• Get plenty of rest: 7-9 hours sleep best• Maintain proper posture: Keep spine

straight and head up if sitting for a long time. Sit well back in your seat.

• Exercise regularly: Exercise for at least 30 minutes 3-4 times per week.

Strengthen Your Back• A strong healthy back is important for preventing injuries

while lifting and moving patients and objects.• Start with these suggested exercises lying on the floor

with your knees bent:– Pelvic Tilt: Squeeze buttocks together, pull in

abdomen and count to five.– Knee Raise: Using your arms, pull one knee to your

chest--then lower to starting position. (20 repetitions with each leg)

– Knee-Chest Raise: Using your arms, slowly pull one knee to your chest. Raise your chest and shoulders, touching your nose to your knee, and count to 5 (5 repetitions with each leg).

General Principles of Body Mechanics• ASK FOR HELP!• Push when possible• Use your strongest muscles: Leg

muscles if possible.• Keep your Balance:• Avoid twisting and lifting at the same

time.• Wear tennis shoes if possible. (Get firm

footing)• Avoid jerky motions while lifting.

• Hold person or object close to the body.

PREVENT FALLING ACCIDENTS

•Pick up everything spilled or dropped on floors. Liquids, paper, even flower petals can be dangerous.

•Pull wheeled vehicles through doorway so you can lead the way to see where you are going.

•Use a stepladder for out-of-reach things. Chairs, crates and other makeshifts cause trouble.

•Watch your step: Don’t read while walking don’t obstruct your vision with high loads.

•Use handrails for extra support when going up and down stairs.•Keep carts out of the way so they won’t create obstacles to others.•Wear sensible shoes with non-skid soles and moderate height rubber heels. (tennis shoes recommended)•Never, under any circumstances leave articles on stairs or in a passageway.

Smoking Policy

• Smoking not allowed in the building.• Smoking is designated to outside

areas.– Patients: outside ASU at ramp.– Staff: at rear of hospital near

generators and North/West parking deck, bottom floor. (near Oaks)

• Smoking is a major fire hazard.
