Gwen Drake It is the Bishop's intention that the Rev. Gwen Drake will assume the role of Sage District Superintendent starting July 1. I’ve been asked to talk about myself (one of those subjects I’m very familiar with). I was born in Heppner, Oregon a small town in Eastern Oregon, not to be confused with Hermiston (35 miles away). My home was on an 1100 acre wheat ranch with a small herd of cattle, a dog, some cats, chickens, and a few horses. I lost my Dad when I was 14 in a hunting accident. My Mom, the Rev. Grace Drake left Heppner for seminary when I was 18 years old. When she graduated she served Union/North Powder, Filer, and Ashton United Methodist Churches retiring when I was ordained a Deacon (back in the double ordination days) in 1986. She died in November 2014 at age 94. I have 3 siblings. My sister lives in Payette, Idaho. My two brothers live in Heppner, the older one is a third generation wheat farmer on the ranch where I grew up. Growing up on a ranch, I learned to get my chores done first, to grow up fast and independently, to live frugally and simply, and to not be afraid of being a pioneer. I never imagined being a pastor, let alone a District Superintendent. So, I’m still living into this calling after a short career in Physical Education. I have served Myrtle Point UMC (now closed), Jason Lee UMC in Salem, Rainier/Clatskanie UMC’s, Dallas UMC, and Hillsboro UMC. Even though I love the green, the trees, and even the rain, I truly feel like I’m moving back to God’s big sky country (away from fleas and slugs). When I left for seminary in Berkeley, California, I fit all my belongings and my dog in two station wagons. I returned from seminary with a husband, a daughter, my dog, and all our belongings in a U-Haul truck and a VW Bus. I’ll be coming to the Sage District with a dog, a cat and all my belongings in a moving van. I have two daughters, 27 and almost 30 years old. I have two grandsons who will be 2 and 5 in May. I went through a divorce 13 years ago, which was sad and the best decision for both of us. I’m somewhat of an expert of internet dating; but apparently am not at finding a partner with whom to share my life….and, that is okay. Being a District Superintendent is very time- consuming and demanding. I chose to give up my horse two years ago because he was not getting enough of my attention. My hope at this moment is to be your District Superintendent for the next three years—taking me to the end of eight years (maximum D.S. term) and to retirement. Of course, the Bishop needs to be okay with the first part of this plan. I’m looking forward to learning about all 56 churches in the Sage District, listening to your vision, hopes and dreams. I know I have big shoes to fill (literally and metaphorically). I will miss Kim’s wisdom and humor at the cabinet table. I plan to hit the ground running (I run 3-4 miles almost every morning) and ask for your grace and prayers as we enter into this new relationship.

50,000th Meal Served in Blackfoot! On Tuesday night, January 12th, Community Dinner Table (CDT) of Blackfoot served its 50,000th meal at the Jason Lee Memorial United Methodist Church (JSMUMC). The lucky patron was James Howard who had traveled to Blackfoot to take his young ward Jason Denlinger to the dinner. James comes from Idaho Falls to help Jason with the social growth and interaction that he finds each week at the dinners. Both were delighted to be recognized and James especially appreciated the gifts that were presented. Read more.

Mark your calendars for One Great Hour of Sharing - Sunday, March 6th.

DECEMBER 2015 GIVING TUESDAY BRINGS AMAZING RESULTS

United Methodists gave generously during "Giving Tuesday, Dec. 1st. Nearly 6000 donors from 27 countries donated $2.8 million through The Advance to support mission and ministries around the world.

Our share of the mission of the church is through the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). You may think a school bag and school items have nothing to do with relief supplies. Just tell that to this young school boy from South Sudan. When asked what he had in his bag, he replied, "Everything I own." You see he lives in the bush some distance from the Methodist School so he leaves home every weekday morning with his school supplies and literally everything he owns in that bag hanging around his neck. He is afraid his possessions will be stolen if he leaves them at his "make shift" home.

You can be part of this outreach of love by collecting money or supplies for kits, offering your prayer support, and working at West Depot individually or with a team.
