SECOND SUNDAY OF ORDINARY TIME

FROM THE DESK OF FR. SERGIO OVANDO, PASTOR….

Dear brothers and sisters, every year during this time in the entire country people pray, people walk and people make demonstrations in de-fense for life. We invite you all to participate in the Walk for Life that will take place in San Fran-cisco next weekend. We must understand that as Catholics when we pray for life, we pray for life in all moments of its existence, from the moment of conception to death, with each one of the intermediate mo-ments. Normally the defense for life is understood as the defense of the most defenseless, those who are about to be born, the child in the bosom of his mother. Among the weak that the Church wants to take care of with predilection are "the unborn children, who are the most defenseless and innocent of all, to whom today they want to deny their human dignity in order to do with them what they want, taking away the life and promoting legislation so that nobody can prevent it » (Pope Francis) This is the beginning of life, the defense of life begins here and extends beyond. As believers, we support the right to a life and a respectable and dignified old age. As long as there is encouragement in the human being, it must be respected. This is one of the inaliena-ble rights of the human being, a right without which no other right can be sustained, since the rights are for those who are alive. However, it is not just a right "to life" but as Pope Francis says: "In the first place is the inviolable dignity of every human person, from the moment of conception until his last breathe", that is, a "dignified life”. Like many gifts, Life is a gift given by God; it car-ries with it the duality of rights and obligations. As a believer, we have the obligation to do eve-rything possible for the right to life of those who cannot fight for themselves, children, the poor, the marginalized, the elderly, and anyone who for some reason or another are weak and de-fenseless in society, the anawim of the Lord. I ask and invite you to continue praying for life, and for a dignified life.

STEWARDSHIP IN SCRIPTURE by Deacon Rick Haeckel

The wedding feast at Cana is powerfully rich, almost redolent of wonderful inspiring details. The most obvious is the symbol of Jesus’ ability to change a seeming disaster into a moment of plenty. It doesn’t take many words to describe the change of water into wine but, as Fr. Ray Brown says, In the sign at Cana “sign” indicates the human viewpoint wherein attention is directed not so much to the miraculous itself (which may or may not lead to true faith) but to what is revealed by the miracle to those who can see beyond.” (emphasis added) Ah there we have it, more work :-). The story is easily remembered because of the relative simple actions. Mary tells Jesus there is no wine, Jesus responds showing apparent indifference, Mary then tells the servers to do what Jesus tells them and finally the changing of water to wine is accomplished to the amazement of all. In a larger sense this is a story of a problem and its solution, albeit a miraculous one. We easily join those in awe of Jesus’ power, a power which invites his disciples (and us) to “believe in him.” The next question, attempting to “see beyond,” asks us something like Jesus asked his Mother Mary, “what has that to do with me?” We are invited to see more than the physical transformation of water into wine. Have you ever considered yourself as water that, by the power of belief in Jesus, can transform us into proverbial wine? That sense, that we are to be open to transformation, to continued growth in understanding who Jesus is for us and the world, invites us beyond the mere words of the story to a place which allows an unknown path ahead to be one accompanied by Jesus. Said differently, belief in the events of the wedding feast provides information that we understand and can then “file away.” Walking with Jesus, being a disciple in situations for which there is no literal parallel in Jesus’ life, asks that we internalize the motivation of Jesus at Cana. It wasn’t for his personal gain but for a purpose beyond the moment. Yes, the wedding feast was very successful but even more telling was that his disciples “began to believe in him.” They, like us, benefited by seeing the power of Jesus which led to change their ways to better conform to his call. That call isn’t just a singular moment of awe but also a desire to understand the power of the love he asked of them. Not self-love, which our humanity provides, but a love which has very few, if any, limits. The Gospel of John says it clearly and succinctly, God is love. We can’t be God, but with Jesus’ help and inspiration we can be godlike. Practice “seeing beyond.”

GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK Christmas engenders a desire to give gifts to cele-brate God made man. With good intentions, the gifts we receive, ahem, aren’t always used (think a tie for Dad in the olden days). Don’t just store them away, pass them on, to charity (or even by re-gifting :-)..

DID YOU KNOW?

The Bright Beginnings Nursery is open on Sundays for the 8:45AM and 10:30AM Masses. We have toys and activities for children from ages 1 to 4 years old. Hiedi Betancourt is our Nursery Supervisor and has led the Nursery for years. Enter the Parish Center, and the Nursery is off to the left. We are open when you see the Bright Beginnings sign in the front of the Parish Center.

SUNDAY COFFEE &

DOUGHNUTS We are looking for more volunteers for Sunday Hospitality. It is simple to do, and all we ask is you stay 30 minutes before or after Mass. Can you commit to once every 2 months? This is also a great opportunity for your ministry to serve the Parish and speak with parishioners about who you are and what you do. Check out the groups who have taken ad-vantage of this: Knights of Columbus, Ladies of Charity, Cub Scouts, Com-munity Closet, and others. For more information, email me at [email protected].

GRANDPARENTS/ SPECIAL PERSONS DAY

If you have a grandchild at St. Catherine School, mark your calendar for the morning of Wednesday, January 30. Your grandchild will be inviting you just after the first of the year. Parents will RSVP for guests through a link sent on ParentSquare in early January. For more information, contact Jeff Layne at 408-612-4213 or [email protected].

Save the Date---eWaste Drive The next eWaste Drive sponsored by our Green Team will be Saturday, March 9. Please save those appliances and tech items that you no longer use. Help St. Catherine School and our environment at the same time. The money raised from this event will help fund ceiling replacement in the classrooms which will enhance energy efficiency for heating and cooling the rooms, as well as improving acous-tics. This is also a great opportunity to get par-ent hours or student service hours. Contact Ar-lene Handa at [email protected] .

With the new year, everyone is back at the business of learning. Below, a 6th grader at a Living History presentation for Ancient Egypt.

PROMOTING MATH AND SCIENCE THROUGH SPEAKERS

AND FIELD TRIPS As part of our ongoing efforts to encourage and promote a love for and understanding of how math and science are used in all our lives, St. Catherine School has developed a list of speak-ers and field trips which will make math and sci-ence come to life for our students. Each class schedules two speakers and one field trip that focus on math and science during the year. Presentations can be anywhere from 15 minutes (most will be 15-25 minutes long) to nearly an hour depending on the topic and level of students. Do you know someone who uses math routinely at work? Perhaps monitoring inventory, accounting, engineering design, to name a few…please submit names and contact information to Ms. Esparza, 408-779-9950 or [email protected]. The school continues to build a data base of field trip opportunities as well. If you know of a place or program, or are willing to host a class, please let Ms. Esparza know. These can range from water treatment plants to farms to airports and museums. Again, the goal is to get stu-dents excited about how math and science are used and directly affect daily life.

Love God, serve God; everything is in that.
