Wacky RacesAfter another day risking my

life on the roads of Hong Kong and wearing out my horn, I thought it my duty to categorise the types of drivers that terrorize the streets – perhaps I should say ‘road-users’ as ‘driver’ suggests a level of competence.

Firstly, we have the Penelope Pitstops: these are the people who, whilst coasting around the outside lane of a roundabout, cut across your exit, totally oblivious to what lane they’re supposed to be in. And, like Penelope, many drivers avoid facing the mayhem they have caused by clogging up their back windows with teddy bears and other pre-pubescent, ‘’Hello-Kitty’’ paraphernalia.

My favourite, however,

are the Gruesome Twosomes, who hide all sorts behind the curtains of their people-wagons. The special skills of the Gruesome Twosome include taking 10 minutes to park in shopping centres, because the whole extended family experiences a ghoulish delight in reversing in geological time. If there’s a tight spot to edge into, and a whole line of cars waiting to get past, you can guarantee that Gruesome and his pack will be there.

Next we meet the Peter Perfects who, with a thunderclap and a screech, park up in their Turbo Terrifics. These are the racers with nowhere to

Dear Sir,I read your heart-rending article regarding lack of

marina space in Hong Kong. It is so sad to hear that the yacht builders and marine brokers cannot sell enough their overpriced products due to a shortage of parking spaces. The solution, they state, is to build more marinas. What a great idea ! Bigger and better concrete monoliths, more of our shoreline sanitized, spoilt and made into exclusion zones reminiscent of Guantanamo. Large numbers of the tax-paying public are denied access to the sea simply because they are not members of select yacht and boat clubs. Marina Cove and Clearwater Bay Golf and Country Club are two prime examples of large areas of coastline out of public reach. They are

The majority of marinas are ecological nightmares, destroying the natural shoreline and replacing it with ill-designed eyesores surrounded by security fences. They increase the potential for pollution, should effluent, cleaning chemicals, oil and rubbish be discharged into the sea.

No facilities for launching are made for public boat owners and so these place become the reserve of the rich.

we’ve just learned that it’s a shiny new furniture shop, brought to you by the owner of antiques store Euro Casa in Sai Kung Town. The new store, dubbed Chez Uno, will restore antique Chinese furniture as well as source and sell tasteful, hand-picked replicas from China. Speaking to the owner, she hopes more of the Chinese community will take an interest in these pieces, which she feels is an important part of Chinese culture and heritage. nature walk enthusiasts will be happy to know that David Diskin has released his book Hong Kong Nature Walks: The New Territories. A true labor

of love, the guide offers thorough overviews of 21 diverse nature walks in the New Territories. Down to the different species of birds, plants and insect species found in particular areas, not a single detail is overlooked. With plenty of pictures, maps and intriguing tidbits, Hong Kong Nature Walks: The New Territories is a hiking bag essential.

Just in time for summer, the FEHD are sprucing up the waterfront. They’re placing more bins along the seafront promenade to tackle the problem of current bins constantly overflowing on busy days. They will also be sending in the troops every Monday to clean up the beaches at Sha Ha and Tai Wan. Any volunteers are more than welcome to join in this effort to create a better environment.

A large part of the expat community in Sai Kung originally come from other western language

speaking backgrounds, particularly German and French. The lack of opportunity for some children to practise and develop their native language in Hong Kong has long been a concern. Such concerns has brought several German parents together and a German speaking playgroup or kindergarten in Sai Kung may be in the works. It’s not just cell phones that drop out in the sticks, it seems DTT (Digital Terrestrial television) reception is also denied to many residents living in rural areas and, understandably, they’re not happy about it. However, no TV no cry. The issue has been brought up to Acting Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, Mr Gregory So, who assures that this is being looked into and help is on the way.

Alfred Cheung Kin-tingWith more than 80 movies under his belt, movie director Alfred Cheung is a legend in his own right.

I think Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay are the most beautiful places in Hong Kong. I always find good filming locations there. One time I drove uphill behind the previous Beach Resort Hotel, when I got a bird's-eye view, I found a view that was so gorgeous it was comparable to Switzerland.

This place really inspires me. I produced and directed the Chinese political satire movie “Her Fatal Ways” around this area which was very popular and won a lot of awards. I have filmed a couple of movies out in Sai Kung and Clearwater Bay.

I tell people not to bother going to Thailand. If you want to go to the beach, if you want to feel refreshed, if you just want to be around nature or go sailing - go to Sai Kung. You can do all of those things there.

One of my favorite restaurants in Sai Kung is Tung Kee, I have been going there for a long time and still go there often.

Sai Kung is home to a number of yacht clubs and I have a yacht in a club at Ma Nam Wat. I like sailing, one day I hope to have a Chinese Junk. A friend of mine had one, he parked it and lived on it for three

years, I really admired that. I always tell my wife that we are going to spend our retirement pottering around in our boat.

Clearwater Bay is my second hometown. I grew up in Tsim Sha Tsui. It wasn’t until 1985 that I moved to Clearwater Bay. I don’t think it has changed much since then, except for Tseung Kwan O, that is now totally different.

One good piece of advice I was given, was to preserve and reserve nature. Keep it as it is. I don't agree with big construction, like mega mansions. Keep it a humble, sort of Spanish style. Don't overdevelop.

Right now I am working on several film scripts and one mainland Chinese soap opera. One of the films is about football and the Chinese soap opera is called “My Youth in Hong Kong”. I am the producer and director, my niece Ng Wing-Ki is the screenwriter. We plan to start shooting in November this year.

I think my greatest achievement is becoming a good family CEO. The secret is so simple: Love. Love your wife or husband, love your children & family members..

treated successfully by the AFCD and SKBW volunteers treated and are now on their way to full recovery.

SKBW has put together a team of “herdsmen”, trained by the SPCA in ways to approach and handle cattle, who can be called out at any time. And look out for new leaflets produced by the AFCD with information on how to behave around cattle and who to call if assistance is needed.

Have you Herd? With double the numbers of feral cows in Sai Kung, Carol Biddell reports on local initiatives to police the herd.

Sai Kung’s herd of feral cows has almost doubled in size. It’s a bovine baby boom that has led the herd to regularly

wander through Sai Kung town in search of

new pastures. Now local environmental group Sai Kung

Buffalo Watch (SKBW) has teamed up with the government to relocate some of cattle to the country park.

Two bulls, nicknamed Charlie & Brownie, can be seen every evening walking along Tai Mong Tsai Road, crossing from Sha Kok Mei towards Sai Kung police station at 6pm like clockwork.

Last month, members of SKBW took part in their first joint relocation operation with the Agriculture, Fisheries & Conservation Department (AFCD). Two cows, one calf and two bulls were caught – Brownie was cornered but escaped at the last minute. The captured cattle were taken to the AFCD centre in Sheung Shui to be de-sexed and tagged then released into the country park about 10 days later.

Sadly, Charlie was not so lucky. The bull was found at Dai Chung Hau, with a small injury that had become infected with flystrike and screwworm. Screwworm is fairly common in Sai Kung but if not treated quickly, the animal’s condition can deteriorate rapidly. Unfortunately for Charlie, the infestation was too severe and he was euthanized by the AFCD vet.

However, another four injured cows have been

Best Restaurant Hebe One O One - 112 Pak Sha Wan, 2335 5515, www.hebe101.com: It takes more than good food to earn a Best Restaurant award. Ambience, service and decor each play their part, and Hebe One O One works hard to make sure it ticks all the boxes.

Having one of the most attractive restaurant buildings in Sai Kung certainly helps. The peaches-and-cream Mediterranean-style building stands out from the crowd, setting the vibe for a venue that squeezes a lot of variation into its three floors: casual drinking and dining in the ground-floor bar, more formal dining in the upstairs restaurant, and a popular alfresco roof terrace with stunning sea views.

Friendly staff, a constantly updated menu and regular “specials” - golf days, darts competitions, weekend roasts, cracking quiz nights, and fun parties - give customers plenty of reasons to keep coming back. And then there’s the food. Your favourites?

“Chef Steve and the boys in the kitchen do an excellent job ensuring a consistently high-quality product,” Wrayton says. “We have dining areas to suit every taste.”

Wrayton and a friend started Hebe One O One (named for the 101 minibus route on which it sits) with a dream of restaurant stardom and a love for the unique building, which manages to be the perfect place for everything from watching the match to marriage proposals.

“I guess we get five or six proposals a year,” Wrayton says. “[After one woman] said yes, they moved up to roof for the wedding ceremony. Talk about getting it all!”

It’s Oscar time in Sai Kung & Clearwater Bay. After spending countless hours going through hundreds of votes, praises, rants and raves, here are you winners....

Best DessertHoneymoon Dessert - 10A-C Po Tung Road, 2792 4991, www.honeymoon-dessert.com: It seems the honeymoon is never over when it comes to this Hong Kong favourite, a Sai Kung original. Since the first restaurant opened on Po Tung Road in 1995, Fornia Chow’s dessert depot has spread thoughout Hong Kong, mainland China and Southeast Asia. What fuels this expansion, and keeps Sai Kung residents coming back for more? Not only does Honeymoon Dessert offer the widest selection of sweet treats in town, but the menu is constantly changing and expanding. It seems impossible to walk into Honeymoon Dessert without noticing something different for sale.

Best BarAguaplus - 72 Po Tung Road, Sai Kung, 2791 2030: The biggest bar in Sai Kung is a busy place. Most nights it resounds to balls clipping in a game of pool, the roar of a football game on the big screen, and the clinks of sparkling glasses as friends raise a toast. Built from the ashes of the once-popular Extreme, the current owners saw an opportunity to create a place where friends can meet for a drink – in the bar, the lounge-dining room or on the terrace – and a meal. Now the people have spoken and it seems their vision is a great success. Oh, and don’t forget to pop down on a Wednesday night when you can get a burger and pint for just $88.

Best New RestaurantClassified - 5 Sha Tsui Path, 2529 3454, www.classifiedfoodshops.com.hk: Newcomer Classified got your vote for its unpretentious, casual European food and its modern-rustic alfresco decor. Platters of superb artisan cheeses, premium charcuterie and homemade bread, plus an extensive wine list with more than 100 labels to choose from, make this the perfect place for a lazy brunch. Starting in Sheung Wan in 2006, Classified now has six neighbourhood cafes across Hong Kong, crossing the harbour for the first time with the Sai Kung branch. Look for wine tastings run by sommelier Kavita Faiella every first and third Sunday from 4pm-6pm, and a 50 per cent discount on pizzas from Monday to Thursday, after 6pm.

Most Child Friendly Restaurant Jaspa's - 13 Sha Tsui Path, Sai Kung, 2792 6388: The Jaspas experience doesn’t come with an age requirement. From the colourful logo to the cups of crayons for drawing on the paper

tablecloths, this Sai Kung institution could have invented the “family-friendly” concept. Not only is it located within view – and tricycle

distance – of the Man Yee Playground, but Jaspas also offers an excellent children’s menu with mummy-pleasing healthy options. Plus it has some of the friendliest staff in town, led by manager Sing, father of six, and winner of our Best Waiter award for two years running.

Best Cup of CoffeeWhite Black Caffe - 62 Po Tung Road, Sai Kung, 3113 6088: Little things make a big difference are words to live by at White Black Caffe. It’s a philosophy that put it so far ahead in the voting that we eventually stopped counting. When we asked barista Raymond for the secret to his popular coffees, he revealed that White Black uses ice cubes made from

frozen coffee, not plain old water, for its iced brews. And as for its popular rose latte, it is made with rosewater made from real roses, not syrup. In a world ruled by packaged foods and mystery meat, people like Raymond and his team at White Black Caffe, who put love into every refreshment, are a wonderful surprise.

Best BaguetteMushroom Bakery - 26 yi Chun Street, 2792 6866: This unpretentious little bakery doesn’t look like much, but it sure smells good. The drool-worthy aromas of freshly baked bread, pastries, cakes and even honey-baked ham waft enticingly along Yi Chun Street, drawing customers through the sliding door. The girls who hold down the fort are popular with readers such as Eva Chui Loiterton, who told us Mushroom Bakery gets her vote because “Alice always has a smile”. Fresh warm bread served with a smile? I’ll take two.

Best Place to Take VisitorsThe Waterfront: Part of the appeal of Sai Kung has always been its laid-back, fishing village ambience. And nowhere is this more evident than on the waterfront. A stroll along the seafront promenade takes visitors past some of the best and most interesting parts of Sai Kung, from the watersports and alfresco dim sum of Sha Ha Beach to the traditional fishing village of Tui Min Hoi. Along the way, you’re likely to encounter slightly mad dog lovers with pooches in frocks or prams, allotment gardeners, a weekend market, feral cows, black kites, golfers, sampan ladies, junk trippers, fishermen selling their catch fresh from the boat, a patchwork of seafood tanks and alfresco restaurants, dodgy statuary, boatyards and boats of all descriptions – posh, practical and some that should frankly be condemned. And all against the beautiful backdrop of the islands of Inner Port Shelter. Pull up a chair at the famous Cheung Kee Seafood Restaurant and enjoy the parade.

Best Hotel For Guests Hyatt Regency Sha Tin: When Boracay is too far, or the day is simply tough, many of Sai Kung’s residents look no further than the oasis of Hyatt Regency Sha Tin. Proving that you don’t have to go downtown to get five-star treatment, the Hyatt Regency has something for everyone, from seeing dinner turn into a theatrical experience at the hotel’s Dongguan and Northern Chinese cuisine-inspired restaurant, Sha Tin 18, to enjoying a relaxing afternoon at Melo Spa (which also offers competitive massage packages for children). And for those night-owls unwilling to make the trip to Lan Kwai Fong, there’s always the Tin Tin Bar.

People of the year Stella Sipma: A year ago, three-year-old Stella Sipma was relatively unknown outside her home village in Clearwater Bay. The toddler suffered from tuberous sclerosis, which caused tumours to grow in her brain, affecting her ability to walk and talk, and leading to frequent seizures. The condition could be improved by surgery, but it was available only in the United States.

Touched by her situation, a group of mums got talking over a Friday night foot massage, and sowed the seed that blossomed into the Stella Standing Tall (SST) campaign, now familiar throughout Hong Kong.

“After hearing updates on Stella, how frightening and overwhelming it all seemed, we wanted to help and decided to get involved,” says Lisa Peterson, one of the campaign’s three co-organisers, along with Sharyn Kitchener and Lynn Lawrence-Brown. “We brainstormed many ideas but quickly realised we needed to appeal to different communities and groups.”

So they organised fundraising events such as a family walk in Clearwater Bay, a cocktail party in Central and a family

Biggest waste of spaceStar Plaza issue: In a perfect world, Star Plaza – one of the largest and, according to our readers, most useless buildings in the area – would be a boon for Sai Kung. The 25,000 sqm building could hold a dozen more shops; its 300-something parking spaces could be an ideal park-and-ride opportunity; the elephant-sized air conditioning units could provide a refreshing breeze on hot summer days. But we don’t live in a perfect world. And that is why we have Star Plaza.

Empty apart from a few trucks, the building stands on the main route into Sai Kung town like an ominous green watchdog. Built in 2001 by the Australia-based Kilberg

Group for a reported $200 million, it has only ever had one tenant, Wellcome, which left quicker than you could say “bad investment decision”. Although the building was sold in 2003 to local outfit Urban Entertainment Management, the new owner has been similarly unsuccessful.

But could there be a spark of life on the horizon? According to a June 22 posting on Jobs DB, Urban Entertainment is currently planning an “entertainment destination” of eight restaurants,

a 12-lane bowling alley, a sports bar as well as a cocktail lounge. We may all be using Star Plaza yet.

yoga session, 101 Sun Salutations, run by Julie Dixon at the Clearwater Bay Country Club.

News of the campaign spread by word of mouth, until the story appeared in the press. Then, Peterson says they were inundated with offers of physical and financial support. “Never in a million years did we envisage the campaign becoming as big as it did, It quickly surpassed anything we believed we could achieve,” she says.

Stella Standing Tall raised $1.25 million towards the cost of Stella’s surgery in March.

“To see Stella literally standing tall, running around and growing like a normal three-year-old, is sign of success,” Peterson says. “The spirit of Hong Kong rose to save this little girl.” The campaign is ongoing and people can keep abreast of Stella’s development on the Stella Standing Tall Facebook page. She has just been accepted on a clinical trial in the United States for treatment that may improve her condition. You can also donate money or make direct contact at [email protected].

The issue I care the mostWho let the dogs out?: There’s no denying Sai Kung is a dog-loving town – a wander along the waterfront on any given evening is evidence enough of that. Although it seems from your responses that not everyone is enamoured of our furry friends. “Yes, everyone loves dogs, but Sai Kung is filthy! [There’s] dog sh*t

everywhere,” said one respondent to our survey. “[It’s] time for a little enforcement of international hygiene standards.”A particular bug bear seems to be dogs in restaurants - particularly in the main square. Loose-leash syndrome allows many an unwelcome dog to invade the personal space of people trying to enjoy dinner a deux. Others object to the sight of precious pooches being allowed to eat off restaurant tables. And then there’s the noise. Nothing ruins an intimate dinner like other people’s dobermans or dachshunds barking loudly at each other. Our conclusion: when you’re going out to eat, leave the mutt at home.

On the bright sideSlip on your shades for this sunny home in Lobster Bay.

Some homes put you in a good mood from the moment you walk through the door. This is one of them. Cheerful, bright and open, this Lobster Bay family home has both a sense of style and a sense of humour.

The crisp white interior is enlivened with playful pops of pink and blue, and anchored by hints of cloudy slate. At its heart is the fully equipped Italian Effetti kitchen. The day starts at the wide countertop, where the family perches on bar stools for a pit-stop breakfast and checks out the messages they’ve left for each other on the magnetic board. At the other end of the day, it’s a place to catch up on the news while Mum gets busy making dinner. And if the kids feel the need to get rowdy, there’s a separate family room upstairs just for them.

light and airy

The master suite is a far more adult retreat. A glass wall brings the stunning green view right into the bedroom, so that you feel like you’re waking up in the great outdoors – a feeling heightened in the en-suite bathroom, where you can enjoy the view from the natural stone tub imported from Bali or the luxurious rain shower.

The house is fitted with a state of the art built-in AV system that allows for different “zones”. While Mum listens to her favourite radio station in one part of the house, Dad can

zone out to his tunes in another and the kids can be watch TV in the family room. And since it’s all built-in and remote controlled, if the kids have the TV on too loud, their parents can tune into their zone and turn the volume down a notch. Genius.

This modern system makes entertaining easy and the owners certainly do their share – for the royal wedding, the family hosted a garden party, making use of the multi-zone AV system and showing the wedding live on a drop-down screen in the garden.

Since opening in 1997 with the assistance of the Japanese government, the Japanese International School (JIS) has carved its own niche among Hong Kong’s international primary schools, providing a haven for students in the northeast New Territories.

In the thriving metropolis of Hong Kong, JIS offers all the advantages of a smaller school through its community atmosphere and the importance it places on personal relationships. The International Section of the school, catering to Hong Kong’s cosmopolitan community, has an enrolment of about 170 students from 20 countries. Although taught in English, all students are required to study either Mandarin or Japanese, and the school works hard to cultivate an Asian perspective of our intricate world.

Known for its small-school atmosphere, lovely campus and IB primary curriculum, say konnichi wa to the Japanese International School.

JIS has been an authorized International Baccalaureate (IB) school for more than five years, receiving high acclaim in a May 2010 review. Accordingly, JIS offers the IB Primary Years Programme as its curriculum

from reception to Primary 6. The school prides itself on its small class sizes, each with its own teaching assistant.

In a city where space is so scarce, the school is fortunate to have its own indoor swimming pool facilities, an astro-turf field and many specialized classrooms in a superb location on the edge of Tai Po Kau Nature Reserve - an area of ancient rainforest - overlooking Tolo Harbour. It’s a beautiful location, yet easily accessible with JIS bus services to many areas of Hong Kong.

Letter of the month

Dear Sai Kung Mum,Where can I find good quality organic/natural products for my baby? Mother nature

Many companies have jumped onto the “organic” bandwagon, but some are less scrupulous than others about sourcing their products. Do your research before you buy – and read the labels – to make sure you get what you pay for. One trusted brand is Organic Family, which has GOTS (Global Organic Textile Standards) approval on all its products, which are made of the finest organic, environmentally friendly materials and dyes. It’s stocked locally at Babushka (Shop 12, 66 Yi Chun Street, 2791 9070) and online at www.organicfamily.com.hk. For organic produce, try Chung Heng Organic Shop on Man Ning Street, which also sells organic toiletries, baby wipes and diapers. And try the Green Earth Society (37 See Cheung Street, 2792 0106) for everything organic from baby blankets to children’s toothpaste.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,Where can I find children’s sunglasses with proper UV protection? Shady Lady

Any sunglasses that offer UVA and UVB protection will protect children's eyes. A popular brand is Banz, which comes in a range of sizes and a rainbow of fun colours, with a secure strap that fixes around your little one’s head to hold the glasses comfortably in place. Three ranges are available – Baby Banz (for kids aged 0-2), Kidz Banz (ages 2-5) and J Banz (ages 4-10) – at Bumps To Babes, www.bumpstobabes.com.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,Are 3D movies bad for my children’s eyes? eye’m Worried

There has been some speculation about this, but because 3-D movies are relatively new there hasn’t been a chance for research on long-term effects. The 3-D glasses provided by cinemas merely filter light and alter perception and are not considered harmful. Short-term side effects – irritation, tired eyes or headaches – are similar to adjusting to new glasses and are nothing serious. However, some specialists worry that 3-D movies may cause too much strain for very young children whose vision systems are still developing. Be cautious, but not fearful.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,My son’s eczema is aggravted by the humidity and heat. Can you recommend ways to control the condition? ecz Marks The Spot

Home remedies and mindfulness can help relieve eczema symptoms. Bathing in very hot water can dry out the skin and cause further irritation, so a lukewarm bath is best followed by a natural ointment such as shea butter. It’s important to keep your home clean, especially the bedroom. And anti-allergen sheets and a good air-filtration system work wonders. Avoid clothes made of itchy wool or nylon in favour of light, breathable fabrics. But most importantly, resist

the urge to scratch – it will make things worse. Instead, relieve the itch by placing a packet of frozen peas on the affected area or gently massage around the area with your palm.

Dear Sai Kung Mum,Much as we love going on boat trips, my children sometimes suffer from seasickness. Any tips? Junk Judy

Junk trips are a great way to spend time with your kids, but motion sickness can ruin the fun. To make sure your kids don’t spend the day in a world of dizziness and pain, try these techniques. 1. Make sure they get plenty of sleep the night before; tiredness increases the likelihood of seasickness. 2. Don’t skip breakfast. Boating on an empty stomach can make you dizzy and possibly lead to headaches and nausea.3. Avoid heavy, greasy or acidic foods – keep breakfast light and fresh.4. Hydration, hydration, hydration! Make sure your children drink plenty of water. 5. Keep the kids on deck in the fresh air. Being in a cabin makes you more prone to seasickness.

health & beauty

Gone are the days when a bit of Pond’s cold cream would have done you proud. Now, a beauty regime can include everything from collagen-enriched miracle lotions to wrinkle-zapping laser treatments, and if the good people at Vogue magazine are to be believed, modern women banter about Botox more often than they swap cookery tips. But while certain aspects of the beauty industry are scarily cutting edge, others dating back centuries continue to please with their tried-and-tested methods.

Step forward the humble massage, which first saw light of day in ancient China and which no self-respecting spa can do without. For many of us, having a massage is a one-off indulgence so when you do treat yourself you want it to be a superlative experience. To this end, new spa on the block, Sense of Touch, comes up trumps with its Hot Stone Massage Therapy.

This native American-Indian traditional treatment involves the use of smooth volcanic stones, which are formed from lava spills during an eruption and have excellent heat-retention qualities. These perfect pebbles are pre-heated and release their warmth on contact with the skin, fulfilling every good masseur’s objective to warm and relax tense muscles. The massage also benefits the lymphatic system, creating a gentle but efficient drainage and provides a deeper elimination of toxins and blockages than regular massage. Used in conjunction with essential oils – such as lavender for relaxation, peppermint for digestive stimulation, mental alertness and focus, and geranium for balancing hormones - the stones also detoxify and balance energy levels while promoting inner peace.

Sense of Touch’s Hot Stone Therapy begins with the therapist placing a

Mums & Babes: The folks over at Physi-Life know how hard it can be getting back into good habits after having a baby, especially finding the time to exercise your way back to your pre-baby body after months of indulging in those naughty cravings. This is one of the reasons why they’re introducing Mums & Babes, a pilates class for mothers and their babies. In Mums & Babes, mums can get a work out while guiding their babies through gentle exercises that encourage correct posture for sitting and crawling while bonding with them “through fun exercise, touch, eye contact and lots of smiles and giggles.” says Andrew Joy, one of the founders of the program. For more information contact Andrew at [email protected] or call 6771 3501

line of hot stones along your spine. While the heat suffuses your back, she massages each of your limbs with oil and then re-massages them – only this time with a hot stone in both hands. The treatment continues with a thorough back massage before you turn over to be similarly massaged on your front, this time with a line of stones being placed from breastbone to navel.

The massage was excellent and so was the entire Sense of Touch experience. The spa, which opened in April this year, is wonderfully cool, calm and collected. It has all the requisite spa-y smells, beautiful décor (which was hand-sourced in India), and an enticing mani/pedi area as well as courtyard space that would be perfect in cooler weather.verdict: Absolutely blissful. A treat to myself after dragon boating, I went in wanting relief from an aching lower back and came out so relaxed I was barely conscious. The therapist’s touch was pitch perfect and would have made a great massage even without the stones. One to remember as a remedy for winter chills and period pain.Best bit: Being massaged with the warm stones. It felt wonderful, as though the sun’s rays were pouring into my every muscle.Downside: Having to leave the spa and get on with my normal routine. Price: $650/60 minutes.

Born and educated in Sydney, Brad moved to Hong Kong in 1998 where he has worked in a number of practices mainly on Hong Kong Island.

Opening in June 2011, Best Friends Veterinary Hospital is Brad’s first practice, specialising in 24-hour hospital and veterinary care for cats and dogs, although he has seen the occasional bird. He has x-ray facilities, surgery and a dog grooming service. Sai Kung magazine’s Carmel Taylor also works from Brad’s practice on a part time basis focusing on pet skin disorders.

Best Friends is situated in the Hoi King building, meaning Sea View, on Hoi Pong Street Sai Kung. Hoi King has had the same owner since it was built in the late 1950’s. Back then the street was bursting to the seams with people, shops and hawkers. Many locals have fond childhood memories of the quaint building and Brad has even incorporated some of the original ornaments and signage into the newly renovated premises.

As he takes me on a tour and orders in special clippers for my Labradoodle, I can’t help but to admire his service and passion for dogs, cats, the building, Sai Kung and his interesting neighbours.

My dog is sulking again. I have successfully wrestled with him to change his tick collar – But battling with an unwilling dog is preferable to finding ticks on his fur, and these hot and sticky months are ticky weather.

Many people have an irrational fear of these unwanted dinner guests, but it’s important not to become frantic.

While on duty in Britain a long time ago, a panicked client called from the local pub to say he was rushing in with an emergency. All I caught of the garbled message was “huge tick” and “it won’t budge”. Not amused at being hauled from my bed to remove a parasite, I drove across town to meet him. It was worse than I thought.

Apparently as Bingo lounged under his master’s feet at the Drover’s Arms, someone stroked him and found an engorged tick. The beer-drinking

community assembled to offer suggestions, opting for folk remedy number one; Despite 30 minutes

of being doused in 40 per cent vodka, the inebriated acarid wasn’t letting go.

So on to folk remedy number two, a box of matches. You don’t need a chemistry degree to know what happens when alcohol meets a naked flame (think Christmas pudding).

Thanks to the quick thinking of the only sober person on the scene (the barman), who smothered him with a coat, Bingo escaped with only singed hair and a fear of drunken smokers.

Reassured that the quivering canine suffered no serious physical damage, his chagrined owner snarled, “Vetrny [this is how vets are addressed in parts of rural England] – what about that... thing!” Yes, the soused and slightly charred bloodsucker was still hanging on.

Luckily, my veterinary training ensured that I was able to deftly remove the pest in seconds, much to the amazement and annoyance of the client and his mates.

Upon seeing ticks, most people will attempt to tug and pull. I don’t recommend this. Upset ticks can regurgitate gut contents into your dog’s skin, increasing the chances of transmitting two or more potentially fatal blood parasites into your dog. After losing a beloved canine friend to a tick, I am now rigorous about preventing them. Whether he likes it or not, my stubborn mutt gets a new Preventic collar monthly, as well as a topical insecticide. Because, let’s face it, ticks suck.

Arborist Franz nel can be contacted on 93824241

It’s during this time of year that I realize a garden is so much more than the sum of its plants. Our garden is teeming with life.

The dawn chorus of deafening cicadas make for a good morning alarm, that’s if you managed to sleep through the frogs croaking through the night or the lonely bird who has spent a month plaintively hooting for mate.

There is also the lullaby of dogs going mad for the rats, who are on the prowl for the croaking frogs. And the frogs are going mad for the termites which fly in blind desire for any light we carelessly leave on. Finally, there are the snakes who snack on the frogs and rats. This time of year, our garden is one big culinary party. The circle of life is in full effect. Oh, and let’s not forget to mention the enormous spiders – magnificent black and yellow giants who make their homes high up in the branches of the Norfolk pines which line our garden. We have watched them hold on bravely through typhoons and downpours. Big respect.

We are lucky to have these mature, majestic pines providing shade over the garden but whoever planted them must have been barmy. They grow well over 100 feet and sadly, ours have all been topped to try and control their height. When we first moved in, one pine was leaning so dangerously towards our house we made a sad but practical decision to fell it (with government permission, of course). This complex job was done single-handedly by arborist Franz Nel. A two-day job and incredible to watch, Nel first stripped the tree of branches

leaving a needle-like trunk piercing the sky then, using a rope and pulley system, he lowered the tree gently to the ground.

This felling aside, I am a great tree fan and wondered how easy it is to propagate trees….Why not think big in your garden?

If I had the space, I’d have a garden full of Queen Crepe Myrtle, Flame Trees and the African Tulip Trees. These are the beautiful trees that line Clearwater Bay Road and which have been in magnificent purple and red blossom. Franz tells me this year has been particularly good for blooms due to the colder dry

winter and the late summer rains. He adds that Lichi trees have also benefited which promises a good crop later

this year for us and the birds. Before you do go ahead with tree planting,

Franz offers some good points to consider. What size tree could you manage in your space? Is there plenty of drainage? And how would a mature tree fit with the existing landscape? You should

also consider whether you want a seasonal deciduous or evergreen and think about

leaf shape and flower colour. Before you plant anything close to your house, think ahead – how big would adult tree height reach?

I love our small root system easy maintenance palms – it’s an easy way to

transform our garden into a tropical resort. Cocktails anyone?

Summer comes and for many people, it means time to plan a nice, long vacation. Passport, check. Sunblock, check. Carefree attitude, check. But wait - something may be missing. Have you made sure your home is safe and secure?

There are two key basics in home security; reliable door and window locks and intruder alarms. Although it doesn’t sound like much, many people find excuses not to take these simple measures, creating a golden opportunity for burglars. Particularly if a burglar knows the house is vacant for a long period of time.

You may be wondering “how would a burglar know that I’m not home?” A letterbox bursting with mail from

the weeks that you’re on vacation is a dead giveaway. The same applies to delivered

newspapers. To avoid this, ask someone you trust to collect your mail or newspapers for you. You could also ask them to check in on your home regularly.

Our Rural Patrol Officers are constantly liaising with village house residents and maids while on patrol, offering home security advice and obtaining valuable information. Though some reports from residents turn out to be a misunderstanding, we deeply appreciate their vigilance

and awareness for their environment.

shouldn’t throw stones.Clearly dangerous or obtrusive structures,

illegal or otherwise, should be removed. But if the government pushes ahead with its zero-tolerance policy, rural patriarchs are threatening a “bloody revolution”. The New Territories could erupt in a twisted parody of the conflict in the Occupied Territories. Indigenous villagers might adopt the disproportionate tactics of the Israeli Defense Force in order to protect what

Another tactic that could be borrowed from the Israelis is to just keep building. In theory, eventually a tipping point will be reached whereby dismantling the illegal structures becomes completely impractical and constitutes a crime of comparable size to the original offense. My own glorified rooftop awning, for example, might be better protected from governmental dismemberment if I extend it to create a small seafood restaurant, four parking spaces and a village hall.

At the time of writing, the dispute appears to be developing into a major political football. Villagers would be wise to review their tactics. An alternative to their current

belligerent stance might be to look more like the victims of the piece by asking both the

United States and the United Nations to act as conflict mediators. Given their track record on the prevention of settlement building in Palestine, they would accelerate illegal construction while procrastinating over the arguments for the next four decades.

By then not only will the problem be Beijing’s, but every village house will look like cross between a 1940s five-storey walk up and a Norman Foster-designed shantytown.

villager on the Roof

Now that Barack Obama has called for the formation of a Palestinian state to be based on “pre-1967 borders”, we may finally see a slowing of construction of illegal Israeli settlements on the West Bank of the River Jordan – arguably the foremost obstruction to Middle Eastern peace for almost half a century.

In an apparent case of political serendipity, Legco has also decided to get tough on illegal structures. However, the impetus comes not from a desire to right any long-established wrong but to save its blushes following an embarrassing report by the Ombudsman citing discrepancies between the enforcement of the building ordinance in urban and rural areas. In short, the townies have decided that if they can’t get away with enclosing their ozone-depleted balconies then the hillbillies can forget about putting a roof on their outdoor spaces.

The government and rural community groups are digging in for a fight that has been decades in the making, reflecting a deep-rooted conflict between Hong Kong and the New Territories. The strength of the government’s argument, however, is somewhat undermined by the fact that so many public officials appear to have built their own prohibited extensions. And, as we all know, people in illegal glasshouses
