SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses the

ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our colum-

barium will have 80 compartments which will be topped by a

statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure will be the

words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany at the grave

of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection and the Life, he

who believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live.” (John

11:25) For those who choose cremation, the columbarium is

the place (along with the ground) which the Catholic Church

states is the proper place for the burial of the faithful de-

parted’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on the left

side of the cemetery as you enter through the main gate. One

may purchase a burial niche as soon as the structure is in place

and after it has been blessed. Information regarding the price

for the burial spot will be announced in the coming weeks.

For further information you may speak to me or the cemetery

administrator, Mrs. Diane Boykow, by calling the parish of-

fice. – FATHER ZIG

580-St. Cecilia

St. Lydia was a woman of Thyatira in the district of Lydia, the west-central portion of the Roman province of Asia, a district famed for its purple dyes. She was living as a dealer in purple goods at Philippi when St. Paul first came to the city about the year 55. Till then she had been a “worshiper of God,” the technical name for a partial convert to Judaism. Under the influence of St. Paul’s powerful preaching she received Christian Baptism—together with her entire household. This conversion represents the first one mentioned in Europe.

Since Lydia was apparently a wealthy woman, she then insisted on providing hospitality for St. Paul and his companions Luke and Silas during their stay at Philippi. St. Luke later wrote a re-cord of this event in his history of the early Church, known as the Acts of the Apostles (chapter 16, verses 11 to 15).

PRAYER Pour forth on us, Lord, that spirit of knowledge and love of You with which You filled Your handmaid, Lydia. Help us to serve You sincerely by closely imitating her and so please You by our Faith and works. Amen.

St. Lydia

August 3—Patroness of Dyers

My Dear Parishioners,

Today is the Lord’s Day and the 17th Sunday in Ordinary Time. In the Gospel we hear the Lord Jesus, like last Sunday, speak in

parables to His disciples about the Kingdom of God. WISDOM is the virtue which is being addressed along with the discernment

which accompanies it. Wisdom is not the completion of academic studies nor the prize which awaits its pursuer. Rather, wisdom

is a gift of the Holy Spirit which comes from God. The Church lists 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit: wisdom, understanding, counsel,

fortitude, knowledge, piety and fear of the Lord. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:” The moral life of Christians is

sustained by the gifts of the Holy Spirit. These are permanent dispositions which make man docile in following the promptings of

the Holy Spirit.” (#1830)

The gift of wisdom comes to our assistance in discerning which path to pursue, what choices to make. It is like a lamp which

shines within us allowing us to see clearly so as to conduct ourselves in living a virtuous life and the pursuit of holy endeavors.

Wisdom is by our side making decisions which will strengthen our desire for the Kingdom of God. The Apostle Paul alluded to

this in his correspondence to the Philippians:”Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, what-

ever is lovely, whatever is gracious, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these

things.” (4:8)

Yes, the Holy Spirit’s gift of wisdom comes to the assistance of the faithful one who is open to the promptings of the Holy Spirit

through prayer, that is, a listening heart. Like King Solomon in today’s Old Testament reading we must pray that the Lord will

send us the gift of wisdom so that we may make the correct choices in our daily affairs. We must be mindful of the popular and

atheistic forces which are present in our world today, that they may not get a foothold in our decisions but that “Holy Wisdom”

will be at our side.

Among the many titles given to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, is HAGIA SOPHIA. This is Greek for “HOLY WISDOM.” It

was the name given to the Basilica in Constantinople which had once served as the largest Church in the Roman Empire before it

was seized by the Moslems and turned into a mosque.

We pray that the Lord Jesus, Hagia Sophia, will send us the Holy Spirit’s gift of wisdom to guide us in our decisions so that dis-

cerning rightly, we may choose the Kingdom of God above all else.

God bless you!

Father Zig
