Pastor’s Letter Dear Parishioners, This week marks a historic week for the Diocese of Savannah. Bishop-Elect Stephen Parkes will be ordained to the Order of Bishops this Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. at our Cathedral Basilica in Savannah. Archbishop Gregory Hartmayer, our former bishop, will be the principle consecrator. Bishop Parkes’ brother, Bishop Gregory Parkes of Saint Petersburg, Florida, will be a co-consecrator along with Bishop Parkes’ bishop from the Diocese of Orlando, Bishop John Noonan. Three bishops are required to ordain a priest validly to the Order of Bishops. In my 40 years of priesthood, I have had these bishops to whom every priest in our diocese promises respect and obedience in the areas of Faith, Morals, and Canon Law: Bishop Raymond Lessard, Bishop J. Kevin Boland, and Bishop Gregory Hartmayer and very soon Bishop Stephen Parkes. (I was the Master of Ceremonies for Bishop Boland’s ordination in 1995. This is one of my favorite “emcee” photos.) Because of this horrible coronavirus, only bishops and priests will be able to attend the ordination. On Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m., Solemn Sung Vespers will be celebrated at our Cathedral Basilica. This celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours will have lay representatives from throughout the diocese. Our representative is Mr. Russell Wicke, who is our Pastoral Council President, and our very own new deacon, Deacon Ben Ernst, will be present. Both liturgies on Tuesday and Wednesday will be live-streamed on the Cathedral Basilica’s website and our Facebook page and website.

Bishop-Elect Parkes is a very personable man and listens closely to what people say to him. He has already visited many of our parishes and missions. He is 55 years old, athletic, and in very good health, with lots of energy. Oh, to be young again! I hope to schedule him for our two Sunday morning Masses once our Capital Campaign has come to a conclusion, so more than likely in November. Thank you for your kind words after my homily introducing our new Capital Campaign last weekend. Thank you to all who volunteered to assist us with this Campaign, and thank you

to everyone who has already made a pledge/contribution. Moving Forward in Faith Together will help us to reach our $1.3 million goal. God bless you. Your Pastor, Fr. Allan

SEEK Bible Study with Fr. Robert Starts Monday!

For many Catholics today, interpreting the Book of Revelation presents an almost insurmountable challenge. The dizzying array of exotic symbols and apocalyptic warnings can make St. John’s glori-ous vision seem more like an incomprehensible nightmare, prompting us

to ask what did he really see? So, what is the Book of Revelation really about? Join Fr. Robert in a Bible Study, using the teachings of Dr. Scott Hahn, on Mondays from 6:00–7:00 p.m. starting September 21 in Holy Family Hall. Please purchase your own book on Amazon: “The End: The Book of Revelations - Study Guide.” Please email Mrs. Pat Byler ([email protected]) to register.

Catholic Youth Ministry Join us Sunday, September 20 from 6:00–7:30 p.m. in the Teen Center for Letters 1–2 of The Screwtape Letters by CS Lewis. For more information, contact Kathy Zdunich at [email protected] or visit www.stannerh.org/cym.

Religious Education Classes have begun for the 2020-2021 school year. Parents have the option of: 1. In-person classes (11:45 a.m. is still open) 2. Online classes 3. Family Catechesis Please visit www.stannerh.org/ccd for more information and to register.

Saint of the Week: St. Matthew (Feast Day

September 21) St. Matthew was one of Jesus’ 12 Apostles.

Before being called to be an Apostle, St. Matthew was a tax collector, so many people did not like him. He followed Jesus and later wrote the Gospel

of Matthew so we can know about Our Lord’s earthly life! He also spent his life ministering to people

in other countries, like Persia and Ethiopia, so they could know Jesus, too!

(Kids: Please color me!)

Look to the LORD in his strength; seek to serve him constantly.

Your every act should be done with love. —1 Corinthians 16:14

Direction Isaiah tells us something that we already know, and yet seem to forget every now and then. He tells us, essential-ly, that God is God and we are not. When we’re confused and troubled and can’t figure everything out, it might be wise to recall Isaiah speaking on the Lord’s behalf and explaining that God—who is on a much more, well, Godly wavelength than we are—moves in ways we can’t even imagine. Saint Paul, by comparison, has everything figured out. Kind of. At least he understands his calling in life—to magnify Christ in everything he does. That should give all of us the direction we need. Jesus gives us direction, too, explaining to us once again in the parable of the workers in the vineyard that the last will be first, and the first, last.

Permanent Diaconate Class The permanent diaconate is open to single and married men who meet specific requirements. Applications must be received by the Office of the Permanent Diaconate by September 30, 2020, with a class start date of Septem-ber 2021 for those accepted.

Questions should be directed to Deacon Kelley Culver at 706–651–8989. For more information, please visit https://diosav.org/permanent-diaconate/formation.
