    Steelers 34 Bulldogs 12; 16 October 2010

The Singapore sun was blazing hot on this final weekend of regular season

SAFL football, but not as hot as the desire of both teams to finish with a win.

The Bulldogs opened by kicking off to the Steelers, and Tomas Prudencio gave

his team good field position on the Steelers 43 after a 10 yard return.

Steelers fullback Hayes Kimball started the offensive show by running straight

up the middle for a 1st down to the Bulldogs 45. Kimball repeated this

performance and drove the ball down to the Bulldogs 32 yard line for another

1st down. The Steelers were on a roll, and it was Hayes Kimball again doing the

rolling over the Bulldogs defense for a 3rd 1st down to the 22 yard line. But

the Steelers went not much further on a good stop by Bulldogs Chase Pope and

Olivier Damas. The ball went over to the Bulldogs on downs.

The Bulldogs were stopped on their 1st

offensive drive, despite a nice 8 yard run

by Creighton Little around the left side. The Men in Black punted the ball away,

and Matt Conklin of the Steelers returned the ball back to his own 42 yard line.

The ball changed hands once more after the Steelers went 3 and out. Bulldogs

ball on their own 45 yard line.

But the Steelers defense again held firm, and the ball went over to the Yellow

Men on a punt which went out of bounds at the Steelers 33 yard line. 1st and

    10. Hayes Kimball pounded the ball for 8 yards, and then Matt Conklin burst

through a nice hole for a gain to the Bulldogs 45. The Steelers kept the ball on

the ground and pushed forward to the Bulldogs 25, and a 1st down. Kevin Hurh

saw some action as a ball carrier, but then 1st Quarter ended, with the score

    tied at 0.

At the start of the 2nd Quarter, the one-two punch of Kimball and Conklin kept

the Steelers drive alive. With the ball on the Bulldogs 19, Steelers QB Jamie

Onischuk hit Matt Conklin on a short pass, which Conklin stretched down to the

11 yard line. With the ball on the 10, the Steelers drive came to an abrupt halt

when the ball popped loose on a quarterback keeper, and Aidan Hanley of theBulldogs recovered giving possession to his team.

The Bulldogs drive started well on a long pass from QB Danny McCarvel to John

Roberts on a fly pattern up the right side. Receiver Roberts was finally hauled

down up at his own 43 yard line. 1st and 10 Bulldogs. The Bulldogs passing

game then turned up a notch when Quarterback Andrew Roberts threw a

perfect strike to Olivier Damas over the middle. Despite the fact that the ball

was tipped by a Steelers defender, Damas was able to pull the ball in and then

sprinted for the Steelers goal line. Olivier Damas was caught by Matt Conklin,

but not before he crossed into the Steelers endzone for the 1st 6 points of the

game. The score was Bulldogs 6, Steelers 0.

The Steelers took over after the ensuing kickoff on their own 40 yard line. A

penalty pushed them back to their 35, but then QB Jamie Onischuk put the ball

in the air about 30 yards and hit Jeffry Smith in stride, who kept going for a

Steelers score. Just like that, the score evened at 6 apiece with 5 minutes left

to play in the 1st half.

Although the Bulldogs got the ball back, they couldnt move it so had to punt it

away. The punt took a decisively Bulldogs bounce and the Steelers set up shop

on the Bulldogs 47. QB Onischuk must have liked his previous pass completion,

because he wasted no time in lofting another one. This time, it was Erik

Vantilburg who ran under the ball and dashed to the Bulldogs 30 before being

    pulled down.

The Steelers ground attack was then set in motion, spearheaded by runs from

Hayes Kimball and Matt Conklin. As a result, the ball found its way down to the

Bulldogs 3 yard line. The Bulldogs defense, led by Olivier Damas, Chase Pope,

and Andrew Roberts, made a determined goal line stand, but eventually, the

Steelers QB Onischuk managed to slip through for the score. The point after

attempt was made, but a penalty negated the 2 points. Another try for 2 was

unsuccessful, so the score became Steelers 12, Bulldogs 6.

With only 11.2 seconds left on the clock, the Steelers kicked off to the Bulldogs.

But, a lot can happen in 11.2 seconds. The Bulldogs put the ball in play on

their 30 yard line and then opted to put the ball up for a long pass over the

middle. As fate would have it, Matt Conklin of the Steelers tipped the ball and

it landed square in the hands of teammate Jared Leow. With the help of some

aggressive blocking, Leow ran the ball into the Bulldogs endzone for a quick

score. However, the Refs must have felt the blocking was a bit too aggressive,so a penalty negated the runback. The Bulldogs dodged a major bullet, but lost

the ball to the Steelers. All within 11.2 seconds!!

What must have been the longest 11.2 seconds in SAFL history, the Steelers

tried a pass of their own deep in Bulldogs territory. However, Bulldogs Nate

Harris smelled a pick off, and stepped in front of the ball. Harris wasted no

time in making a bee-line straight for the Steelers endzone for 6 points. The 2

point conversion was no good, and the score was deadlocked at 12 points each.

    All within 11.2 seconds..

The 2nd half started with the promise of even more excitement. Bulldogs Nate

Harris continued his running clinic by receiving the Steelers kickoff and racing

down the right sideline past midfield to the Steelers 40 yard line. Unfortunately

for the Bulldogs, they could not capitalize on the great run, so had to punt the

ball away. However, the Steelers were penalized for roughing the kicker, which

gave the Bulldogs an automatic 1st down on the Steelers 35 yard line.

Again, the Bulldogs could not take advantage of the new set of downs, so had

to punt away. Matt Conklin received the ball, and evaded the Bulldogs defender

by bouncing off and then running all the way down to the Bulldogs 25.

Excellent field position. After a penalty put them back on the 30, Matt Conklin

again got the call and dragged a couple of Bulldogs with him down to the 20.

Tenacious running, plus a defensive holding penalty took the ball down to 1st

and goal. Hayes Kimball then ran from 3 yards out for the 3rd Steelers score.

The 2 point conversion failed and the score was now 18 to 12, Steelers.

On the ensuing kickoff, Bulldogs Danny McCarvel ran the ball back to his own

43 yard line. The Bulldogs failed to convert, so punted the ball to Steelers Matt

Conklin, who ran the ball to the Bulldogs 30 yard line. A holding penalty

brought the ball back and the Steelers started on the Bulldogs 40 instead.

A combination of Kimball and Conklin, aided by Bulldogs penalties, were once

again knocking on the door. The Bulldogs put up a valiant goal line stand, but

the Steelers Hayes Kimball prevailed for the 4th Steelers TD. QB Jamie

Onischuk passed to Jake Derksen for the 2 pt conversion, and the scoring gap

widened to Steelers 26, Bulldogs 12, with 3 minutes left in the 3rd Quarter.

On the ensuing kickoff, Bulldogs Nate Harris ran the ball back to his own 34

yard line. On the next play, however, Jared Leow got his 2nd interception of the

day by picking off a Bulldogs pass on the Steelers 34 yard line. The 3rd Quarter

in this exciting match-up soon came to a close with the Steelers leading, 26 to12.

With the 4th Quarter starting, the Steelers were still in possession. In this case,

the Yellow Men could not move the ball, and had to punt away. The Bulldogs

were also void of a 1st down, so they returned the favor. In a squib kick, the

Steelers took the bouncing punt and advanced it to the Bulldogs 27 yard line.

Matt Conklin wasnt finished for the day, and he worked his way down to the

Bulldogs 13. Erik Vantilburg pounded the ball down towards the goal line,

which set up another Matt Conklin TD. QB Onischuk kept the ball for 2 more

points, and the score widened to Steelers 34, Bulldogs 12.

The remaining 5 minutes of the game saw a couple of changes of possession,

but no significant threats. Steelers Jake Derksen put an end to one final

offensive drive by the Bulldogs with an interception down to the Bulldogs 15

yard line. The clock ran to zero, and the final score of the final game for these

2 great teams was: Steelers 34, Bulldogs 12.

    Oilers 24 Vikings 18; 16 October 2010

As numbers go, the 2010 World League season is unique a showdown was

coming. The Steelers had won their game, making their record 4 wins, 2

losses. The Oilers had a 4 win, 1 loss record going into their final game, and

the Vikings were hungry at 3 wins and 2 losses. Doing the math, 3 teams could

wind up the season in a 3-way tie for first.thats if the Vikings beat the Oilers.

    And, everybody knew it.

This intense game started off with the Vikings kicking off to the Oilers Danial

Jalil. Jalil ran the ball back to his own 25 yard line, where the Oilers started

their drive. On the 1st play from scrimmage, Oilers Alex DiBiagio wove his way

around the left side for 20 yard gain up to the Oilers 45 yard line. The Oilers,

operating out of the Wildcat formation (direct snap to running back) advanced

the ball into Viking territory, but loss possession on downs due to a stubborn

Viking defense. 1st and 10 Vikings on their own 36 yard line.

It was now the Vikings turn to start claiming their share of 1st place. The

Vikings chose to keep the ball on the ground, but the Oilers defense was up to

    10/36

the task. The Vikings were forced to punt, but due to a good kick and roll, theOilers had to start deep in their own territory.

The next Oilers drive could not produce a 1st down, so they elected to punt. The

ball went out of bounds at the Oilers 36 yard line, where the Vikings set up for

their next drive. Vikings Neil Smith ran up the middle, then Joshua Dawe got

enough for the 1st down to the Oilers 25 yard line. However, the Boys in Blue

toughened their defense, and the Vikings went no further. The Oilers took over

on downs at their own 20 yard line.

Again, in this battle of the defenses, the Vikings would not yield a 1st down and

the Oilers had to punt. The Vikings took over on their 40 yard line. On 3rd and

10, the Vikings Quarterback Tyler Creasman connected on a pass over the

middle to David Shum for 10 yards and a 1st down. The clock ran down on a

very fast 1st Quarter, with the score locked up at nil.

On the very 1st play of the 2nd Quarter, however, the Vikings gave their fans

something to cheer about when QB Creasman hit Neil Smith on a perfectly

timed fly pattern, past Oilers defenders and into the endzone for a quick 6. The

2-pt conversion failed, but the Vikings had drawn 1st blood: Vikings 6, Oilers 0.

On the ensuing kickoff, Alex DiBiagio fielded the short kick and brought it back

to his own 45 yard line. The Oilers offense then got to work. On 3rd down,

Oilers Sam Wright took the Wildcat handoff from Robert Morris and turned on a

burst of speed to run the right side all the way down to the Vikings 20 yard line.

1st down. On the next play, Robert Morris kept the ball and powered straight

ahead for nearly 10 yards before being tripped up. Morris again kept the ball

for a solid gain down to the Vikings 5 yard line, setting up a 1st and goal

situation. Sam Wright again got the call, and wove his way through Vikings

defenders to score the Oilers 1st touchdown of the game. To cap off the drive,

Robert Morris plowed his way into the endzone to add 2 more points. The Oilers

gained the lead at 8 to 6.

The Vikings took over on their 35 yard line following the kickoff, but soon

coughed up the ball on a fumble. Robert Morris of the Oilers came up with the

ball and returned possession to the Oilers. Morris again carried the ball anddrove it down to the Vikings 18 yard line. The Viking defense started to counter

Again, in this battle of defenses, the Oilers covered the pass well and stopped

the run, so the Vikings were forced to punt. The Oilers took over on their own

37 yard line. The Oilers next drive was short-lived, however, when Vikings

made his way down to the Oilers 33 yard line. On the next play, QB Tyler

Creasman kept the ball and looked like he was stopped at the line. However,

Creasman worked his way around the left side behind blockers and dashed

down to the Oilers 15 before being pushed out of bounds. Joshua Dawe then

pounded the ball inside the Oilers 10, followed by big Chris Hampton who

powered his way to the Oilers 5 yard line. The Oilers put up a stubborn goal

line stand, but eventually the Vikings found a hole and exploited it. Vikings

Chris Hampton got the call, and dove the remaining yard to give the Vikings a

12 to 6 lead over the Oilers.

The Oilers took over after the kickoff, deep in their own territory. Vikings John

Schell made a good defensive play by batting down an Oilers pass. Sam Wright

turned a broken pass play for the Oilers into some real yardage on a broken

field run to his own 33 yard line. Now, Sam Wright took the Wildcat snap from

center Nick Starr and passed to receiver Corey Burkett for a 10 yard gain and a

1st down to the Oilers 43. Thats when disaster struck for the Oilers. With little

    time left in the 1st

half, the Oilers elected to pass, but the ball found its way intothe hands of Vikings David Shum who ran it all the way back into the Oilers

endzone. Touchdown! With the point after attempt no good, the score widened

    to 18 to 8, Vikings.

The Oilers added some late-quarter excitement when they performed a reverse

from the Wildcat, and behind some good blocking, Alex DiBiagio nearly made it

to the Vikings endzone before David Shum ended the threat. The very exciting

1st Half came to a close with the score Vikings 18, Oilers 8.

At the start of the 2nd Half, the Oilers tried an on-side kick, but the Vikings

retained possession at their 40 yard line. The Vikings pushed up to Midfield onruns by Joshua Dawe and Chris Hampton, and achieved a 1st down. A late hit

gave the Vikings another 1st down at the Oilers 40 yard line. The Vikings

continued to march towards the Oilers endzone on an 8 yard run by Joshua

Dawe, followed by a quarterback keeper by Tyler Creasman which swept down

to the Oilers 24. But the Oilers defense, sensing that one more score would be

impossible to overcome, stiffened. On a 4th down and 2, the Oilers stopped the

run and took over on downs. It was now Oiler ball.

The Oilers drive started again in the Wildcat, and the handoff went to Sam

Wright. Wright juked and dodged his way past Viking defenders to reclaim

some much needed yardage for the Oilers. Ball on the Oiler 34. Runs by

Robert Morris, coupled with a Vikings penalty, took the ball to the midfield hash.

Morris pushed on down to the Vikings 45, then Alex DiBiagio took the handoff

and swept right to go out of bounds at the Vikings 35. DiBiagio worked again,

this time around the left for another 6 yards. They Robert Morris took the snap

and bulldozed his way to the Viking 15 yard line, breaking several tackles along

the way. Morris was not to be denied he plowed forward again, carrying

several defenders with him, to the 5 yard line of the Vikings. The next handoff

went to Sam Wright, who worked his way to the Vikings 1 yard line. Finally,

Jake Walker, who had been injured in the 1st Quarter, came back in and dodged

past defenders to claim another 6 points for the Boys in Blue. Touchdown!

Walker added another 2 points, and the score narrowed to a heart-pounding 18

to 16, Vikings. And it was this way that the 3rd Quarter of play ended.

Next, Sam Wright took the Wildcat snap and handed off to Alex DiBiagio who

wove his way along the right sideline for another Oiler 1st down to the

Vikings 38. The Oilers had mostly stayed on the ground so far, but not on the

next play. Morris handed off to Sam Wright who lofted a pass to Alex DiBiagio

along the right sideline. DiBiagio turned on the speed and ran down to the

Vikings 15 yard line before being pulled down. 1st and 10, Oilers, knocking on

With time now winding down in the 4th Quarter, the clock was becoming

increasingly important. The Vikings Chris Hampton punched through for a

Viking 1st down to his own 29 yard line. The Oilers had to put up a stiff defense

and get the ball back. And they did the Vikings were unable to convert

another 1st down and were forced to punt the ball away. Oilers Trent Fish

fielded the punt on his own 45, and returned it all the way to the Vikings 32

yard line. Oiler ball, 1st and 10.

With not much time left, the Oilers went on the offensive Sam Wright took the

handoff and ran to the Vikings 23 before being dropped. The Oilers again

demonstrated the versatility of the Wildcat formation this time, Robert Morris

took the snap, handed off to Trent Fish, who then passed to Corey Burkett.

Burkett took the ball and ran down to the Viking 13 yard line, giving the Oilers a

1st down. Morris and Fish each ran the ball, which was now at the Vikings 5.

On the next snap, however, the fumbled snap of the last Oilers series nearly

came back to haunt them only this time, the Oilers retained possession.

    However, it was now 4th

down with 6 yards to go. It meant the game. For thefinal play of the series, Jake Walker took the snap and pushed his way into the

endzone for the go-ahead TD. Walker also made the 2 point conversion for the

Oilers, and the lead switched hands at Oilers 24, Vikings 18.

But the Vikings were far from finished. On the ensuing kickoff, Julian Byrns

took the return to the Vikings 20 yard line. On the next play from scrimmage,

Viking Quarterback Tyler Creasman connected with Receiver David Shum over

the middle, who evaded several Oilers tackles to sprint down the right sideline

all the way to the Oilers 25 yard line. On the next play, Creasman lofted one for

Julian Byrns at the Oilers goal line, but the pass was broken up by Alex

On 2nd Down, however, the Vikings attempted another pass, but the ball sailed

past the receiver and into the waiting arms of Oilers Trent Fish. With only a few

seconds left in the game, the Oilers ran out the clock and concluded one of the

very best games of the season. Final score: Oilers 24, Vikings 18.

Oilers - 2010 SAFL World League Champions!!

As the regular World League season burned down to its conclusion, the

competition became tougher and fiercer with each down and kick. In several

cases, the outcome of the game was undecided until the last play. By the

regular season close, no one doubted that, on any given weekend, one team

could have emerged victorious over another.

At the end of the regular season, however, one team prevailed. The Oilers in

blue combined a creative Wildcat offense (direct snap to the running back) with

a tenacious 4-4 defense, to rack up an impressive 5 win to 1 loss record.

    Commissioners Corner

    Why do we do this?

As volunteers, in a challenging environment with many variables, we all

occasionally ask this question. Sometimes, the answer is not easy to come by!

This week, however, was different. Saturday night was a prime example of why

we do this. With less than a minute to play in that game, we still were in a

situation where we could have a three-way tie in the World League. It was an

excellent football game, and an outstanding effort by both teams. We seek

parity, and it's not an easy goal - especially in the SAFL, with so much change

year-to-year. I want to take this opportunity to thank the World League

coaches and all who worked so hard this season to get the teams ready to play

at their best. THIS is why we do this!

This coming week we have National and American playing Fri and Sat in

Singapore, and the World League Falcons travel to Seoul to play Yongsan Army

Base. Thursday, October 28 is the American playoff, and the National is set for

Friday 29th. Saturday, October 30 SAFL World League will host Kubasaki at the

Terror Club in Sembawang. This is the first time in many years we have had

the opportunity to play two non-SAFL games. Please make your plans now to

    attend.

SAFL Seniors Day (& Mother Appreciation!!)

Are rough and tumble football players man enough to hug their Moms and give

them flowers? Well, this question was answered during the SAFL Seniors Day

and Mother Appreciation Event held at SASs Turf Field on Saturday, 16 October

    at 6:30 pm.

From all four World League teams, Senior players were introduced to the crowd

and honored. These players included David Shum, Chris Hampton, Julian Byrns,

Tyler Creasman, Ryan Stakes, Sam Wright, Alex Wong, Jake Walker, Chris

These senior players then presented a single red rose to their mothers to

express their appreciation for all that these fabulous women do to support their

disagree with the fact that the SAFL could not function well without the support

of families, especially the mothers. The SAFL Newsletter Staff salutes theseniors on their great accomplishments both on and off the field, and to the

ASIA BOWL!! Saturday, 23 October at 2 pm (JV)and 6 pm (Varsity). Your Singapore Falcons versusThe Yongsan Falcons in Seoul, South Korea.

Editors Note: Portions of the following article have been repeated from last seasons Asia

Bowl write-up in order to give the entire 2010 SAFL readership some useful background

    on this amazing event.

    BACKGROUND

The Singapore Falcons game against the Seoul American High School (Yongsan)

Falcons this year is the continuation of a long tradition of inter-league football

    called the Asia Bowl.

In the late 70s and mid 80s, the SAFL started to play football against Jakarta

(the Durian Bowl) and Kuala Lumpur (the Rice Bowl). Later, two teams

emerged from the International School in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, and joined

the Singapore American Football League. KLs last season in the SAFL was 1989.

In 1990 the first real Asia Bowl took place. The Singapore Falcons (SAFL

traveling team) took on the Clark AFB HS team in the Philippines. Singapore

lost 7-6 on a broken play late in the fourth quarter.

The Asia Bowl then transferred to Korea in 1992. The Singapore Falcons team

played the Korean DOD All-star team composed of Seoul, Osan, and Daegu HS

players. This rivalry has continued without interruption, except for the 2007

game against ASIJ in Japan. Singapore sent both Varsity and JV squads to

Japan, and both Singapore teams were victorious.

In 2008s Asia Bowl, the Osan Cougars narrowly defeated the Singapore Falcons

by a score of 7-0, in Korea.

In 2009, your Singapore Falcons hosted a tough Osan Cougars squad in

Singapore, and emerged victorious 45 to 20. The opportunity to have

welcomed Osan High School to Singapore was very special. Hard work,

determination, a fighting spirit, but most of all good sportsmanshipcharacterized the 2009 Asia Bowl.

    MORE THAN JUST A GAME

The Singapore American Football League has, over the past 35 years and

continues today, contributed to these young player participants in many casesturning boys into young men. Playing in the heat and the humidity, these young

men learn to push through the pain and the exhaustion, to achieve something

far greater than personal self-achievement. To push themselves to their limits

for a greater goal and yet, at the same time discovering that they too have

benefited personally. They learn humility in victory and generosity in defeat,

leadership and sacrifice, discipline and good old fashioned hard work.

When the Falcons travel to Korea, they cease to think about the intra-league

rivalries between the Vikings and the Oilers, or between the Steelers and the

Bulldogs. They don the Green and White, and for a couple of weeks (Asia Bowl

on 23 Oct, and Pacific Bowl on 30 Oct), they are teammates and notcompetitors. The memories from this experience last forever.

Coach Jamie Matisin has witnessed this transformation of boys to young men in

Singapore for more than 30 seasons, and believes that the rigors of this

aggressive sport shape these players as no other sport can.

    THIS YEARS ASIA BOWL

In this years Asia Bowl, the Falcons will field two teams, JV and Varsity squads,

and square off with the Seoul American High School (Yongsan), a US

Department of Defense school in Korea. Yongsan is also known as the Falcons,

and this is guaranteed to be a hard-fought contest between two aggressive

football teams, one of whom is defending their home turf, and the other lookingto extend its Asia Bowl win streak.

The game will be held on Saturday, 23 October, with kickoff at 2:00 pm for the

Junior Varsity Team, and at 6:00 pm for the Varsity Team. This years Asia

Bowl will be played on the Yongsan Army Garrison located in Seoul, South

    Korea.

The Next Step in Athletics Guidance from NCSA(National Collegiate Scouting Association)

To the SAFL Community - As you know, we have been running articles provided

to us by NCSA (National Collegiate Scouting Association), who advises young

student athletes and their families how to approach college level sports and

athletic scholarships. This week, one of NCSA's senior recruiting coaches, Coach

Taylor, discusses all-important exposure to college coaches.

In Singapore, gaining such exposure to college coaches can be a challenge, but

Coach Taylor offers some good suggestions for increasing your chances to be

seen by university athletic programs. Although Singapore is "out of sight" for a

lot of U.S. athletic programs, one real plus for the SAFL is that everyone who

practices plays. And, everyone who plays winds up on a game DVD.

    - Newsletter Editor

A concerned parent asks: Coach Taylor, my son is currently a junior and his

coach will only play him on special teams. He has a few requests for film, but at

this point it is impossible because he will only play his seniors. Is his college

    football dream lost?

NO, your sons college football dream is not lost. It is possible to play in college

even if you dont contribute significantly on the high school team. For student-

athletes who are not playing for the high school team, it will be important tostart working with a select group of colleges on a personal level so they have

the opportunity to attend their camp and essentially try out for the university

over the summer. They can also start their college career at a junior college

level, earn playing time to showcase their talent and then transfer into a four

year school. Also, if your school plays a JV game on Saturdays, of all the

people who didnt play that Friday night, this is another opportunity to get some

    game footage of your student-athlete.

If you feel like you have the ability to play at the next level, but lack the

experience in high school to prove it, I suggest you take advantage of third

parties to alert college coaches about your desire and most importantly, be

realistic! In order to get realistic, talk to an expert who can give you an honest

idea of whether or not you have the ability needed to be introduced to college

I Bet You Didnt Know This About Football .

    The Last Dropkick

Flutie drop-kicked a PAT in New England's regular season finale on Jan. 1, 2006.

Believe it or not, the dropkick remains a legal maneuver in the National Football

League today. It still exists in the NFL's official rule book. Rule 3, Section 8

defines the dropkick as, "a kick by a kicker who drops the ball and kicks it as, or

immediately after, it touches the ground."

    https://recruitmatch.ncsasports.org/fasttrack/lead/preSAEF.do?pg=v2&lnkSrc=SAEFSACAChttps://recruitmatch.ncsasports.org/fasttrack/lead/preSAEF.do?pg=v2&lnkSrc=SAEFSACAChttps://recruitmatch.ncsasports.org/fasttrack/lead/preSAEF.do?pg=v2&lnkSrc=SAEFSACAC
  • 8/8/2019 SAFL 2010 Week 6 Newsletter

    29/36

Obviously, the New England Patriots were well aware of this fact. In the team's

2005 regular season finale against the Miami Dolphins, quarterback Doug Flutie

dropkicked an extra point following a 9-yard touchdown reception by wide

receiver Tim Dwight in the fourth quarter. Flutie's point-after-attempt was the

first drop kick converted in the NFL in more than six decades.

    Jim Thorpe

Some of the legends who've been permanently honored in the Pro Football Hall

of Fame were masters of the dropkick. Names like Jim Thorpe, Wilbur "Pete"

Henry, and Paddy Driscoll were known to have entertained pro football crowds

with their extraordinary talent of dropkicking. Albeit, some of their exploits were

exaggerated but nevertheless the dropkick was an integral part of the game in

the 1920s and 1930s. It was during this era that the football slightly resembled

a rugby ball. Numerous rule changes affecting the shape of the ball took place

during the early years of the NFL. Changes to the ball essentially ended by 1934

as it took its familiar shape of a prolate spheroid. As a result, the number of

dropkicks attempted in the NFL diminished significantly in subsequent years.

"As soon as they made the ball pointier, dropkicking went out of style. They

needed the ball to bounce and to bounce true," commented Bob Carroll, a

    leading football historian.

    Paddy Driscoll

In fact, it wasn't until 1963 that the league removed the category of dropkicked

field goals from the record book. Driscoll shared the two major records for

dropkicking when he booted four field goals (23, 18, 50 and 35 yards) for the

Chicago Cardinals in a 19-9 win over the Columbus Tigers on October 11, 1925.

That mark was equaled by the Kansas City Cowboys' Elbert Bloodgood. His four

dropkicked field goals were from 35, 32, 20, and 25 yards as Kansas City edged

the Duluth Eskimos, 12-7, on December 12, 1926.

  • 8/8/2019 SAFL 2010 Week 6 Newsletter

    30/36

Driscoll's 50-yarder was also an NFL best and matched the record-tying kick he

made one year earlier in a game against the Milwaukee Badgers on September

    28, 1924. The Cardinals defeated Milwaukee, 17-7.

Prior to Flutie drop-kicking the PAT on January 1, 2006, Ray McLean of the

Chicago Bears was the last player to successfully drop kick in the NFL. McLean

converted an extra point following Ken Kavanaugh's 42-yard fumble recovery

for a touchdown during the Bears' 37-9 win over the New York Giants in the

1941 NFL Championship Game. The drop kick came in the fourth quarter of the

title game played on December 21, 1941.

Hall of Famer Earl "Dutch" Clark is believed to be the last player to successfully

dropkick a field goal in the NFL. According to game accounts, he dropkicked a

17-yard field goal in the Detroit Lions 16-7 victory over the Chicago Cardinals

    on September 19, 1937.

Hall of Famer Dutch Clark was a master of the drop kick.

Dakota Wesleyean University's Mark Payne drop-kicked a 63-yard field goal on

Oct. 9, 1915 which still stands as the national collegiate record. The kick was

against Northern Normal in Aberdeen. The kick broke the record of 62 yards

held by Pat ODea from the University of Wisconsin. (source: Dakota Wesleyan

    University).
