Well, well, well We moved to Tai Wan Village last July and noticed that there is a village well right on our doorstep. After talking to the indigenous villagers we found out that this spring well was one of three which used to be the only source

of water. The three wells were thought to have been built some time before the 1st World War.

One of the wells has disappeared. Another is now used as a fishing pond. The well on our doorstep still holds water and with the great effort of our neighbours who have lived here for over 20 years, has been properly preserved and beautifully landscaped with plants and flowers.

We are of the view that wells are features commonly found in the New Territories and some are even found in the urban areas. The well in Tai Wan Village is among one of them and based on information available, there is little potential that it would be accorded a grading in the assessment of heritage value. We are glad to know that the well concerned has been properly preserved by the villagers and such efforts are highly appreciated.

On our bikes Why are the bureaucrats in Sai Kung so fascist about the parking of bikes in and around the town centre? Cyclists who pedal in from home then take public transport to their place of work should be encouraged. They are doing more for the community and environment than the dozens of motorists who clog up the highways into the city everyday.

Sai Kung town centre should be car free with vehicular access granted only to service transport. How is it that in many ‘World’ cities great efforts are being made to reduce traffict, but here we simply build more roads.

Dog DazeI was surprised to read that Sai Kung police are planning to deploy drug sniffer dogs at the pier. (On Patrol, May issue). As a frequent visitor to the USA and Europe, my understanding is that the days of “Reefer Madness” are over. Medical research shows that recreational drugs are no more harmful - and usually less harmful - than alcohol. Popular culture and wikipedia are full of “role models” who seem no worse off for indulging in the odd “party drug”.

I am not proposing a debate about legalization. I am only suggesting Sai Kung get in step with the rest of the civilized world and relax a bit. As a parent, I know that teenagers will experiment. Is arresting them and landing them with a criminal record, which will follow them around for the rest of their life, really the best way of preparing them for adulthood?

Sniffer dogs are better placed at the airport not Sai Kung's laid back waterfront pier, especially when Mum and Dad are merrily, legally and quite rightly loading up their junk boats with boxes of vintage Sauvignon blanc. Sam Cheung

Local politicians, wake up. This is your big chance, to do something for the community which elected you. Stop private cars from coming into the centre of town. Create areas where people can walk and relax without worrying about getting hit by a car. Encourage visitors to park in Choi Hung or Hang Hau and use shuttle buses.

Come on - use your brains and make a name for yourselves. There is more to local governance than wearing large corsages and having your photographs taken. John Brennan

Dear editorHaving taken a tumble that landed me in Tseung Kwan O Hospital for three weeks, I can vouch for the community spirit that Mother-in-the-Middle wrote about last month (The Gate, May issue). Friends in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay have been fantastic in not only keeping me company, cheering me up and providing a non-stop flow of excellent home-cooked dinners, but also in looking after my abandoned family. It’s not just house prices that are through the roof. The rental price of marina berths has doubled in the past two years. And, like property, it’s mainland millionaires who are pushing prices up.

“What’s happening to the property market is happening to the boating market,” says Baggy Sartape of yacht broker Asia Boating, adding that berths have increased over 200% since 2008.

Berthing for a 50-foot yacht can now cost up to HK$17,200 a month, which is about the rental cost for a studio apartment in the Central district. But prospective yacht owners aren’t being deterred. When the Clear Water Bay Golf & Country Club was asked about the availability of berths at its marina, a representative said the waiting list was completely full and restricted to members only. At Hebe Haven Yacht Club Kit Yiu, PR and Marketing Executive, reports a 300 strong waiting list for just 53 berths.

This may be good news for boat clubs but Hong Kong’s overcrowded marinas are becoming

a large frustration for yacht builders and brokers who believe the market has much more room to grow. Before the global financial crisis, Mike Simpson, managing director of Simpson Marine said Hong Kong made up 65 percent of the brokerage’s Asia business; however, the lack of parking space has shrunk that share down to 10 to 15 percent.

“It’s been enormously frustrating turning down customers... some customers will never get a berth until a new marina is built,” Bart J. Kimman, managing director of Northrop and Johnson, told CNBC, adding that he too has been unsuccessful in locating a berth for his own personal use.

Without a concrete plan in place to address the lack of berthing space, yacht makers say Hong Kong is losing out on a lot of business to neighboring China, which is aggressively developing marina infrastructure across its coastline, as well as Singapore.

Illegal Structures? We’ve got’em. Several law makers have been exposed by the media for having illegal structures on homes in the New Territories. Chief among them is Environment Undersecretary, Kitty Poon Kit, who is now hastily removing two illegal balcony structures and a roof top greenhouse from her Tai Po home after being exposed by a Chinese tabloid newspaper.

Other law-breaking law-makers with illegal structures on their New Territory homes include Heung Yee Kuk, Vice Chairman Cheung Hok-ming, and Wong Yung-kan of the Democratic Alliance for the Betterment of Hong Kong.

Over the past decade more than 400,000 illegal structures have been demolished in Hong Kong’s urban areas, but little has been done about those in villages. According to the Secretary for Development, Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, there are simply too many illegal structures in rural areas. So in 2004 a policy of “rationalisation” was introduced which allows “toleration” of certain existing and safe structures.

A resounding boo-hiss for the landlord of New Song Christian Kindergarten, who is raising the rent by over $20k a month. The knock-on effect is a hike in school fees from $3,800 to $5,300 a month to cover costs. The only other option for the school is to close down until it finds alternative premises so any bright ideas for suitable sites are welcome. The Great HelmsmanNg Sze Fuk, Chairman of Sai Kung District Council

I am the sixth generation of a Sai Kung fishing family. I spent my childhood on the water. My family had a boat for commercial fishing and a boat for living on.

At six years old, I attended the Sai Kung Public School. It was thanks to Mr Ling Wang Yan, the headmaster of Sai Kung Public School at that time, that I got an education. I went to school during the day, and helped my parents work on our fishing boat at night. I was always exhausted, but I kept it up and eventually went to Sai Kung Sung Tsun Catholic School and later to high school in the city.

I moved from Sai Kung to the city in 1966 and started a garment business. Then in 1986, I moved back to Sai Kung and was appointed as a Member of the Sai Kung District Board. I currently live in Clearwater Bay.

Sai Kung is Hong Kong’s beautiful garden. This is our core vision of the district. The work of the district council is twofold: to improve living standards and protect the natural beauty of the area.

What I like most about Sai Kung is the people. Sai Kung is the melting pot of Chinese and Western culture, without any racial discrimination. Residents come from all over the world but they are united by a love of nature and pursuit of a relaxed lifestyle. There is a warmth and simplicity here that you don’t find in the city and everyone just seems to get along as a result.

The key challenge facing the Sai Kung district is transport infrastructure. Sai Kung is developing into a world acclaimed tourist destination. To meet rising tourism, we are going to have to improve Hiram’s Highway. There is no other option.

Sai Kung has so many beautiful places and scenic views. One of my favorite views is from the third East Course of Kau Sai Chau Public Golf Course, which overlooks Port Shelter. Its just so gorgeous. Another great view is from the waterfront by the old Beach Hotel Resort. You can see several of the islands from this vantage point and on a nice day it’s breath-taking.

We have a lot planned for Sai Kung over the next five years. Beautification projects are currently underway at Sai Kung and we are always brainstorming how to make Sai Kung a more beautiful garden city. We plan to make the old town a cultural zone with heritage walks and a range of shopping street activities. A dragon boat theme park will be built at Fuk Man Road. We also hope to upgrade and restore a number of old buildings to add interest and local flavour to the pedestrianised shopping precinct. In 5 years, we hope Sai Kung will have a large-scale indoor stadium, and a hotel to accommodate the increasing tourism.

I am proud that I helped make Sai Kung’s seafood world famous. The District Board launched the Sai Kung Seafood Festival in the 1990s, which was co-organised with the Hong Kong Tourist Association. Before launching the Sai Kung Seafood

Festival, Lei Yue Mun or Lamma Island were the only places people knew about.

I also worked hard to establish outdoor seating for the seafood restaurants in Sai Kung. I believe this has become a distinctive feature that has helped boost the local economy and also the tourism industry.

I would like to take this opportunity to appeal to all foreign friends living in Sai Kung to participate in the community and with the District

Council.

Stella is standing tallFamily says thanks

Things seem to be looking up for little Stella Sipma. The toddler from Sheung Sze Wan suffers from the rare tuberous sclerosis disease, which causes tumours to grow on her brain and other vital organs and consequently affects her physical and mental development. Stella recently underwent multiple brain surgeries in the United States but she has since returned to Hong Kong with her family.

According to her mother Alison, she is now like any other kid – getting out and about, enjoying play dates and even fighting with her older sister. Although the two-year old is still having daily seizures, they are affecting her far less than before the surgery. A phone consultation with her American doctors is scheduled for July to determine the next step in her treatment but in the meantime, as her brain heals, Stella is trying out various anti-seizure medications in the hope that one of them will control the remaining seizures and eliminate the need for additional operations. Her parents have also been in touch with a hospital in the U.S., which is running a clinical trial on an experimental drug called Everlomius.

“The goal of the trial is to see if the medication can reduce or stop seizures specific to Stella's disease,” says Alison Sipma. “We are waiting to see if there is still one more place for Stella in the trial. This clinical trial could provide a major breakthrough for tuberous sclerosis patients and we are very excited at the possibility of Stella being involved in this ground-breaking research.”

Thanks to an angel in the guise of a Sheung Sze Wan resident, Stella’s speech therapy is being paid for until the end of July and the family has been lucky enough to find a therapist who can come to their home three times a week. The family’s insurance company has agreed to pay for the little girl’s physical and occupational therapies for a period of time, and Sunshine House in Silverstrand has offered Stella a place in its nursery class this September.

“We are excited that Stella will finally be attending preschool and getting to play with more children her age,” says Alison.

Around 200 people attended a recent “Stella Thank-You Party” held on Sheung Sze Wan beach. A great family day out, there was pizza and drinks for everyone to enjoy, fun activities for the children as well as a bouncy castle courtesy of the Clearwater Bay Golf & Country Club.

“It was a wonderful way for the Stella Standing Tall community and the Sipmas to thank the community for all their generosity and goodwill toward Stella, and to celebrate raising over HK$1.1 million. Even better, it was also great for everyone to see Stella in action. She was bouncing on the bouncy castle, running around and trying to swim in the water, and just having a great time. I think it meant a lot for people to see her doing so well, and that they could be a part of helping Stella stand tall again," said Lynn Lawrence-Brown, one of three key organisers alongside Lisa Peterson and Sharyn Kitchener.

Why is Sai Kung a good dive spot in Hong Kong? D: While fish stocks have been decimated over the years, there is still a huge range of marine life in Sai Kung but it is generally smaller than it should be. Most of the good diving is to the east of Sai Kung and north of the Sai Kung Country Park. Even Sharp Island, a common dive site for training and only 15-20 minutes from Sai Kung Pier, has lots to see. Hong Kong is also a good place to learn to dive. Learning underwater navigation here rather than in clearer waters is far more challenging and a real test of your skills. [And if you qualify here] you don’t have to study while on holiday.

S: The water in Sai Kung is more oceanic and further from the Pearl River. It offers some beautiful sights, such as special rock formations and unique species of aquatic life.

C: Sai Kung has a lot to offer as a dive location. There are some nice areas with developing coral reefs and an interesting array of fish. The sites generally lack strong currents, which makes them perfect for a relaxing, stress-free dive.

What kind of marine creatures have you found in Sai Kung?D: We always see clown fish, sweetlips, groupers, goat fish, damson fish, moray eels, lizard fish, cuttlefish, pipe fish, nudibranchs, cardinal fish and many more. We occasionally glimpse octopus, lion fish and snake eels, and I recently spotted stingrays near Clearwater Bay. At Nine Pins, off the east coast of Clearwater Bay, there are huge anemone beds with some very aggressive clown fish. "Nemo" is by far the most hostile creature I have come across in Hong Kong but in fairness the fish are only defending their homes and young ones so they impress me the most for their bravery in facing off all comers.

S: Scientists have found 84 species of reef-building corals in Hong Kong, most of them in the Sai Kung area. We mainly see little invertebrates such as sea slugs, nudibranchs, octopus and crabs but occasionally we spot VIPs like marble rays, butterfly rays, eagle rays, turtles, frogfishes and seahorses. I saw an eagle ray once while teaching at Tsim Chau (尖洲) - that impressed me the most.

C: I am not a coral expert but I love the colourful, soft corals you get here. The marine creatures are generally juvenile or small fish but on several occasions I’ve seen stingrays, octopus and eels.

Tell us about your best diving experience at Sai Kung?D: Night diving is a favourite of mine. The marine life comes out at night and it is much easier to see things such as cuttlefish and octopus. As a dive instructor, my most memorable moments are generally when I help students overcome their fears and learn new skills.

S: On a reef check in Long Kei Wan, we found more than seven different species of nudibranches and sea slugs within the 100m transect area.

C: My best Sai Kung diving experience is split between Trio Island and Victor's Rock (just off Port Shelter). I love Trio Island for its underwater topography and lovely fish. I had an amazing experience at Victor’s Rock one Easter when the water was blue and clear down to 25m. I enjoyed the dive around the submerged rock surrounded by soft, colourful corals; I started deep and spiralled around the rock to the safety stop at 5m.

Nudibranch - The shell-less nudibrachs use their bright colouration as a defence mechanism, which warn predators that they are noxious or toxic.

Cardinalfish - Generally very small and colourful creatures, cardinlfish are nocturnal so spend their day in dark crevices in the reef or behind rocks.

Cuttlefish - Despite its name the cuttlefish is actually a mollusc, and most species can change their colour and texture, especially when they are threatened.

Seahorse - The seahorse prefers to live in sheltered areas such as coral reefs or seagrass beds where it can bob around and camouflage itself from predators.

Moray eel - The moray eel has a snake-like body and during the day usually hide in the crevices between rocks. It becomes more active and feeds at night.

Butterfly ray - The butterfly ray can be found in warmer waters and lays motionless most of the time under a thin covering of sand.

Clownfish - The clownfish is famous for its close relationship with sea anemone. The speical mucus on the skin keeps clownfish away from the stinging cells on the anemone.

Plastic bag - The plastic bag occasionally found floating in the waters of Sai Kung can be one of the most hazardous creatures of the sea!

How low can you go? Pete Gordon - who recently qualified as a technical diver - reflects on deep pleasures

It’s a distinctly odd feeling being 60 metres deep underwater. Sounds are muted but amplified and every breath and bubble echoes right through my head. Even breathing is different, inhaling over a hundred litres of gas a minute due to the pressure which makes everything feel sluggish. The sheer volume of water above us makes it gloomy enough that a torch is required to appreciate the colours and beauty of the coral and fish that call this other-world home.

I’m calm and alert, checking my gauges, intensely aware of my depth and gas reserves. The heavy twin tanks on my back and extra cylinders of decompression gases trailing on my left side, once so cumbersome on the surface, now feel gracious and elegant. To my right looms a huge boulder the size of a large house, one of a group of such monoliths we have come here to explore.

After what seems like an age, our twenty minutes of bottom time is over and it’s time to go. I signal to Steve and we start to ascend up to

27m, our first decompression stop. A further seven stops are required, switching to 50% oxygen at 21m and then 100% oxygen at 6m. This requires focus as switching to the wrong gas at the wrong depth can mean death.

So what was I doing down there? Why take these risks? Many reasons I suppose. To experience new and different environments; to see all of the wonders our diverse planet has to offer; to access a world of dive sites that lie beyond the limits of recreational diving. Or perhaps it’s simply to push the limits, to see how far I can go. It’s a buzz.

This month I’m taking you through the neighbourhood bustle of Sai Kung out into it’s green surroundings. I’m starting at the Golden Chicken, a favourite eatery in Noodle Alley. From there, Fergus the dog and I walk out and turn left where I always say hi to my friend at the veggie stand by the Post Office. Then past Harrods and on to the Tin Hau Temple.

Going past convivial night-time haunt, the River Thai Restaurant – we plunge into the Old Town. The mixed bag of shops lining the narrow alleys are an indication of the changing retail nature of this area. We

emerge blinking at the ever expanding seafood restaurant in the big red building by the harbour.

We stroll along Chui Tong Road, marveling at how many vessels can be moored in so little water and then turn left toward Tui Min Hoi village. Here I admire the al fresco lifestyle of the families with their dining tables and barbeques out front. After just one minute’s walk, by the big tin marine workshop, we take the right fork up the hill. Not to the church, but working our way up through the government housing.

We meet the road and turn right onto Hong Kin Road before working our way up through another housing estate, Tui Min Hoi Chuen. At the top we veer left. The lap sap bins mark the boundary where civilization ends and nature begins. We are going in the general direction of Trio Beach. The track narrows and rises up to the top of a gentle mound. There I look back and see the most lovely view of the busy sampans in Port Shelter. To the right there’s a track that veers off through beautiful mature woodland to those lucky residents of Tsiu Hang, but we press on towards Ma Nam Wat and soon see the yachts on their moorings in Pak Sha Wan. At the next sign post we continue towards Ma Nam Wat but only a minute later we take the left fork to Tai Ngam Hau.

We press on straight ahead now, aiming for the rugged headland of Pak Ma Tsui. The track narrows and the bush closes in. There are only occasional but very pretty glimpses of the harbour to our left. In the rainy season, a mass choir of cicadas sings in competition with the boisterous bull frogs. The track the deep is sweetened by the scent of jasmine along almost its entire length.

Finally we drop down to the rocks for an uninterrupted view to the Nine Pins and out to sea. There’s been no one else on the trail the entire way. Unbelievable!

To return we can either turn back to Trio Beach and get a sampan to Pak Sha Wan pier, or re-trace our steps with a possible detour through the Lions Nature Education Park.

Interview: Catherine CheungInterior designer and XSS founder Catherine Cheung talks about beginnings, inspirations and what the future holds.

How did you begin your career as an interior designer?I actually studied architecture in New York and came back to Hong Kong in 2000. I worked as an architect for two years but found I didn’t have the creative freedom I wanted so I switched to interior design in 2003. How would you describe your style?I tend to focus on form and space. I like clean lines and a more minilistic approach. Ultimately though, it all depends on what the client wants.

What were the projects that won two awards in The Asia Pacific Property Awards 2011?The Starlit Learning Centre and No.6 Members Village of Chung Shan Hot Spring Golf Club. Both projects were about connectivity and creating a smooth transition from one room or space to another.

Is Hong Kong a good place to work?Yes. In Hong Kong, spaces are smaller so utilising every inch of available space to its maximum potential is a huge challenge. As a result, maximising space is something that every client wants so the demand for interior designers is quite high. What was a project you particularly enjoyed?I once had 2000 sq ft. space and clients who wanted something really natural, modern and organic. They were also very environmentally conscious, and didn’t want to waste the previous design. Throughout the process, I invested a lot of time into working closely with the construction workers to get the look just right. So that experience was very memorable. What was your most challenging project?The Starlit Learning Centre was quite challenging. It was a narrow space with a big pillar in the middle, which struck me as a bit of an obstacle when I first walked in. I worked

around this by making the pillar a focal point of the design.

How do you balance work and your own lifestyle?I travel a lot, I love to travel. Hong Kong is very hectic, so travelling allows me time to be quiet and relax. I love to get out and look at the architecture and design of the places I go to. I find this influences and inspires me a lot. What’s in the future for you?Right now I’m working on a really interesting project in Stanley. The house is situated on a slope, and I’ve doubled the 2000-something sq ft. space by adding an extension. It’s for a young family of four, so how I arrange the space for each member of the family is going to be a big challenge.

We’re nearly at the end of the year for the majority of schools and the long summer holiday is on the horizon for many. But while it is lovely having the children around with no routine and no activities, seven weeks is a long old time to keep them occupied particularly if both parents work. There are only so many trips to the pool or beach you can do and even little ones need a change of scene. Luckily, help is at hand in the form of our local kindergartens, who have come up with a wealth of summer programs for the under sixes to prevent cabin fever from striking this summer.

Not all all! Your breasts are engorged which - for baby - means they’re bursting with the good stuff! According to Virginia Newhouse, of Koru Postnatal Care the best thing you can do is continue feeding. “Don't skip feeds or limit feeding time,” she says. “You need to remove as much milk as possible at every feed." Try expressing some milk in a warm shower prior to feeding to make it easier for your baby to latch on for a full feed. You can also use breast pumps to express the leftovers. To reduce swelling, cold works wonders; be it cabbage, compresses or even a can of coke. In a few days, your body will supply just the right amount of milk for your baby and feeding will be easier.

Over the past editions of Sai Kung magazine I’ve introduced you to some of the characters who populate my world, like Fashion Mum, Sporty Mum and Hot Dad (we miss you). I’m sure you have recognized the types if you spend any time at a school gate. Well, this month I’d like you to meet a new mother - Mum-at-Sea…me.

I’ll be 45 this July and I’m filled with an overwhelming urge to take stock. It’s a compulsion to regain a sense of purpose. The children don’t need me in the same intensive way and I am liberated from the apron strings. Recent family events with the so sad death of my nephew have helped spur me to contemplate the ‘what next’. I don’t want to talk in clichés but life is there to be taken and I feel like I’m just sitting in the stands - not playing on the pitch.

Suspended in the middle of the Easter break, my husband and I went to the UK for my nephew’s woodland burial, which was quite beautiful - and even more achingly wrong for being so beautiful. I returned full pelt into a project, which did the trick distracting my thoughts … but now that’s over I am back in the doldrums. I am a woman from the generation led to believe there was nothing we couldn’t achieve. I need to rediscover that woman.

It was for a show about pneumatically-enhanced cosmetically-corroded unnatural blondes married to old has-been pop stars of the worst soft rock variety. One clip showed a blonde in a bikini being chastised by her rocker for decorating the tour bus with Hello Kitty tat. Was this what the entire feminist movement and the fight for equal rights has been leading to? Thankfully my daughter shared my opinion on the blondes. She could have gone the other way—after all fame comes cheaply nowadays. I feel sorry for her generation who think aspiring to celebrity is a career choice.

Something is out of kilter. It’s time I took the lead and set an example

to the children by applying myself to a new project. I may not necessarily become a lawyer

or a banker (I can hear the current husband laughing) – all I’m looking for is

the chance to prove I have value.Now there is a danger here by stating my intentions out

loud. It means there is more pressure to follow through. But so far this has been a year of entering new territories, finding new challenges and coping with new emotions. I’m in with a chance.

I’ll be taking a break from this column over the summer to have a think. Goodness knows what September will bring, but watch this space.

Muay Thai BoxingHeidi Yeung steps into the ring

The man is a head taller than me, well-muscled and more than capable of kicking my butt all over the ring. When my punches fail, I move forward to deliver the classic knee-to-groin. Now, that’s what I call stress relief.

Muay Thai - an aggressive combat sport originating from Thailand - is making its mark in Hong Kong gyms. Seasons Fitness has adapted this physical contact sport into the ideal exercise for releasing the tension and pressure of the day. With tension and pressure a part of this city’s daily grind, its not hard to see why Muay Thai is gaining popularity.

Muay Thai means “Art of Eight Limbs”, referring to the punches, kicks, elbows and knee strikes that form the eight points of contact. Kit Leung, a personal instructor at Seasons Fitness who represented Hong Kong in the Macau Invitation Competition and won, stresses that Muay Thai is not a violent sport.

Kit says he teaches Muay Thai for the love of it. With its endless variations and challenges, the sport is anything but dull. “It’s definitely not boring,” says Kit, “it’s not like running on a treadmill.” Its difficulty can also be tailored for each student, with or without previous experience. With this in mind I thought I would give it a go.

The boxing ring at Seasons Fitness is tucked near the windows, with a matted corner and hanging punching bag at its side. When Kit arrives, he introduces himself in a distinctly British accent. We move to the matted area, where Kit proceeds to wrap bright pink tape snugly around my hands and wrists.

and taught simple jabs, punches, kicks and blocks. Increasingly complex combinations are created to intensify the work out, and each strike that I land makes a noise that sounds quite impressive.

During our short two-minute breaks, in between sets, Kit tells me about his time teaching boxing in the U.K., before moving to Thailand for a year to study Muay Thai. He says his clients are mostly women, and the need to de-stress is the main reason his students come to him for a work out.

Kit then suggests an easy-going sparring lesson. Despite my lagging pace and force, Kit calls encouragements and kindly offers impressed remarks, which I feel certain are disproportionate to the skills I’m displaying.

Kit ends the session with a whirlwind of everything he taught me in the past hour, increasing the speed of each combination until it feels like a flurry of strikes and blocks. After thanking Kit, I stagger back to the changing rooms and gratefully stand under a long hot shower trying recover. Although exhausted, I get dressed and leave Seasons Fitness feeling invigorated and ready to face the world.

24-hours later my stomach muscles are still protesting every time I stretch or laugh. Who knew almost non-existent abs could hurt so much! Despite the sore muscles, I might just book myself another session. Practice makes perfect as they say.

family when they return to the UK.So why is moving your pet overseas so expensive? One of the reasons

is the veritable mountain of paperwork involved. If this sound ominous then I recommend using a pet relocation expert that is a member of the International Pet and Animal Travel Association (IPATA).

If you do feel brave enough to do it yourself, then here are some general guidelines.The early pet catches the flight – As soon as you know you are relocating, check with the authorities at your destination to find out the regulations. It often takes 6 months or longer before your pet is eligible to fly.Choose your airline carefully – The ideal situation is your pet travelling on the same flight as you, directly to your destination. Very few airlines allow pets to travel in the cabin with you, no matter how small and well behaved they are, but rest assured that they are ‘priority cargo’ and the hold is pressurised and temperature controlled.Think inside the box – Your airline will give you specific dimensions and requirements for the pet carrier. As soon as you have these, get the carrier and encourage your pet to spend time inside it before they travel. Also make sure it is securely fastened before flying so there is no chance of him escaping.Say No to Drugs – Sedatives might make pets easier to load, but imagine the panic of them waking up mid-flight? Sedatives can also cause problems with breathing and blood pressure, so should be avoided.Did you order a pet meal? – Things in transit may shift, so unless you want to greet a pet smelling of fancy feast or poop, avoid putting food in the crate. Apart from his blanket, the only other essential is a frozen block of water, inside his water bowl, which should be attached to the carrier.


The snipLiz Remington delivers the kindest cut

A quiet hush has come over the garden. The plants are holding their breathe. If you could hear them talk, they would be whispering about the secateurs I am brandishing in my left hand. I feel an itch to prune and, knowing my track record, its going to be brutal.

I used to think that pruning should be like topiary. There’s me, in a big floppy hat, artistically trimming and snipping and creating wonderful shapes in the greenery. The reality is more of a fight. Woman versus nature. The Day of the Triffids Part II. It’s not art... It’s a massacre.

A recent tussle with a climber left me scarred. It scratched my arm. Drew blood. I fought back. One thing led to another, and the plant was reduced to a stump. I think there must be a secret art to successful pruning. As much as I prefer a wild and untamed look to a garden, I’ve this nagging feeling that some plants need a bit of a snip to encourage better growth.

First to my pride and joy - the lemon tree. According to Pedro from KK Horticulture, if you’re going to prune wait for a time you don’t see any flowers. If you are on mission for a major prune, he recommends you make the cut (ouch) about half the height of the tree. If your tree is in a pot, post surgery recovery should be in a sunny spot. Spray the stems and trunk everyday to keep the cut part moist. Expect new shoots from the cut after about a month – followed by flowers.

As for those unruly climbers, Pedro suggests letting them get on with

climbing and use the new growth to your advantage. The tendrils are very malleable. I will go back to him about my Thumbergia which was lovely until it went rotten. I cut it right back and now it is attempting to strangle the Frangipani. My Jasmine is also out of control – and pruning this will depend on its’ flowering season. A simple commonsense pruning

rule is never prune before the flowering season. Hong Kong Jasmine normally flowers in the summer so hands off

until the autumn. Osmanthus is the other way round.My final pruning conundrum was what to do

about the Irises. A few weeks ago the garden burst into delicate white flowers with an intense purple inside – glorious. But they don’t last long and post flowering we are left with bundles of long green leaves. Not very exciting. I’ve learnt from Pedro not to prune the Iris as they sprout from bulbs. Rather separate baby Irises from the mother (not for the fainthearted) and

find an empty space that needs filling. Or if you are thinking of pruning do it the Hong

Kong Government way – and chop everything above the soil ! Regrowth takes three months. I

feel ready for action. Just don’t tell my plants ….If you have any gardening tips or question, please

Home security is one of the key issues in concept of crime prevention and should be a hot topic in all Sai Kung residencies.

To enhance home security in Sai Kung areas, effective property management and security installation are very important. A safe home starts with access control. By this we mean making sure that doors and windows are of good quality, have good locks and that a member of the family is responsible for making sure that windows and doors are locked when no one is home and also at night when the family is sleeping. Individuals can also enhance their home security by means of good perimeter fencing which can provide deterrent effect or the use of barbed wire as well as anti-climb spikes to exposed drainage pipes and ledge toe-holds at lower floor to stop the burglars.

For village houses, it is often necessary to have the ‘Intruder Alarm System’ and lighting. In sum, self-

alertness and a little common sense is the key. Remember to lock the doors and shut the windows before leaving your home. Good ‘Neighbourhood Crime Prevention’ (NCP) will also reduce crime.
