary tradition of faith. We hope you will prayerfully consider joining your brothers and sisters in Christ on this pilgrimage. Flyers are available in the parish office.

How to go to Confession In order to make a good confession, we examine our conscience, asking God’s help to know our sins and to be truly sorry for them.
R i te of Reconci l iat ion
Priest: In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. Penitent: Amen. Bless me, Father, for I have sinned. It has been (say how long) since my last confession. My sins are (confess your sins). When you are done, the priest will give you spiritu-al advice and assign a penance. He will then ask you to pray an Act of Contrition, for example: Lord Jesus Christ, son of God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
- or- O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell; but most of all because they have offended Thee, my God, Who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve wit the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen. The Priest then says the Prayer of Absolution while the penitent listens. At the conclusion of the pray-er, make the sign of the Cross and say, “Amen.” Priest: Go in peace. Penitent: Thanks be to God.
Complete your penance as soon as possible. If you were giv-en prayers to say, try to pray them in church before departing.
Sacerdote: Sin pecado concebida. Penitente: Bendígame padre porque he pecado.

Thinking about joining us? Inspired by Gospel values, the Society of St. Vincent de Paul is a Catholic lay organization that leads women and men to grow spiritually by offering person-to-person service to the needy and suffering in the tradition of its founder, Blessed Frederic Ozanam (1813-1853) and patron, St. Vincent de Paul (1581-1660). Members, known as Vin-centians, are drawn from every ethnic and cultural background, age group and economic level. Our SEAS Conference serves parishioners and all within our church boundaries. Contact our office at 281-463-4560 or send an email to [email protected] for more info. Have a blessed week!
Thanksgiving After Mass St. Thomas Aquinas Lord, Father all-powerful and ever-living God, I thank You, for even though I am a sinner, your unprofitable servant, not because of my worth but in the kindness of your mer-cy, You have fed me with the Precious Body & Blood of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that this Holy Communion may not bring me condemnation and punishment but forgiveness and salva-tion. May it be a helmet of faith and a shield of good will. May it purify me from evil ways and put an end to my evil passions. May it bring me charity and patience, humility and obedience, and growth in the power to do good. May it be my strong defense against all my enemies, visible and invisible, and the perfect calming of all my evil impuls-es, bodily and spiritual. May it unite me more closely to you, the One true God, and lead me safely through death to everlasting happiness with You. And I pray that You will lead me, a sinner, to the banquet where you, with Your Son and holy Spirit, are true and per-fect light, total fulfillment, everlasting joy, gladness without end, and perfect happiness to your saints. grant this through Christ our Lord, AMEN.

St. Vincent de Paul was born to a poor peasant family in the French village of Pouy on April 24, 1581. His first formal education was provided by the Franciscans. He did so well, he was hired to tutor the children of a nearby wealthy family. He used the monies he earned teaching to continue his formal studies at the University of Toulose where he studied theology. He was ordained in 1600 and remained in Toulose for a time. In 1605, while on a ship traveling from Marseilles to Narbone, he was captured, brought to Tunis and sold as a slave. Two years later he and his master managed to escape and both returned to France. From that point forward he spent his life preaching missions to and provid-ing relief to the poor. He even established hospitals for them. This work be-came his passion. He later extended his concern and ministry to convicts. The need to evangelize and assist these souls was so great and the de-mands beyond his own ability to meet that he founded the Ladies of Chari-ty, a lay institute of woman, to help, as well as a religious institute of priests - the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, commonly referred to now as the Vincentians.
