SHARE THE BURDEN “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28). These words of our Savior seem to be in stark contrast to the previous chapter from the same Gospel, when we were told that if we do not

take up our crosses, we are not worthy of Christ. Connecting these two messages might help us on our faith journeys. Being a follower of Christ surely means that we must embrace the cross, in its mystery of both suffering and triumph. This is something that we need not do alone, for the burden is often too heavy for us to carry by ourselves. Who, then, do we turn to? We can turn to the Body of Christ—the community of disciples gathered for worship. When we find the burden too heavy, let us

remember that we can share that burden with our Christian sisters and brothers, who can help bring us rest. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

SAINT MARIA GORETTI (1890-1902) July 6 Does anything match a mother’s pride in her children? First Communions, confirmations, graduations, weddings: how these delight a mother’s heart! Imagine, then, Assunta Goretti, the only mother ever to attend her child’s canonization! In poverty-stricken rural Italy, widowed Assunta tended fields for the Serenelli family, whose eighteen-year-old son, Alessandro, propositioned her barely twelve-year-old Maria; then, when she resisted, crying, “It is a sin! God forbids it!” he stabbed her fourteen times. As she lay dying, Maria assured the attending priest, “Yes, I forgive Alessandro! I want him to be in Paradise with me someday.” Imprisoned, unrepentant, Alessandro changed after dreaming that a radiant Maria had offered him fourteen lilies. “I’ve kept my promise,” she smiled. “You’ll be here with me someday.” Upon release, he rushed to beg Assunta’s forgiveness. “Jesus has forgiven you,” she replied, “my Maria, too. Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ!

I have been over a month since we began celebration of the Eucharist with the participation of our faithful. I am very pleased that many of you have returned to our church. I also see a lot of new faces especially during services in Polish. I am saddened however, by the fact that many English-speaking parishioners are still not ready to return to the church in person and participate in the liturgy. I assure you that the church is the safest place during the ongoing pandemic. I am even surprised at the absence of some regularly attending parishioners. From time to time I wonder how long it will this difficult situation last. I am also afraid that many of them may never return to church. This entire situation turns our reality upside down. I know that things will never be the same again as before! During Sunday services, I have been counting our faithful for more than a month. I am also thinking about reducing one Sunday English Mass in our church and moving the Spanish Mass from 6:30 p.m. to an earlier hour. I pray and ask the Holy Spirit to help make the best decision. Many parishes in our Diocese of Chicago are experiencing similar problems and are making some practical and reasonable adjustments. I ask you for your understanding, kindness and prayer in this intention.

Kochani Bracia i Siostry! Od ponad miesiąca powróciliśmy do udziału w Eucharystii z udziałem wiernych. Cieszę się bardzo, że bardzo wielu z was powróciło do naszej świątyni. Widzę też bardzo wiele nowych twarzy szczególnie w czasie nabożeństw w języku polskim. Smuci mnie fakt, że wciąż wielu parafian angielskojęzycznych nie jest gotowych na powrót do budynku kościoła i do udziału w liturgii. Zapewniam was, że kościół jest najbardziej bezpiecznym miejscem w czasie trwającej pandemii wirusa. Nieobecnością niektórych parafian jestem nawet zaskoczony. Od czasu do czasu zastanawiam się jak długo to będzie trwać. Niestety boję się, że wielu z nich może już nigdy nie wrócić. Cała ta sytuacja przewraca naszą rzeczywistość do „góry nogami”. Wiem na pewno, że nigdy już nie będzie tak samo jak przedtem! W czasie niedzielnych nabożeństw od ponad miesiąca liczę naszych wiernych. Coraz częściej myślę też o redukcji jednej niedzielnej angielskiej Mszy Świętej w naszym kościele. Myślę także o przesunięciu hiszpańskiej Mszy z godz. 6:30 pm na wcześniejszą godzinę. Modlę się i proszę Ducha Świętego o pomoc w podjęciu najlepszej decyzji. Wiele parafii w naszej Diecezji Chicago przeżywa podobne problemy i też dokonuje pewnych praktycznych i rozsądnych korekt. Proszę was bardzo o wyrozumiałość, życzliwość modlitwę w tej intencji. „Jezu, ufam Tobie”!

SŁODKIE JARZMO I LEKKIE BRZEMIĘ? Jeśli mówimy, że sytuacja jest brzemienna w skutki, to znaczy, że poniesiemy ciężar konsekwencji podjętych decyzji. Ciężar to coś, co ciąży, obciąża. Zwykle szukamy sposobów, by zrzucić z siebie ciężar: życia, obowiązków, trudnych sytuacji i osób. Czy zatem jest możliwe, by ciężar, który proponuje Pan Jezus, był lekki? Czy nie jest to pusta obietnica, zwodna nadzieja? Jak rozumieć „słodkie jarzmo”, „lekkie brzemię”, o których mówi Zbawiciel? Mogą tej słodyczy doświadczyć chrześcijanie, którzy cierpią prześladowania. Te w wymiarze politycznym, ekonomicznym, społecznym. Ale także te po-legające na bezpośrednim zagrożeniu życia. Również nasze europejskie społeczeństwa zdają się dyskryminować, ośmieszać, odrzucać osoby jawnie deklarujące się jako uczniowie Chrystusa. Słodyczy ciężaru Jezusowego doświadczają wtedy ci, którzy wiernie trwają przy swoich poglądach. Uczniowie Chrystusa przeżywają w takich sytuacjach pozorną sprzeczność: cierpienie z powodu przemocy z zewnątrz i pocieszenie od Ducha Świętego w sercu. Tylko w tak ekstremalnych warunkach można głębiej zrozumieć słowa Pana: „Beze Mnie nic nie możecie uczynić” i „Gdzie jestem Ja, tam będzie i Mój sługa”. Nie mogą pojąć tego ci, którzy prześladują innych, bo Chrystus objawia tę słodycz swoim prostaczkom (Ewangelia) – tym, którzy są czystego serca… Warto wytrwać w wierze, wchodząc przez „ciasne drzwi”.
