On Christmas Day, we celebrated that the Word has become flesh and dwells among us. The emphasis is on the humanity of Jesus. That God would be so humbled, and so in love with humans, to become one of us. The Gospel of Luke paints an incredibly earthy and meek Jesus and his family. The beginnings for Jesus are suggested as not just human, but poor. Luke maintains emphasis on poverty and care for the poor throughout his gospel. Epiphany on the other hand reminds us that Jesus is not only fully human, but also fully divine. Jesus, even as a child was God. God is manifest to us, is revealed to the nations, and we proclaim him as our king and our redeemer. The Magi, who are foreigners, seek the newborn king. (This story by the way appears in Matthew’s gospel and makes no mention of a manger or stable.) The manifestation of the unification of God and humanity is not just for Jews, but for all people. St. Paul makes this clear in the Letter to the Ephesians. They don’t just search for Jesus, but they bring gifts, they pay him homage. God who was humbled to take flesh, now invites humans to be humbled in God’s presence. So how do we celebrate this solemnity? We imitate the Magi. We seek God who is our king and redeemer. We share our gifts with God by using them to give glory to God. How can each of us best reflect the glory of Christ who dwells among, both God and human? As the Christmas season draws to a close, let us continue to be mindful of the poor, the weak, the isolated among us.

~Tony Butler, Director of Religious Education

Second Collection for Religious Elderly religious need your help. The religious pictured here represent more than 32,000 senior Catholic brothers,

sisters, and religious order priests living in the US. Years of serving for little or no pay have left a shortage in retirement funding. Your gift helps their religious communities furnish

necessities such as medications and nursing care. It also helps ensure

younger members can continue the good works of their elders. We will

have a second collection next weekend to support these men and

women who have led their lives through prayer, love and sacrifice.

Please be generous.

Bring in Your Palms for This Year’s Ashes!

One of the old traditions of the church was to collect last year’s palms to make this year’s ashes for use on Ash Wednesday. You will find a basket near the baptismal font in which you can deposit

the palms you have in your homes. Please remove any tape, staples, or rubber bands. It would be helpful if you could cut the

larger palms into smaller pieces that will burn more easily.
