Fire Safety at Baggage Hall

Safety Alert 03/12 SSBC

2 November 2012

This Safety Alert serves to inform the airport community about a baggage fire incident that occurred recently at the Baggage Hall in Terminal 1. The fire originated from a piece of baggage held at the Early Bag Storage of the Baggage Handling System. Upon receiving fire signal generated by the automatic fire detection system, the fire was put out by airport staff responding to the incident.

Whilst the cause of the fire is unknown and yet to be determined by the Fire Services Department, it is important that all staff working in the Baggage Hall are reminded to stay vigilant of the fire safety at the Baggage Hall.

Staff working at the Baggage Hall should familiarize themselves with the fire instructions and observe the fire safety precautions below: Fire instructions:

• If you discover a fire : o Break the nearest fire alarm call point; o Call Integrated Airport Centre (lAC) at 2181 811 0; o Alert others in your area; o Don't tackle the fire unless you are trained and it is safe to do so; o Evacuate immediately to the Fire Assembly Point; o Report to your supervisor or the AA Fire Evacuation Coordinator at the Fire

Assembly Point.

• If you hear a fire alarm : o Evacuate immediately to the Fire Assembly Point; o Report to your supervisor or the AA Fire Evacuation Coordinator at the Fire

Assembly Point.

Fire safety precautions:

• Do not smoke inside the Baggage Hall ; • Do not place combustibles close to any heat sources; • Do not obstruct fire fighting equipment; • Do not obstruct fire exit doors; • Familiarize yourself with the location of fire fighting equipment.
