In our busy lives it can be hard to remember all the little jobs, especially when it’s a once-in-a-decade task like renewing the photo on your driving licence. But overlooking this could cost you dearly. If you fail to update your photo licence before its expiry date, you could face a hefty fi ne of up to £1,000. Research

by Sainsbury’s Bank has revealed that more than 1.6 million drivers could be at risk of being fi ned as their photos have already expired. Need a holiday? According to new research from Sainsbury’s Travel Insurance, you’re not alone. It reveals that 28.9 million Brits are planning to escape the daily grind this year, spending a total of £22.1bn. While we’re eager to travel, we’re also eager to save money — the research shows that the majority of people intend to cut costs on holiday this year and spend less than last year. Holidaying in the UK, self-catering breaks,

staying with family or friends and camping all came up as cost-cutting ways to enjoy a budget-conscious break.

NEWS

Crumb’s the wordHome baking has been one of the big food trends in recent years — as well as the enjoyment derived from making (and eating) your own bread, cakes and biscuits, it’s also a rather tasty way to save a few pennies. The increasing popularity of TV bake-o shows, celebrity bakers and the seemingly unstoppable rise of the cupcake all suggest that this is one food trend that’s far from over. Sainsbury’s launch of its new baking website is a welcome addition to the ‘bake-o-sphere’. Filled with recipes, information and advice, it’s a ‘one-stop shop’ for bakers of all skill levels. So buying hard-working pieces that you’ll really want to wear and can dress up or down for all sorts of occasions, makes a lot of fashion sense. That’s one of the big selling points of the new collection of affordable fashion by Gok Wan for TU, exclusive to Sainsbury’s and due to launch in May. Saving has fallen out of fashion in Britain, but is it time to start putting those pennies away again? Esther Shaw reports

piggy bankThe return of the

Savers have had little to shout about for some time now, with interest rates

at an all-time low and infl ation running high. As a result, British households are currently saving much less of their income than other countries. A recent report found that we only save about 7% of our disposable income, compared with 10% in Germany and a whopping 47% in China.

Yet, with so much economic uncertainty, we can’t afford to give up on saving. And it’s not all bad news, because savings rates in the UK are slowly starting to increase.

‘Rates are still well below the highs of four years ago, but they have picked up over the past 12 months,’ says Andrew Hagger, from fi nancial comparison site moneynet.co.uk. ‘There’s never a bad time to start saving. By putting money aside regularly you’ll accumulate a lump sum and benefi t when rates do pick up.’

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO SAVE?Saving money, even if it’s only a small amount on a regular basis, can provide a vital buffer for emergencies, while also enabling you to plan for the future. As a rule of thumb, you should try to have the equivalent of at least three months’ income in savings, giving you something to fall back on if, say, your car breaks down or the washing machine packs up.

‘The reassurance of having a separate pot of funds can prove invaluable in times of fi nancial hardship or emergency,’ says Louise Holmes from the fi nancial website moneyfacts.co.uk. ‘Setting aside any residual cash as a cushion is a much more prudent way for people to budget, and avoids you having to rely on overdrafts and other costly forms of credit.’

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS OF SAVING?Saving can mean greater fi nancial security and increased fl exibility in budgeting and fi nancial planning. You can also reward yourself on special occasions, or work towards achieving longer-term goals.

‘Having a nest egg provides great peace of mind,’ says David Black from fi nancial information service Defaqto. ‘Equally, it P

could be that you’re saving for a particular reason – perhaps a

dream holiday, a new car, or even a wedding.’

If you’re looking to buy a new home, there are clear benefi ts to saving. ‘By saving for a reasonable deposit, the amount you’ll

need to borrow will be lower, bringing down future

mortgage costs,’ says Andrew Hagger. ‘A bigger deposit will also

mean you get access to better rates.’ Saving now can also help to cushion

any shortfalls in future pension pay-outs – which could become increasingly important as the prospects for both public and private pensions begins to unravel. ‘Longer-term saving can help you enjoy a more comfortable retirement,’ adds Hagger.

Crucially, when saving, you should bear in mind that there is little point earning a modest rate of interest on your hard-earned cash if you are paying a hefty rate on your credit and store cards at the same time.

HOW DO YOU MAKE SAVING MONEY A ROUTINE? The key to successful saving is to get into the habit of putting money aside on a regular basis at the earliest opportunity. A good way

signifi cant penalties. Savers may fi nd it useful to split funds between a fi xed-rate account and an easy access account.’

It’s also a good idea to keep an eye on the interest rates available between different accounts, as they change periodically. ‘By reviewing all of your savings accounts on a regular basis, you can ensure your money is not languishing in a poorly paying account,’ says Black. ‘If the rate has dropped, be prepared to move your money elsewhere.’

If you’re considering a new account, check whether there are any introductory offers, fees or penalties – after all, when it comes to saving, every penny counts.

to do this is to set up a regular standing order to transfer some cash to your savings account each month on the day after you get paid.

‘That way, the money goes out of your account without you noticing that you haven’t had the chance to spend it,’ says Black. ‘Meanwhile, your monthly savings will start to build up.’

You should also encourage your children to save from an early age, because the sooner saving is started, the more money they’ll have to help them with their fi rst car, home, or university costs. Get them to save some of their pocket money, or encourage them to save by promising to match their contribution on a pound-for-pound basis.

‘Many providers offer savings accounts designed specifi cally for children, plus parents and others can also now save into the new junior individual savings accounts (ISAs),’ says Holmes.

HOW DO YOU GET THE BEST RETURNS?As a saver, your starting point should be a Cash ISA. You can currently save £5,640 a year into one these accounts, and don’t have to pay tax on the interest earned.

Once you have used your ISA allowance, look to take advantage of the competitive rates on offer in the fi xed-rate bond market. These are accounts that involve you putting your money away for a fi xed length of time. On the plus side, they usually pay a higher rate of interest. ‘The highest rates tend to be for the longer-term bonds,’ says Black. ‘But make sure you only invest money that you know you won’t need for the entire fi xed term, because in many cases, early withdrawals are not permitted, or only with

Refresh your home with an instant makeover – and save

cash along the way. Kate Burt shows you how

HOME

There’s a reason we talk about spring cleaning. Along with daffodils, the new

season brings with it energy — and action. Suddenly, we want to do more than just think about how dingy the hallway or the front room looks. We’re motivated to do something about it.

Unfortunately, the gloomy economy is lacking a spring in its step, meaning that, for many of us, a big redecoration project is not realistic right now. Luckily, there are lots of clever ways to revamp every room in your home without going anywhere near a paintbrush. Here are seven insider tips for a makeover that won’t clean out your bank account.

DECLUTTER AND DEEP CLEANRooms feel remarkably refreshed after you’ve simply cleared daily debris from the shelves, pruned an overstuffed wardrobe, dealt with that pile of things that don’t really have a home, cleaned the windows, vacuumed and generally done a bit of domestic filing. It is the cheapest and most satisfying route to a revamp. You won’t need tips for the cleaning

Refresh your home with an

roomsChanging

part (just, perhaps, a nice cake by way of a motivational reward). Having a clear-out, however, can be easier said than done. ‘People often hang onto things out of guilt,’ says Romaine Lowery of clutterclinic.co.uk. ‘That £200 dress you’ve never worn, or the pasta-making machine you’ll never use…But think about it: why have the thing there reminding you?’ Not knowing what to do with chuck-outs is another barrier. Lowery suggests paying a junk collection service to make it easier. ‘As soon as you have decided to get rid of stuff, don’t leave it in bags hanging around the house: get it out of the door ASAP.’ AFFORDABLE ART Striking wall art will transform a space, but doesn’t need a big outlay. Buy a coffee-table book by a photographer you love – and a scalpel. Cut out your favourite images and display them in same-colour picture frames. Voila! An instant feature wall. As a fashionable (and budget) alternative to a frame, hang prints using two giant bulldog clips attached to the wall – perfect for a utilitarian look. For a quirky alternative to wall-hung plates, paste coloured paper doilies of different sizes to a plain wall and arrange artfully (use wallpaper paste or craft glue). ‘Mount boxes can

C2649 PP9-11 Homes amends.indd 15 03/04/2012 17:52

also be used to frame all manner of interesting items or collections,’ says Lucy Inskip of housedoctor.co.uk, the network

of professional home revampers. ‘Try pieces of china, interesting

hats, dolls or other collections,’ she adds. ‘And if you need a creative helping

hand, hire one of our House Doctors™, who’ll work with your budget, whether you’re selling or just updating.’

SWITCH UP THE LIGHTING Something as simple as altering your lighting can make a big difference. A brilliant quick fix is a string of fairy lights — perhaps bunched up in an unused fireplace or displayed in a glass vase in a corner on the floor. Always put safety first and make sure that you use LED fairy lights, which don’t get hot when they’re in use, and check that all wiring and plugs are in good condition before you start. A low-hung glow over a kitchen table or reading chair can look lovely — and doesn’t need to involve the expense and mess of an electrician chasing in wiring to move ceiling lamps. Instead, copy the current trend for extending cables (old-school

fabric ones look good) and simply hook lamps in a new position. A giant anglepoise-style lamp is another alternative to moving ceiling lights around — it’ll look great over a dining table.

GET SCENT-SATIONAL ‘I can’t be bothered to faff around with scented candles, but a spritz of room fragrance can instantly transform the atmosphere of a space,’ says Talib Choudhry, former deputy editor at Elle Decoration and now an interiors consultant. Another alternative is pot pourri. It has retro associations, but a modern update to the traditional bowlful on your coffee table – via the interior designer, Abigail Ahern — is to decant the pot pourri into tea-light holders and dot them around the house. Fresh flowers, of course, will not only add atmosphere-changing fragrance, but can transform a room visually, too. To literally double the impact, advises Lucy

Inskip, hang a large mirror and display the flowers in front of it. Or gather together a collection of

pretty smaller mirrors and hang them,

mismatched, together on a wall for a shabby chic effect.

Swapping around soft furnishings — even just moving them between rooms for a budget neutral revamp — instantly creates a different atmosphere. Try adding throws to sofas and armchairs, and replacing curtains, cushions, rugs or lampshades. You can do

the same all over the house, too. In the bathroom, change

your shower curtain, if you have one, for something totally different to your usual style. New towels and a bath mat will work wonders, too. If they’re in good enough nick, simply dye them — modern household dye comes in lots of great shades and you can use it to dye items in your washing machine without mess.

HOME

DIY-LITE If you are prepared to do a little bit of redecorating — without going so far as painting the whole room — there’s a lot you can transform. Best of all, you can do it using half-used pots of paint or odd rolls of wallpaper that might otherwise have gone to waste. Create a feature wall with a patchwork of tonally complementary wallpapers (get some free samples from your local DIY store and search ‘patchwork wallpaper’ online for inspiration). Update a piece of wooden furniture — one you already have, or something tired, yet well-proportioned, from a junk shop — with a strong shade of eggshell paint (you could even mix your own colour from leftovers in the attic, suggests Lucy Inskip) and new handles. ‘For a great fire surround,’ Lucy continues, ‘buy a low-cost MDF one and paint it with crackle glaze, which is cheap and quick.’ And for new lampshades, she adds: ‘Those cheap white paper globe lampshades that have been around since the 1970s can be easily customised. Spatter one with some watercolours, covering the whole ball — it looks surprisingly good.’

A few carefully selected and strategically placed accessories can make a big difference to the look of a room. In kitchens, displaying a co-ordinating set of tableware changes everything. Sainsbury’s vibrant Brights range is perfect for a spring lift and pieces cost from just £3 to £8. The range comes in four cheerful shades and includes everything from picnicware and oven gloves to storage canisters and utensils. You can buy it online and in selected stores now.

Rent-a-dRive l In some areas you can make £200 a month from renting your drive to car rental firms such as Zipcar (0333 240 9000; zipcar.com).

l List your space for free at parkatmyhouse.com. Check the going rate for your area on parklet.co.uk (0844 745 4977). A similar service is provided by yourparkingspace.co.uk and parkonmydrive.com.

l Get a contract drawn up that states you’re not responsible for vehicles and ensure your tenant is trustworthy. You may need planning permission – check with your local council.

1 GROW YOUR OWNThe most obvious money-making idea is to turn all that space into

a vegetable garden and grow your own. But why not grow more than you need personally and sell the produce? Spinach, strawberries, beans, courgettes and coriander are prolific. Do a deal to supply them to your local greengrocer or restaurant. Reasonably priced organic vegetables, in particular, are much in demand.

2 FlOWeR pOWeRPropagating bedding plants for gardening shops can be lucrative.

Or tap into the increasing demand for edible flowers, which are loved by health-food stores and upmarket restaurants. Dandelions, roses, violets, pansies and nasturtiums are the most sought-after varieties.

3 SeT Up A STAllFollow the example of allotment holders in

Bradninch, Devon, and set up a roadside stall. Every Saturday in the summer, they erect a table in the town square and sell vegetables, eggs and homemade jams and chutneys to locals and passers-by. Consider doing the same in your front yard.

4 GeT THe BUZZThe bee craze is buzzing and people

are making honey of fantastic quality in urban areas. Contact

the local branch of the British Beekeepers Association

(bbka.org.uk; 0247 669 6679) for training and advice, as well as cheap deals on buying equipment and a swarm.

5 ReNT UNUSeD SpACeWaiting lists for council allotments are getting longer and longer, so why not

rent out some of the spare space in your garden? Remember, having side-gate access is preferable to having strangers traipsing through your living room. Visit spareground.co.uk for advice on how to go about it, and to get help with finding tenants.

6 THROW A pARTYIf you have a

large garden, let it out for events. Parties for children are a good bet. You could even offer a complete package by doing the catering and

booking an entertainer. You’d be

expected to provide a marquee, tables, chairs, and a music system.

DiD You Know?Having trees in your garden

A road trip is the best way to enjoy the diversity of South Africa. Start in vibrant Cape Town, which blooms with ocean-front boutique hotels, before moving on to tour the Stellenbosch vineyards, where hotels give gourmet travellers exceptional value for money with innovative food-and-wine-pairing menus. Once you’ve had your fill, head to one of the region’s small safari parks, such as the Aquila Game Reserve.

How to get there: Travelbag (travelbag.co.uk; 0871 703 4698) offers fly-drives taking in Cape Town, the coast, the winelands and a game park, from £969 per person, including accommodation, car hire and flights via Doha.

When to go: Year round; their winter, June-September, is cooler, drier and arguably the best time for safaris.

Cyprus is a great spot for bagging a holiday bargain, with a huge selection of all-inclusive resorts offering travellers excellent value for money. This southern Mediterranean island offers more than just sun and sand. Inland in the south, there are leafy mountains, walking trails and small independent hotels, while the beaches of the north remain largely undeveloped, even offering the chance to spot marine turtles.

How to get there: Airtours (co-operativetravel.co.uk; 0844 225 4225) offers seven nights in Cyprus from £691 per person, staying all-inclusive at the four-star Ascos Coral Beach Hotel in Paphos.

When to go: Spring and autumn are best; July-August can be very hot and busy; winters are mild with scant rain.

With tropical beaches, verdant back-country canals, nature reserves, spice gardens, excellent cuisine and top-notch ayurvedic spas, there is nowhere quite like Kerala in India. And this friendly, part-Christian state has a unique ethnic mix that includes Malayali Indian, colonial European and Arab influences.

How to get there: To get some local flavour, try a trip with Village Ways (villageways.com; 01223 750049), the pioneering rural community-tourism organisation that now offers tours of Kerala, visiting small backwater villages on a houseboat run by local communities. From £632 per person, including two nights in the port city of Kochi and five nights in the backwaters, transfers and most meals. International flights cost extra.

The largest Commonwealth country is extremely diverse, from sub-Arctic regions such as the Yukon, to the Rockies in the west, with inland prairies and whale-rich waters. And don’t forget Atlantic Canada — Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Nova Scotia. The latter is the place to be this year for the Titanic memorial events (see the-titanic.com). The fated ship sank off the coast of Nova Scotia 100 years ago this April, and the capital, Halifax, played a crucial recovery role.

How to get there: Bridge & Wickers (bridgeandwickers.co.uk; 020 7483 6555) offers a two-week fly-drive from £2,580 per person, including flights, car hire and B&B accommodation.

When to go: Winters are coldest in the north of the country, while summer temperatures can reach the mid-30s in many provinces.

Trips to this little-known gem are often adventure- and wildlife-focused, taking travellers to stellar sites such as the stunning Kaieteur Falls, remote Amerindian communities, and on Amazon boat trips to see jaguars, harpy eagles, giant otters and spectacular displays of Victoria Amazonica water lilies.

How to get there: Wilderness Explorers (wilderness-explorers.com; 020 8417 1585) offers 14-day packages from £2,640 per person, all-inclusive. International flights cost extra. Trips are often combined with a beach stopover in nearby Trinidad and Tobago.

From 10-13 May, the Diamond Jubilee Pageant (diamond-jubilee-pageant.com) takes place in the grounds of Windsor Castle, with performances from all over the Commonwealth, the last of which will be attended by The Queen.

Balmoral: This estate, in the pine-forested hills of the Caledonian countryside, has been a Royal residence since 1848. Land Rover safaris are a popular way to tour the 50,000-acre grounds and surrounding Cairngorms National Park. Visit balmoralcastle.com for information.

18 Sainsbury’s Bank

Satnavs contain up to 6m bits of data, such as roundabouts, fuel stations, banks, ATMs and hospitals,

along, of course, with roads, so the challenge of keeping them 100% up to date is immense. In response to some high-profi le mishaps, the government convened a satnav summit, which aimed to bring all the interested parties – satnav producers, data providers, mobile phone companies, local councils and motoring groups – together to work out how best to utilise the potential of satnavs.

A trigger for the summit was a decision to devolve rulings on

Joined-up thinking is helping to make satnavs

more reliable and up to date, says Mark Rowe

how roads should be designated to local authorities. ‘Since the 1960s, if a council wanted to change the category of a road it had to come to central government for permission. Things should become more

integrated under this proposal,’ says a Department for Transport spokesperson. ‘The intention is to make the management of roads better and ensure everything is joined up.’ Such a move will require local council

road planners to liaise more swiftly with satnav providers to update

changes: for example, downgrading a highway from A- to B- road status.

The summit also addressed

how satnavs respond to live-time, changing conditions. ’After a crash on the M4, the Highways Agency diverts traffi c off the motorway,’ says Tim Shallcross, head of technical policy at the Institute of Advanced Motorists. ‘But a load of traffi c then gets dumped on a local town centre. We need a way for town planners to sit down with satnav companies and decide what diversions should be suggested when major roads get closed.’

Shallcross says future improvements in dynamic re-routing – routes changing as you drive along in response to live road conditions — will help solve many satnav problems. ‘But we need to have a consistency in technology, which means all the satnav and phone companies talking to each other,’ he says.

Good advice● Regularly update your satnav to ensure it has all the latest technical features.

● A satnav will often give you at least two choices of route to your destination. Look closely at these to decide which is the most appropriate for your vehicle.● Is there more than one place with the same name? When entering your destination, double-check you’ve got the right one.

● Don’t over-rely on the satnav. ‘Blindly following a satnav is a recipe for disaster,’ says the AA’s Paul Watters. ‘How people end up in rivers or stuck on bridges is beyond me. After all, you have a windscreen to see through, you have a foot on the accelerator, and you also have a brain.’● Always carry a physical road atlas as a back-up.

PETS

Sainsbury’s Bank 19

Travelling with pets made easierNow it’s even simpler to take your pet on holiday, reports Rhiannon Batten

R ecent changes to the rules governing quarantine and vaccination for animals coming into the UK from abroad are good

news for people who want to travel with their pet. While the Pet Passport scheme, introduced in 2000, made things easier, more recent changes mean that it should now be even cheaper and less time-consuming to take your pet on holiday.

Prior to the changes, anyone who wanted to travel with an animal and bring it back

into Britain needed to vaccinate their pet against rabies six months before re-entering the country, then have them undergo a blood test a month

later to ensure that the vaccine had worked. But on 1 January this year, the

rules were relaxed to bring the UK into line with European Union (EU) regulations. Now, animals need only be vaccinated 21 days before re-entering the country, and they don’t

need to undergo the later blood test. As long as your pet has its passport, it can come

and go with you much more easily within the EU. The new rules mean you’ll save money (the blood test was around £100) and you’ll no longer have to plan your travel months in advance. But if you’re taking your pet further afi eld, be warned that stricter rules apply for animals entering the UK from certain non-EU countries. Visit Defra’s Pet Travel Scheme (PETS) website at defra.gov.uk for advice about travelling with pets. P

BARK & RIDECaroline Kisko of the Kennel Club (thekennelclub.org.uk) offers advice on travelling with dogs

● Check restrictions on how and where your dog may travel with the ferry company or rail operator you’re using. Most ferry companies will not allow dogs on the decks.

● Transport your dog using a dog guard, dog crate or canine harness. It’ll feel more secure in its own space. Some countries insist that they wear canine seat belts or travel in a crate — check before you go.

● Ensure your dog has plenty of ventilation and shade in the car and that fresh drinking water is readily available. Make regular stops to exercise your dog.

● Keep your dog on a lead in all public places and make sure they’re sociable and obedient. The Kennel Club Good Citizen Dog Training Scheme can help.

● Make sure your dog wears an identification collar and tag with your contact details.
