ATTENTION MEN – A new men’s group called FATHERS
OF ST. JOSEPH will be meeting every other Saturday morn-
ing at 5:30 a.m. in the St. Cecilia Office Building. The sole
aim and purpose of the group is to labor for the restoration,
revitalization and redemption of human fatherhood, in order
that it may become what it has been created to be: an effica-
cious icon that directs the human family to its Father. The
Fathers of St. Joseph gatherings are not so much meetings as
they are mini retreats, whose aim is to communicate the spiri-
tuality of fatherhood in a manner that encourages and inspires
fathers to embrace, engage and – by the power of the Holy
Spirit – sanctify their vocation. The next gathering is SAT-

An Invitation
to a presentation on the threats to Freedom
of Religion in contemporary US society
“The framers of our Constitution meant we were to have free-
dom of religion, not freedom from religion.” Billy Graham
quotes (American Evangelist)
"Religious freedom is not just 'an important element' of democ-
racy; it is its cornerstone. Religious persecution leads inevita-
bly to political tyranny. Five hundred years of history confirm
this." — Tony Perkins (President Family Research Council)
"Religious freedom is not only that of private thought or wor-
ship. It is the liberty to live, both privately and publicly, ac-
cording to the ethical principles resulting from found truth".
(Pope Francis I - June 20, 2014)
The above quotes are indicative of the importance of Freedom
of Religion and the ever increasing loss of this most important
freedom. As individuals, we should all be concerned that our
culture has lost respect for religious perspectives and has
sought to prevent religiously motivated people from expressing
their moral values in public discourse and action. Unfortu-
nately, most people are unaware that there have been and con-
tinues to be many attempts by government and public institu-
tions to coerce individuals and religious institutions to act in
violation of their consciences.
If Religious Liberty is important to not only you, but also and
more importantly to your children and grandchildren, and you
wish to explore this issue, please come to a meeting of simi-
larly interested individuals. At this meeting, you will learn
about the ever increasing loss of respect for religiously moti-
vated public discourse and action in contemporary society.
You will hear about the extent of the assault on Religious Lib-
erty by government at all levels and in schools at all levels.

St. Bridgid is known as the second Patron of Ireland and “the Mary of the Gael.” Born in County Louth near Dundalk about 450, of parents baptized by St. Patrick, she showed signs of sanctity from her youth. According to a legend, she asked God to take away her beauty in order to escape marriage and pursue her religious vocation. And when she received the veil from St. Mel, her beauty which had given way to de-formity returned.
She founded the first convent in Ireland at “Cil-Dara” (the Church of the Oak), now Kildare, over which she presided many years. She also established communities in other parts of Ireland and by her prayers and miracles exercised a potent influence on the growth of the early Irish Church.
St. Bridgid was generous and joyful, vehement and energetic. Her one desire was to aid the poor and needy and relieve those in distress. One of her friends once brought her a basket of choice apples and saw her distribute them to the crowd of sick people thronging about her. The friend could not refrain from exclaiming: “They were for you, not for them.” St. Bridgid simply said: “What is mine is theirs.” She died in 523 and was buried in Downpatrick in the same grave as Sts. Patrick and Columba.
PRAYER Lord, our God, grant that Your faithful spouse, St. Bridgid, may kindle the flame of Divine love in us for the everlasting glory of Your Church. Amen.

ST. BRIDGID (BRIDE) OF IRELAND, Virgin
February 1—Patroness of Dairy Workers
My Dear Parishioners,
Today we mark the Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time as we celebrate the Lord’s Day. I am celebrating the Lord’s Day today in
Jerusalem and in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre. It is in this church that Calvary, the place of Jesus’ crucifixion is located, and
the Tomb of Christ is also found. I am remembering all of you, my dear people of Rockaway, as I pray before these sacred places
which were the scenes of our salvation.
The Gospel Acclamation which we sing at today’s liturgy is: “The people who sit in darkness have seen a great light; on those
dwelling in a land overshadowed by death, a light has arisen.” The Holy Resurrection of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ
has dispelled the darkness of death. The bright and eternal light of Christ now shines upon all those who trust in Him, both the
living and the dead. What a privilege to be here, in the place where death was defeated on that first Easter Sunday. This Easter
victory is celebrated by us in Rockaway every first day of the week, on Sunday - the Lord’s Day, and over one billion Christians
around the world join us in doing so. More about the Holy Land when I come home on Wednesday.
Today we begin the start of CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK. The theme for this year’s observance is: “Learn, Serve, Lead,
Succeed.” Here in Rockaway we are blessed to have a Catholic School in our community, DIVINE MERCY ACADEMY. This
school provides the best in Catholic education from preschool 3 to grade 8 boasting of an excellent faculty, current technology,
extracurricular activities, and so much more. Most especially is the daily surrounding of academics with Christian faith and val-
ues which forms our students in ways which other schools cannot compete. The best and the finest are found in Catholic educa-
tion and I invite all parents of our parish to investigate what we have to offer at Divine Mercy Academy. If you want the best for
your child, contact our principal, Mrs. Ann Mitchell (973.627.6003) who will be happy to give you a tour of the facility and an-
swer your questions.
Our children are a treasure for which we must provide the very best in faith based education. In addition to encouraging parents
to investigate Catholic schools I also encourage you to enroll your teens in the TRUE LOVE WAITS PROGRAM which be-
gins this week at Saint Cecilia Church for parishioners of both Sacred Heart of Jesus and Saint Cecilia Churches. This chastity
program is one which all parents should guide their young people to attend which can save them from disaster.
Mom and Dad, both” Catholic Schools Week” and “True Love Waits” should not be overlooked by you! I commend both of
them to you for serious consideration as you fulfill your duties as Christian parents.
Prayers and best wishes from the Holy Land!
