FROM THE DESK OF MONSIGNOR BUTLER

PENTECOST

Today the Church celebrates the Solemnity of Pentecost which commemorates the Descent of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles, fifty days after Easter. Traditionally Pentecost was celebrated, like Easter and Christmas, for eight days, with the Octave Day commemorating the Holy Trinity.

This year Pope Francis established a new celebration for the Church on the Monday after Pentecost. The new memorial is devoted to Mary as the “Mother of the Church.” This title of Mary has ancient roots in Catholic tradi-tion, reaching back to St. Augustine and St. Leo the Great. As the decree announcing the new memorial stated, “Mary became the tender Mother of the Church which Christ begot on the Cross, handing on the Spirit. Christ in turn chose all disciples as ministers of His love towards His Mother, entrusting Her to them so that they might welcome Her with filial affection.” This year’s celebration of Mary, Mother of the Church will be on May 21st.

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL It is not too late to contribute to this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. If you have not already done so, please com-plete your ACA card and return it to the rectory or drop it in the collection basket at Sunday Mass.

DYNAMIC CATHOLIC, ALIVE! - PENTECOST - FILLED WITH THE HOLY SPIRIT

In Baptism and Confirmation, as well as Holy Communion, the gifts of the Holy Spirit are poured out upon us so that we might build up the Church and lead others to faith in Jesus Christ. Today, take a moment to consider the many gifts you have been given, especially spiritual gifts, and pray for the grace to understand how you can uti-lize them most effectively for the mission of your family, parish, and the Church as a whole. The Holy Spirit is powerful in our lives if we allow Him entry into our hearts. He is the consoler, the Advocate, the Paraclete. The Holy Spirit, as the readings show us today, gives us joy and peace, a peace unlike any other the world can give. When we respond generously to grace and allow ourselves to be filled with the Holy Spirit, we will set hearts on fire, one person at a time, and be truly free. archstl.org/dynamic

The Next Chapter program is grounded in Ignatian spirituality and is sponsored by the Saint Louis University Office of Mission and Identity. It is a six-month guided journey with a group of approximately fifteen people who are approaching retirement or who are re-cently retired. The ultimate goal of the program is to assist people to discern who God is calling them to be and what God is calling them to do in their next chapter of life. The class is open to men, women and couples. The program begins in September of 2018. The cost is $750.00. To learn more about The Next Chapter program and have an op-portunity to ask questions, you are invited to attend an information session held in the

Loyola Room in Jesuit Hall at St. Louis University starting at 7:00 p.m. on, May 21, 2018 or June 5, 2018. To RSVP for an information session and/ or to request more information on the program, please email Tom Auffenberg at [email protected].

KIDS AGAINST HUNGER

Please support the teens of our youth ministry as they fundraise for Kids Against Hunger, an organiza-tion they will be serving during their Project Life service trip this June. Please put your donation of any amount in the container in the church vestibule. Thank you for your support.

OUTREACH UPDATE

We have come to the end of our Parish Outreach program. Over the past three years, we have knocked on 3096 doors within our Parish boundaries and spoken with 1308 of our neighbors. We have asked them to join us for fish fries and pancake breakfasts, handed out registration forms for Vacation Bible School and ACTS Retreats, and asked them to attend Mass with us. Many people had special intentions they asked us to pray for and most appre-ciated us stopping by their homes. While we will never really know the results of our efforts, we trust the Holy Spir-it to continue calling our neighbors back to the Church.

Many people volunteered, but I would especially like to thank Paul Kohl, who provided the maps we used each week, and our “regulars”: Betsy Carlsen, Sue Carron, Chris Danter, John & Susie Gorman, Bob Helmsing, Dick and Mary James, Mary LaBelle, Chris Normile, Sandy Pollmann, Tony Sandifer, Vicki Staed, Marge Sweeney, and Randy Todd. As is usually the case when you volunteer, you get a lot more out of the experience than you give, and it has truly been a blessing to spend time with these volunteers every week and to share our love for God and Saint Clement of Rome with those we met. Thanks so much! Jean Sandifer

PRAY AND FAST TOGETHER FOR CONVERSIONS

“We must therefore find out by whom we are led. If it is not by the Holy Spirit, we labor in vain; there is no sub-stance nor savor in anything we do. If it is by the Holy Spirit, we taste a delicious sweetness; it is enough to make us die of pleasure.” -Saint John Vianney

This week join fellow parishioners in offering prayers and the sacrifice of your Friday fast for Conversion of Hearts--so that all might savor the sweetness of the Holy Spirit; for our parish growth in holiness, and for the re-turn of families, our nation and our broken world to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and a Culture of Life. “Come Holy Spirit, fill our hearts with your love!”
