Learners mentoring learners (Chess)
Benefits of playing chess for elementary learnersMentioned below are some of the most important benefits that children can avail by practicing chess on a regular basis –
1. Playing the game of Chess on a regular basis right from the childhood improves the learning, thinking, analytical power, and decision-making ability of the child.
2. Chess makes the child learn how to strategize aspects of the game and life. In addition, a child can also learn the importance of foresight, and planning.
3. Playing the game of Chess on a regular basis right from the childhood teaches the importance of being disciplined in life.
4. Practicing Chess regularly also aids in improving the self-confidence of the child, which is extremely essential for the child’s growth.
5. In the game of chess, a child learns to do a thorough analysis, research, and assessment of the situation before making any decision. Such an exercise provides mental clarity to the child. Mental clarity and mental dexterity is required for solving problems, analyze consequences, and formulate future tactics.
6. Children playing chess from an early age exhibit extraordinary memory skills.7. Chess also helps in improving concentration and academic performance of the child.
On a whole, playing the game of chess is essential for transforming a child into a responsible, disciplined, and wise human being.

Stem enrichment activities in sage…lend themselves nicely to learner interest during enrichment class!
Brandywine river museum tripWhile many of our gifted learners interests and strengths lie in the area of STEM, there are also those who have a passion for the arts. Many of our gifted learners are very talented or interested especially in the visual arts. So I arranged a day trip to the Brandywine River Museum in Chadd’s Ford to take a tour based on “Storytelling in Art.” Learners attending encompassed grades 4 through 8. The learners also had an opportunity to do some sketching in one of the galleries.
Student Enrichment experiences (see seminars)This year, we had 100% participation in all SEE seminars with the exception of one seminar that was held on the same day as the 6th grade field trip. These experiences are great enjoyed by our PV learners and there are frequently one or two learners who are on standby to attend if the opportunity arises. There is much variety of seminars offered by the IU13 to meet the indiviudual interests exhibited by our gifted learners.

Career ShadowOne of our PV learners, Diana Palade, is very interested in pursuing a career in Veterinary Science. As a 6th grader, I arranged for Diana to shadow a small animal veterinary practice at Atglen Veterinary Clinic. As an 8th grader, I set up a second shadow experience for Diana with Gap Veterinary Associates. Diana, and another learner, were permitted to shadow a large animal(dairy cow) veterinarian one day last May. Diana is here tonight to share that experience with you tonight.
