SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM A Pre-Baptismal Class is held the third Monday of each month at 7:00 pm in the parish office. The next class is Monday, June 19th. To register for the class, please call 973-627-0313 . Both parents are encouraged to attend the class before the birth of the baby. June 3, 2017 will mark the 200th birthday of Blessed

Pauline von Mallinckrodt (Mother Pauline), founder of the

Sisters of Christian Charity. In an effort to make Mother

Pauline better known, we present the last in our series of

biographical sketches.

On August 21, 1849, Pauline and three other women be-

came the first Sisters of Christian Charity at a ceremony in

Germany. From that time on the congregation grew and

spread, expanding its sphere of activity to embrace men

and women of every generation, every social level, every

religion, rich or poor, infants or the aged. By 1871, there

were 250 Sisters of Christian Charity ministering in Ger-

many. In 1873, the Sisters began their service in North

America and in 1874, they began to serve in South Amer-

ica.

Mother Pauline died in 1881 at the age of 63. She was

beatified by Paul John Paul II in 1985. Her legacy contin-

ues today through almost 450 Sisters of Christian Charity

who minister in the United States, Chile, Uruguay, Argen-

tina, Bolivia, Germany, Italy (Rome), and the Philippines.

FAREWELL RECEPTION – With the an-

nounced transfer of both Father Marcin and Fa-

ther Mateusz, a luncheon reception in their honor

will take place on Sunday, June 25th in Hayes

Hall immediately following the 12:15 pm Mass.

This will be the final Sunday Mass which both

priests will concelebrate in our church. We are

asking all those who plan to attend the reception

vations. We are making this request so that we

Fatima and Southern Spain Pilgrimage

Bishop Serratelli will be the Spiritual Director of a

trip this summer to Fatima and Southern Spain.

The Diocese of Paterson will be hosting the 2017 Pilgrimage

this October to the National Shrine, The Basilica of the Im-

maculate Conception in Washington D.C.. on October 20 &

21, 2017. The trip includes transportation, two meals includ-

ing the banquet, overnight accommodations at the Westin

Hotel in Virginia, and spiritual visits to America’s Frist Ca-

thedral, and St. Jude Shrine in Baltimore, and the National

Shrine of the Immaculate conception. Included will be daily

Masses for Friday and Saturday Confession, devotional time,

CELEBRATION IN HONOR OF THE MOST SA-

CRED HEART OF JESUS – The Solemnity of the

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus will be observed on Friday,

June 23rd at Sacred Heart of Jesus Church on East Main

Street. The feast day begins with the celebration of the

Holy Mass at 6:30 in the evening, followed by an out-

door procession with the Most Blessed Sacrament, and

the singing of the Litany to the Most Sacred Heart of

Jesus. Following the church service a reception will take

place in Suchon Hall along with a brief program. ALL

ARE WELCOME TO ATTEND TO JOIN IN CELE-

BRATING THIS SPECIAL FEAST!

SAINT CECILIA CEMETERY – I used Memorial Day

weekend to announce an addition to the Saint Cecilia Ceme-

tery. A COLUMBARIUM is being constructed, off site, and

will be delivered to the cemetery sometime in August. A

“columbarium” is an above ground structure which houses

the ashes of the departed in individual compartments. Our

columbarium will have 80 compartments which will be

topped by a statue of the Risen Christ. Around the structure

will be the words the Lord Jesus spoke to Martha in Bethany

at the grave of her brother Lazarus, “I am the Resurrection

and the Life, he who believes in me, though he die, yet shall

he live.” (John 11:25) For those who choose cremation, the

columbarium is the place (along with the ground) which the

Catholic Church states is the proper place for the burial of the

faithful departed’s ashes. The columbarium will be placed on

the left side of the cemetery as you enter through the main

gate. One may purchase a burial niche as soon as the struc-

ture is in place and after it has been blessed. Information re-

garding the price for the burial spot will be announced in the

CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION – The Solemnity

of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ, commonly

known as Corpus Christi, will be celebrated on Sunday,

June 18th. An outdoor procession with the Most Blessed

Sacrament will take place at Saint Cecilia Church be-

ginning at 1:30 p.m. A special invitation is given to

children to serve strewing flower petals during the pro-

cession and to be altar servers. I ask that parents please

help me in guiding their children to serve our Lord on

Quo Vadis Days is a time of recreation, fellowship, and

Pre-K3 learned about the weather, specifically rain and the water cycle. Each child also experimented with wa-ter and what is absorbent and waterproof. The children enjoyed squirting their teacher with water while she wore waterproof clothing to show them she can't get wet!

Corpus Christi Food Collection

Due to the unprecedented requests for assistance from

Catholic Charities’ food pantries and in order to fulfill our

obligations to the poor, Bishop Serratelli has authorized a

Diocesan-wide food collection in all parishes and agencies on

the Feast of Corpus Christi, Saturday/Sunday, June 17-18!

We are all being asked to bring assorted food products on

that day. St. Cecilia Church has been asked to provide cook-

ies, crackers, and facial tissue. Cash donations will also be

accepted. Please mark Saturday and Sunday, June 17-18 as

the food collection day in order to help those in need in our

Diocesan community of Morris, Passaic and Sussex Coun-

ties. Thank you!

Born at Nisibis, a city in Roman Mesopotamia, St. Ephrem was banished from his home by his pagan father for his Christian sympathies. He found refuge with St. James, Bishop of Nisibis, under whose guidance he received a thorough education. Baptized at eighteen years of age, he assumed a post as a teacher in the flourishing school of Nisibis. After the death of St. James he fled to Edessa, where, after entering the monastic life, he was ordained deacon.

He wrote many works in defense of the Catholic Church, on the various mysteries of Our Lord Jesus Christ and in honor of the Virgin Mary. Poet, exegete, and orator extraordinary, St. Ephrem was called “The Prophet of the Syrians” and “The Lyre of the Holy Spirit.” He died in 373, and was numbered among the Doctors of the Church in 1920 by Pope Benedict XV.

Prayer Lord, graciously infuse the Holy Spirit into our hearts. By His inspiration, St. Ephrem the Deacon rejoiced in singing of Your mysteries and through His power he merited to be seated with You. Amen

ST. EPHREM, Deacon And Doctor of the Church

My Dear Parishioners,

Today is the 50th and final day of Easter, the Solemnity of Pentecost. The first reading in today’s Mass from Acts of the Apostles

tells us how it all happened in the Upper Room at 9 o’clock in the morning. Today is the “Birthday of the Church.” The breath of

the Holy Spirit blew upon the Apostles and Disciples bringing them to life as the Catholic Church. After the outpouring of the

Holy Spirit the followers of the Risen Jesus left the Cenecle (Upper Room) and made their way into the marketplace proclaiming

the Gospel. Their witness brought many to the faith that day and all the days to follow.

The message proclaimed by Jesus’ disciples was evident in the manner in which they lived and how they interacted with the

world. These first Christians found themselves living in a culture, a society, which in many ways was alien to their faith. They

did not make provision for the ways of the world into their families and lives but rather lived the Gospel message with fidelity.

They were in the world but not part of its standards. They realized that they could not live like their neighbors but were called to

embrace the higher values of Heaven.

As these first followers of Jesus saw themselves as different from others (not superior), so too should we live our lives differently

from some of our friends and neighbors. It is so very important for us to know our faith and how the Lord is calling us to holi-

ness, which means departing from secular ways. We must always remember how important it is for families to serve as “schools

of faith,” places where the ways of Jesus are learned and practiced. Today’s feast is a wonderful day to ask God the Holy Spirit

to fill our hearts with a renewed desire to live and share our faith in Christ the Savior.

This is a special week for us in Rockaway as we will witness the first 8th Grade graduation from Divine Mercy Academy, our

Catholic school in town. The graduation ceremony will take place within the celebration of the Holy Mass on Friday evening in

Sacred Heart of Jesus Church. Divine Mercy Academy, the merger of Sacred Heart of Jesus School and Saint Cecilia School, is

nearly completing its first year of existence. Our school has served our children well in providing a Catholic education which is

enhanced by the Gospel. I pray that our graduates will enter their new phase of life equipped with the values they have learned

and practiced in our school. To our 8th Grade Graduates: GOD BLESS YOU AND MAY THE HOLY SPIRIT GUIDE YOU IN

ALL YOUR ENDEAVORS. May these same blessings come to all of our young people who will be graduating from a variety of

schools in these coming days.
