Dear Friends of the Foundation,
The theme of this year’s annual report, “A New Day is Dawning,” has great significance.Next year at this time we will be in our new home in a larger facility with new state-of-the-art equipment, new donor recognition elements and technological and physicalenhancements resulting in improved safety, security and comfort for our patients andtheir loved ones.
2009 was an exceptional year in many ways. In a challenging economic climate, theFoundation was able to disburse over $468,000 from the Annual Fund to the hospitaland over $3.4 million from the New Hospital Fund.
Plans for the design, supply, delivery and installation of our donor recognition elementsat the new hospital are well underway to recognize all our donors that are currently onthe Celebration of Life and Beacon of Hope donor walls. A new Campaign Feature willalso be installed in the new hospital’s lobby recognizing donors that gave $5,000 andover to the New Hospital Campaign.

SAULT AREA HOSPITAL FOUNDATION Annual Report 2009~20101
“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive,to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” ~ Marcus Aurelius
Augusto (Gus) P. Palombi,Board President
Cheryl Pavoni,Executive Director & Treasurer
It is important for everyone to not lose sight of the fact that the need for financial support continues on after the Foundation is moved to thenew hospital. Equipment purchased as little as five years ago is rapidly being eclipsed by technological improvements occurring at anexponential rate. In order to keep pace with these demands and improvements, there will be a continuous need for funds to ensure that thenewest and most advanced equipment is purchased. This equipment is an essential part of recruiting and retaining physicians and is vitalto provide quality care to the patients we serve.
I hope you find this year’s annual report inspirational and you are able to reflect on how generous our community has been over the past year.“A New Day is Dawning” is quickly approaching and the Foundation staff and Board look forward to continuing the relationshipswe have created with our donors, volunteers, physicians and staff after we move into our new hospital in March 2011.
There is nothing more precious than good health, and nothing more important than good healthcare. Thank you for your support of the SaultArea Hospital Foundation; it is the best investment you can make in order to ensure that everyone in Sault Ste. Marie and the Algoma Districthas access to the best care.
Gus Palombi, Board President Cheryl Pavoni, Executive Director & Treasurer

Special NoteWe would like to express our sincere appreciation to all of you who have expressed your wish to remain anonymous.
The Foundation has taken every effort to ensure that all those who donated a minimum of $500 to the Sault Area Hospital Foundation betweenApril 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010 have been recognized in the Annual Report. We extend our deepest apologies for any errors or omissions
and ask that you notify our office so we may make the correction.
Donor recognition in the Annual Report is based on the total amount of donations during a single fiscal year. Next year, in our July 2011Annual Report for the fiscal year of April 1, 2010 to March 31, 2011, we will be changing our Annual Report recognition. The current limitof $500 will be changed to a total giving of $1,000 or more in donations during a single fiscal year. This level is in keeping with the donor
recognition on our “Beacon of Hope” donor wall which remains unchanged at $1,000 or more and is based on a donor’s lifetime of giving.

This allows the patient tosafely receive therapy in their homes that would otherwise require ahospital stay. We also use them on inpatients for pain control and somechemotherapy. The pumps can conveniently fit into a fanny pack.Patients are able to maintain the best quality of life possible. In theclinic, pumps are used on a daily basis.

Bedside Spirometer for the Respiratory DepartmentThe Bedside Spirometer is used to measure basic lung function. It givesmeasurements of airway flow and some lung volumes. It is a safe, easyto use screening tool to quantify the severity of known lung disease, assess responsiveness to medications, and to assess risk for surgicalprocedures known to affect lung function. Reports are generated to showthis information. This information is then interpreted by a physicianand further treatment or screening can be ordered if required. The newspirometer replaced an older machine. It provides a more thoroughreport and is much easier to use.
Cost of Bedside Spirometer: $2,897.12

Autoclavable Lens & CordsThe scopes and light cords that we had previously were older technologyand were being sent out for repair often. The new high definitiontechnology necessitated the purchase of new scopes to complement ournew camera systems.
Laparoscopic surgery is minimally invasive surgery. This means thatthe surgeon can operate on the patient by using a camera, scope andlight cord to see inside the patient instead of using an open incision. Anopen incision takes longer to heal and means more recovery time forthe patient.
Fetal Doppler• Assesses the heart beat of a fetus
Stethoscopes and Digital Thermometers• Assess the heartbeats, lungs’ sounds and temperature of babies and children
Sleeper Chairs• Accommodates parents who need to sleep in the hospital to help care and comfort their child
Students, parents, and staff from Our Lady of Lourdes and St. TheresaCatholic Schools worked hard to raise over $12,641 for our Hospital’sMaternal Child Care Fund through the ‘Mission Possible FundraisingInitiative.’

Sonosite Ultrasound Machine for the Surgical DepartmentThe Sonosite portable ultrasound system produces high-quality imagesthat are used for diagnostic evaluations, as well as guiding invasiveprocedures. It is used by Anesthetists to perform nerve blocks and placevascular access lines. This modern technology allows the Anesthetistto see the structures, thereby minimizing the risk to patients. This hasbeen a long-awaited vital piece of equipment for the surgical department.
