Sailing to Byzantium
Drypoint image by artist and printmaker Shana James inspired by Conversations
with Ghosts concert with Paul Kelly
Sailing to Byzantium
The image is first scratched into the drypoint plate. Its just like drawing with a pointed tool. It is difficult to see unless the light is
just right.
Inking Up: when the drawing on the plate is finished, the plate is coated with ink using a squeegee
The ink is now carefully wiped off using the paper from a phone book
Ink is trapped in the scratched lines and wipes away from the surface of the plate
Bit by bit the image is revealed
The wiped back plate is now ready to be printed on a hand turned etching press
After being turned through the etching press the image from the plate has transferred to the paper.
