Golf Tip: The importance of the degree of bounce on wedges.

by Stef Visagie, Head Coach of Centurion Academy

Many of us buy golf clubs standard from the shelf, and race off to the course to try them out, not knowing if the bounce, lie angle and loft specifications are suited to us or the conditions. Standard bounce for a Lob wedge (60o) is 6o, Standard bounce on a Sand Wedge (56o) is 12o and Standard bounce on a Gap Wedge (52o) is 8o. That is the standard. Today there’s a wide variety of different soled wedges available. Manufacturers make their specialised wedges to be standard throughout the set. Make sure you know what type of wedges you have in the bag and what their playability is. The surface firmness that you are playing on changes in different seasons, and you have to adjust accordingly. Wedges with less bounce would be a better choice when surfaces are firmer. Also factors influencing your wedge choice and bounce are the technique you intend to use and the lie of the ball. If you're a player that plays a lot of bump and run shots around the greens then higher bounce clubs would be better. If you play lots of lob shots and like to open the club face when you chip or pitch then lower bounce clubs are preferable. Reasons: if you open the club face the bounce increases, as you present more of the sole to the ground, and vice versa when you close the club face. Technique wise, it also depends where your hand position is, behind or ahead of the ball, or your ball position, back or forward in the stance. The steepness into the striking area also is an important factor determining how the club will react when it hits the ground and strikes the ball. Another good tip: always take your lie into consideration when you make a shot choice around the greens, use the bounce and loft of the club to hit good shots out of bad lies, whether firm, fluffy, loose or tight lies. For example; use a pitching wedge (47o/low bounce) for a chip shot when you have a tight lie and plenty of green to work with. The best practice: grab some different lofted clubs with a variety of bounce on them and scoot over to the chipping green, hit different shots from all types of funny lies and see for yourself what results this variety of clubs brings you. There is so much more to learn about these interesting factors, so please feel free to consult me or your PGA Professional. You can book a lesson on http://www.bookagolflesson.co.za/centurionacademy

Book Review – Africa’s Finest: The most sustainable and responsible safari destinations in sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands.

Alarmed by staggering declines in wildlife numbers around the continent in tandem with many unsustainable practices in the safari and travel industry, safari innovator Colin Bell and naturalist writer / environmental scientist David Bristow designed this project to assess the safari industry throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The result is Africa’s Finest, a massive book in every sense that showcases the most responsible and sustainable safari operations on the continent – illustrated by superb photographs taken by over 50 of Africa’s finest photographers. The 400 page book presents those who do good, some of those who do bad, and then it offers a blue-print for the ideal safari industry, showing current best practices in terms of green operations, nature conservation and community partnerships. Groot Constantia wines were awarded a total of five gold medals at two recent international wine awards. The Monde Selection in Brussels and the International Wine Challenge in London saw Groot Constantia walking away with three and then two gold medals respectively. The Groot Constantia 2010 Grand Constance, 2010 Gouverneurs Reserve Red and 2012 Sauvignon Blanc wines achieved gold at the Monde Selection awards whilst the 2010 Grand Constance and the 2012 Sauvignon Blanc also achieved gold at the International Wine Challenge. This follows closely on the back of the recent awards won at the 2013 Top 100 SA Wines competition which saw four of Groot Constantia’s wines selected as winners.

Groot Constantia is South Africa’s oldest wine farm and was developed by Simon

van der Stel in 1685, where he lived and produced fine wines for 27 years until his death.
