PARISH HAPPENINGS

There is still time to participate in the parish Christmas Giving Tree. The tree still has many gift requests (and requests for grocery gift cards) from local families, the residents of Manzanita House Adult living, and those who participate at the Stephens House day facility. The tree will remain in the

church until 11 AM on Sunday, December 15th. Everyone can participate in this parish-wide project by fulfilling a tag and/or making a monetary donation to St. Cecilia’s Society of Saint Vincent de Paul through the offertory and online collections. Please sign one of the Giving Tree books when you take a tag. When you return the gift, please attach the tag on the outside of the wrapped gift or envelope. Gifts should be wrapped; gift cards can be wrapped or put into an envelope. The gifts can be put under the tree whenever the church is open. Small items, like gift cards and envelopes can be placed in the decorated box under the tree. For more information about the project contact Noel Saunders at 206-842-5142 or [email protected].

St. Cecilia Parish will again be providing a Christmas dinner at the Matt Talbot Center for up to 300 people in need on Saturday, December 14. A collection box will be in the vestibule for gift items to be distributed

Please consider donating the following new and unwrapped items: toys for children, gifts for teens, sports gear, gloves, hats, scarves, sweaters and coats (larger sizes), gift cards to Walmart, Target, Safeway, QFC, Costco, McDonalds, and Starbucks. For more information on the Matt Talbot Center, please visit www.mtcenter.org. If you are interested in helping out the day of the event or by preparing food ahead of time (ham, scalloped potatoes, salads, deviled eggs, rolls, satsuma oranges, and Christmas cookies) please contact Amy Curran at [email protected].

PRINCIPAL’S CORNER

Veterans Serving Others

To honor our veterans during the second week in November, we invited Commander Brian Broadwell, father of two SCCS students, to speak to our whole school community about his service in the Navy. We all gathered in a big circle on the first floor to learn about his education, experience and service.

After asking students to raise their hands if they have a veteran in their family, he shared that he earned a Master Degree in Software Engineering and a Master Degree in Executive Business Administration during his time in the Navy. His career as a Commander in the Navy has taken him to 42 states and 16 countries. He told us the Cape of Africa was amazing.

Because we had so many students and teachers proudly raising their hands to indicate that they have a veteran in their family, I decided to review our family directory and add up the exact numbers.

As it turns out, twelve SCCS students have one or more family members who are serving or have served in a branch of the military. Four of our teachers have a veteran in their immediate family. So, remarkably, 16 of our school community families include a veteran or veterans.

Serving others is central to our Catholic faith. Our veterans model for us on a daily basis what it means to serve. We are deeply grateful for their service.

With gratitude, Susan Kilbane
