Study Tour, 2018

For Final year BSc Microbiology

A study tour for the final year BSc Microbiology students was conducted

on 26th October 2018 to The Museum Of Anatomy And Pathology (MAP),Udupi

with 30 students and three faculties Ms. Smitha KV, Assistant professor in

Microbiology, Mr. Suvaneish Kumar, Assistant professor in Biotechnology and

Ms, Abitha V. Microbiology Lab Assistant of SAFI Institute of Advanced Study.

The visit was a remarkable experience and it was an insight to explore the human

nature and its anatomy.

The Museum of Anatomy and Pathology or MAP, is a popular tourist

attraction. The Museum features human and animal specimens and is considered

to be the largest of its kind in Asia. There are about 3000 samples of organs and

other parts of human or animal anatomy including the skulls of an elephant and a

whale and a long skeleton of a King Cobra. The museum houses well preserved

skeletons of various animals. There are carefully crafted models and charts to go

along with them for the benefit of the visitors. It was a very well made museum

showing interesting specimens. Great place to study anatomy as everything was

clearly displayed; both physiological and pathophysiological systems were

exhibited. We spent nearly 3 hours there, our mentor guided us though out the

journey in the museum and explained us all the models, specimens and charts

which were displayed there. It was a remarkable and informative experience

which a Life Science student should experience in his lifetime.

Field visit to study

Organic farming, Vermicomposting and Biogas plant

The students of the second year BSc. Microbiology of SAFI Institute of Advanced

Study visited Mr. Eliyas farm on 29th November, 2018 who were accompanied by two teachers

Ms. Shainy N.K. (Class Advisor, Assistant Professor in Microbiology) and Ms. Farha Baramy

(HOD, Department of Microbiology).

We were welcomed warmly to his farm. Mr. Eliyas was an established farmer and he

was also awarded with many awards in his field like the ‘ Karshakashri award’. He was very

happy to see the enthusiasm of the students and cleared all the doubts and encouraged the

students and teachers to ask questions. First he showed us the organic farming methods in

which he explained us about the manure used, its composition and the methodology of seeding

and planting. He had a wide variety of vegetables fruits and also cereals. Apart from farming

he also keeps great interest in the new techniques of plant breeding. He also gave some

seedlings to the much interested students.

Then we visited the vermicomposting plant. The vermicomposting plant had all the

organic materials from his household wastes, agricultural land, and cow dung from his cattle

farm were dumped into a well cemented pit. There were tiny showers fitted on the top the pit

to give required moisture for decomposition. He used special variety of earthworms which were

small in size. The earthworms from the previous batches are collected and again added to the

new batch. He explained us the process of vermicomposting and how he recollects the

earthworm after the whole process, the time it takes for the decomposition to take place and

what are the waste materials which gets decomposed faster and which takes time to decompose.

The importance of the cowdung in decomposition, how can we make vermicomposting

possible at our homes etc.

After that we visited his cattle farm near to which a biogas plant was set up in which he

uses the cowdung and the kitchen wastes. The biogas produced from the plant was used for the

household purposes itself. He also has a small scale milk processing and packaging unit were

he packets the milk and distributes it to the near by neighbourhood. It was an amazing trip to

remember and very informative. We were overwhelmed to meet such a great personality and

learn a lot of things.

Installation of Bio-pedestal Composting unit

The Department of Microbiology is overwhelmed because we got the

opportunity to introduce a best practice into the campus, ie, to manage wastes with the help of

a composting unit. The composting process is currently viewed as the primary waste

management method to stabilize organic wastes such as manure, yard trimmings, organic

wastes, kitchen wates etc. the stabilized end product which is the compost can be utilized as a

soil amendment to improve soil structure, provide plant nutrients and facilitate the revegetation

of disturbed or eroded soil.

The Bio-pedestal was installed on the 10th of December 2018 behind the

canteen area to manage the wastes in the canteen. The Biopdestral unit requires the following

materials, PVC pipe which has 8 inches in diameter and 1 metre in length, a plastic or a ferro

lid which can close the open end of the pipe. For the Installation of the Biopedestal, dig a pit

of nearly 30 cm in depth and then carefully place a pipe and then fill the pit with earth keeping

the pipe portion inside. The open end of the pipe should be closed with a lid. To the biopedestal

we can add in any type of bio- wastes, occasionally sprinkling it with cow dung slurry to

improve its degradation process. The bio-wastes gets degraded in the vessel and then gets

settled to the bottom of the tube and some of it may leach into the surrounding soil.

We would like to thank our principal Dr. PV Basheer Ahammed and Col.

Nisar Seethi, SIAS Chief Admistrative

officer for giving encouragement and

support for the fulfillment of this project.

Col. Nisar Seethi, showed great

enthusiasm and also acknowledged the

students for the great initiative taken. He

also asked the students to spread the

message to friends, family and the society

to manage the wastes in their area. We

would also like to express our gratitude to Mr. Kumar, Mr. Musthafa, Mr Haque, Mr. Kareem

and Mr. Junaid for extending help and support wholeheartedly.

Awareness Campaign On Nipah Virus

Nipah virus infection is a viral infection caused by the Nipah virus. As of 2018 there is

no vaccine or specific treatment. Prevention is by avoiding exposure to bats and sick pigs and

not drinking raw date palm sap. As of May 2018 about 700 human cases of Nipah virus are

estimated to have occurred and 50 to 75 percent of those who were infected died.

The Kerala Health and Family Welfare Department has put out a notice asking people to take

necessary precautions ahead of the Nipah transmission season beginning from December till

about June. On 19 May 2018, the Nipah virus broke out in Permabra town of Kozhikode in

Kerala. The virus resulted in the deaths of 19 people over the period of its outbreak. The virus

which is said to be caused by fruit bats, put the entire state on high alert with thousands being

quarantined to check for symptoms. Direct contact with infected pigs, other infected animals,

or through contaminated fruits (half-eaten fruits left by fruit bats), and even direct contact with

sick persons have been cited as the underlying cause of outbreaks.

Currently there is no effective treatment for Nipah virus infection. The treatment is

limited to supportive care. With this in mind the Students of the department of Microbiology

conducted an Awareness campaign on Nipah virus in the area of Vazhayoor Panchayath on 5th

February, 2019. The 60 selected students distributed pamphlets in various areas of Vazhayoor,

which included houses, shops, schools and anganvadees. The students gave a brief description

about the disease its transmission and prevention strategies.

Instructions by the Kerala government to the public:

1. Do not eat fruits bitten by bats.

2. Consume all fruits and vegetables after properly washing them.

3. Use a mask if you have a cough.

4. Those suffering from cough are also directed to use a towel and cover their mouth whenever

they step outside the house or interact with other family members inside the house.

local public.

H1N1 was one among the disease spreading fast around the world, so the World Health

Organization called it a pandemic. Since then, people have continued to get sick from swine

flu, but not as many. While swine flu isn't as scary as it seemed a few years ago, it's still

important to protect ourself from getting it. Like seasonal flu, it can cause more serious health

problems for some people. The best bet is to get a flu vaccine, or flu shot, every year. Swine

flu is one of the viruses included in the vaccine.

Symptoms generally seen are flu like symptoms, like cough, runny nose, fever, body

aches, headaches, chills, fatigue etc. People who have it can spread it one day before they have

any symptoms and as many as 7 days after they get sick. Kids can be contagious for as long as

10 days. Like the regular flu, swine flu can lead to more serious problems including pneumonia,

a lung infection, and other breathing problems. And it can make an illness like diabetes or

asthma worse.

The Students distributed pamphlets to houses, Schools, shops and Anganvadees, which

included the preventive measures and the caution to be taken to prevent the disease from

occurring. The students explained about the diseases and measures to be taken. The whole

programme motivated the students to know about the disease and also brought in the self-

confidence and the sense to serve the society.

Field Visit to MNR Grape Garden,

Theni District, Tamil Nadu

The students of the Second year BSc. Microbiology had the opportunity

to visit the grape garden, at Theni, Tamil Nadu on the 3rd of February,2019. There were 28

students and two faculties, Ms. Farha Baramy (HOD, Dept. of Microbiology) and Ms. Nazreen

(Dept. of Statistics). The visit helped the students to know more about the growth of the grapes

its cultivation, environmental conditions, manufacture and distribution. Wine is an alcoholic

drink made from fermented grapes. Yeast consumes the sugar in the grapes and converts it to

ethanol, carbon dioxide, and heat. Different varieties of grapes and strains of yeasts produce

different styles of wine. These variations result from the complex interactions between the

biochemical development of the grape, the reactions involved in fermentation and the

production process. Many countries enact legal appellations intended to define styles and

qualities of wine. These typically restrict the geographical origin and permitted varieties of

grapes, as well as other aspects of wine production. Wines not made from grapes include rice

wine and fruit wines such as plum, cherry, pomegranate, currant and elderberry.

There were samples of Wines of different types which were for sale. It

included Sparkling wines, Table wine, Alcoholic and Non- alcoholic wines, white wines and

red wines etc. Apart from the wines there were fruit juices too. The whole experience was very

informative and treat to the eye.
