1 Introduction
The multi-beam-light-grid SLG422/425I-P is an opto-electronical safety-device for safeguarding dangerspots against accidental access.
- EU-Machinery directive no. 98/37
2 Safety Functions
Safety light grid SLG 422/ 425I-P
(3) The safety light grid was tested and approved by the EU notified corporation of TÜV Nord. The compliance with the European Union regulations was confirmed (see EC-Declaration of conformity).
3.1 Basic Information
The Safety light grid SLG 422/ 425I-P is a self-checking electro-sensitive protective system based on infrared light. The system is offered in two variants:
SLG 422PSLG 425IP
The system can be used for
- Safeguarding of danger zones - Safeguarding of access areas- Automatic material transport
3.2 Features
The system is composed of a transmitting-/receiving-unit and a reflection-mirror. No additional switching elements are required for the functions described. A comfortable software program for diagnosis and function selection is available. For this purpose a BUS-Converter NSR-0801 is available (see Accessories).
The SLG 422/425IP grids provides following properties:
- start interlock- restart interlock- relay monitoring EDM (only 422P)- muting (only 425IP)
3.3 Safety Functions
The SLG 422/ 425I-P System without accessories offers a great variety of functions. The following table shows the possible functions and the system configuration of the factory settings.
3.3.1 Start interlock
The start interlock prevents an automatic machine start after power ON.After release of the start interlock by a single interrupt of the detection zone this protection function will beinactive until the next voltage reset. When delivered the start interlock is not active. This function can be activated using the BUS-Converter NSR-0801 and a PC / Laptop (see manual NSR-0801).
3.3.1.1 Automatic mode (Automatic start after release of detection zone)
The Automatic mode function switches the OSSD outputs ON (detection zone not interrupted) without external release of a switching device. This mode of operation must be selected in combination with the restartinterlock of the machine. This degree of protection initiates an automatic restart of the machine while the protective zone is not interrupted. Do not select this operation mode when operators can pass through the protective zone.
This operation mode can be selected via cable link between the connections DIAG OUT and Release.
DIAG OUT

serious injury or death.
3.3.2 Restart Interlock
The Restart Interlock prevents an automatic release of the outputs (OSSDs ON) after feeding in the linevoltage or after an interruption of the protective zone. The system switches the output back to ON, if an external device (restart button) creates a release signal on theinput Restart (receiver).
Page 2 Subject to technical changes
! WarningWhen this mode is selected, operators or maintenance workers may enter the danger area without detection. Take care by the control system of the machine that restart interlock is always active. Failure to do so may result in

3 Description
Note:In the delivery package the restart interlock is not active. You must select this degree of protection (Wiring see chapter 4.3), or else the OSSD outputs will not be released. If no degree of protection has been selected, the status indication of the LEDs in the receiver will produce the following signal:
Activating the Restart Interlock
This operating mode can be selected via a cable wiring between the connections DIAG OUT and DIAG in.
DIAG OUT
DIAG IN
The electrical connection is described in the chapter Wiring diagram.
3.3.4 Relay monitoring (EDM)
This function monitors the triggered switch elements (auxiliary relay contacts) of the two outputs after each interruption of the detection zone and before the restart (release) of the outputs. This helps to recognize defective functions of the relays, e.g. smoldering of the contacts, rupture of the relay spring.
If the light curtain detects a defective function of the switch elements the outputs will be locked, i.e. a powerreset must be carried out after the correction.
When delivered, the relay monitoring function is not activated. This function can be activated using aBUS converter NSR-0801, software >4.0 and a PC/Laptop. How to connect the cables is described in chapter wiring diagram.
3.3.3 Testing
Test after Power ON
After switching Power ON, the system carries out a complete self and safety test within 2 seconds. If the detection zone is uninterrupted, the system switches to ON.If an error occurs, the outputs at the receiver will not switch ON. The OSSD OFF LED will flash to signal an error message. For further information please refer to chapter 7.2 Error diagnosis.
Permanent self test
In the background, the system checks all safety functions within the cycle time. This time includes a check of all functional components and a complete memory test.

4.1 Installation requirements
4.1.1 Detection zone and approach
The protective field of the SLG 422/ 425I-P is 500 mm. The output and input of the beam is shown in the dimensioned drawing. Install additional protective structures to make sure that the detection zone must be passed in order to reach dangerous machine parts.
Install SLG 422/ 425I-P in a way that users operating dangerous machine parts will always remain within the detection zone of the safety device.
4.1.2 Alignment of transmitter and receiver
Procedure:
1. The transreceiver must be arranged parallel to the reflection mirror and on the same height.
2. Turn the transreceiver, watching the diagnosis window of the transreceiver and fix the point, when the OSSD ON LED (green) flashes up and the LED Signal reception (orange) goes out.
3. Determine the max. left and right torsion angle and fix the fastening screws in center position. Check that the Signal reception LED does not flash.
4.1.3 Safety distance determination
Safeguarding of access areas with SLG 422/ 425I-P
S = Safety distance
mechanical protection
The safety distance is the minimum distance between SLG 422/ 425I-P and dangerous machine parts that has tobe kept to prevent access to the danger spot before the dangerous movement has stopped. The following equations and calculation examples refer to vertical adjustment of the safety light-curtainto the danger spot.
Calculation of the safety distance according to EN 999 and EN 294
The following factors are decisive when determining the safety distance:
- Machine after-running time (determined by measuring the after-running time)- Response time of machine and safety light grid (entire protective gear)- Approach speed- Resolution of the safety light grid

The Muting function is an integrated operating mode of the safety light grid SLG 425I-P.
The Muting function is only applicable for automatic material transport to secure access points of a danger zone. The material passes the access area across the protective field of the light grid without turning the outputs off.
Do not use this function for other purposes. We accept no liability for any application other than the intended use. We accept no liability due to non-observance of the subsequently described assembly and safetyinstructions and parameter adjustments.
This document contains information about the inteded bridging of the protective field of an AOPD and is reserved for people with the necessary specialised knowlege. Users of this document must be able to judge the hazards in connection with this mode of operation. The document does, however, not communicate the entire range of specialised knowledge required for the use of this operating mode. It is essential that all pertinent orders of authorities and legal regulations are complied with.

Muting sensor: Sensor for unambiguous material identificationMuting lamp: The muting lamp signals the muting statusOverride: The function enables a material transport after an unplanned stop of the muting
cylceConveyor stop: The muting runtime is interrupted while the signal Conveyor stop is activated.
- The bridging function aims at clearly differentiating between material and people in front of the danger zone. For this purpose 2 or 4 additional sensors must be connected depending on the intended use.
- The connection and the assembly of all components must be realised by specialists who are trained inelectronics and who know the appropriate safety regulations.
- Testing and initiation by competent experienced people who have the required specialised knowledge, especially of all pertinent legal and official regulations.
- Introduction and training by a specialist for the operators of the application.
After connection and assembly by a specialist please make sure that the following instructions are being observed:
- Arrangement of the sensors according to the instructions. It must be prevented that the muting function is started by unintentional interruption of the danger zone by any person stepping into the danger zone. The sensors mustbe arranged in a way that normal approach, eg. the movement of a foot, leg, hand or arm will not trigger the muting function.- The selection of the operating parameters, e.g. simultaneousness, muting duration, operating mode, special functions, etc. must be adjusted to the application, for example termination of the muting cycle after passing through the protective field.- The muting cycle must start automatically upon release by the control switch and be controlled by atleast 2 independent signals (sensors).- The control switch for the release and the override fuction must be arranged in a way that the entiredanger zone can be monitored. Be sure they are mounted in a way that they cannot be activated from within the danger zone.- The status of the muting function must be signalled by a muting light (see chapt. 5.5.2).

5.1 Intended use
5.5.1 Muting sensors MS
The muting sensor MS can be a mechanic, capacative, inductive or opto-electronic sensor. There is no specific requirement concerning error protection. The arrangement must be secured against manipulation. If reflexion light barriers are used we recommend to install sensors and reflectors in
to use a dark-switched type. (sensor dimmed = output 24 V/DC)
entire length without interruptions. The sensors must detect the material, not the means of transportation.
Make sure that the sensor distance is not too large, so that all activated muting sensors are dimmed by the passing material during a cycle. Simultaneousness (max. 3 sec) of the switch outputs must be taken into consideration.A new muting procedure can start as soon as the previous process is finished (sensors not dimmed).A safety distance of at least 50 mm (conveyor speed V < 2.0 m/s) to the protective field is required to ensure proper signal evaluation by the control unit.

Installation of the muting sensors
If 4 muting sensors are used the outputs of the sensors MS1 and MS3 and MS2 and MS4 must be connected in parallel. MS1 and MS3 are connected to the sensor connector plate at input MS1. Connect MS4 and MS2 to input MS2.
Connection of the sensors - 2 muting sensors
- 4 muting sensors
When arranging the muting sensors make sure that unintentional intrusion of a person into the danger zone is not possible. The distance and the height of the muting sensors must be appropriate for clear differentiation between material and person.
The wiring layout of the muting sensors to the AOPD must exclude cross circuiting due to defect cables.

When you have properly connected the muting application and the NSR-0801, select the following parameter settings according to your intended application in the menu option Muting Function of your PC software.
First please select the operating mode and the transport direction with the mouse pointer (arrangement and number of muting sensors).
- Muting with 2 sensors, diagonal arrangementMuting mit 2 diagonally mounted muting sensorsTransport direction: Material transport in two directions (default) Selectable options: Conveyor stop, muting cycle shortened, override, protective field range
- Muting with 2 sensors, parallel arrangementMuting with 2 muting sensors; Attention! Do not mount the muting sensors outside of the danger zone!Transport direction: out of the danger zone, muting cycle shortened (default). Selectable options: Conveyor stop, override, protective field range
- Muting with 4 sensors, parallel arrangementMuting with 2 muting sensors each, symmetrical arrangement in front of and after the protective field of the SLG 420. Transport direction: Material transport selectable in both directionsSelectable options: Conveyor stop, muting cycle shortened, override, protective field range
5.9.1 Muting cycle duration
The muting cycle duration is the time between activation and termination of the material tansport into or out of the danger zone. The muting cycle duration depends on the length of the material, the conveyor speed and the arrangement of the sensors. The duration setting must comprise one complete muting cycle (release of all sensors). A newmuting cycle can only be started when all sensors are released (no dimming).
The muting cycle duration can be set between a few second and many hours. Longer muting cycle durations can be generate a dangerous operating situation.Consider variations of conveyor speed, position and length of the material when setting the muting cycle duration.
5.9.2 Simultaneouness of the sensors
The time range between the 1st and the 2nd muting sensor is monitored. Thus a symmetrically shaped body can be differentiated clearly from other time ranges (intrusion of a person) by an appropriate arrangement of the muting sensors. The simultaneouness setting should take variations of the conveyor speed, position and length of the material into consideration.
Simultaneouness of the sensors can be set between 1 and 3 seconds.
Page 10 Subject to technical changes
5.9 Operating mode and transport direction
5.8 Setting for muting operation
Safety light grid SLG 422/ 425I-P
We recommend the setting of the following special functions. Thus you will increase the protective function and the availability of the muting application.
5.9.3 Restart Interlock
The restart interlock prevents automatic conveyor start after voltage interruption or material jam. The restart interlock must be wired according to the wiring diagram on page 17. When delivered the function is activated. The control switch must be installed outside of the danger zone so that the zone can be monitored from all sides. The control switch must be activated after each voltage or protective field interruption or when an error in the muting cycle occurs. Release is only possible when none of the sensors is dimmed. A status LED on the receiver indicates when the control switch must be activated.
The function can be deactivated with the mouse pointer. In this case the user must ensure this function with his application.
Attention !Deactivating the restart interlock may start an automatic muting cycle. People can now step into the danger zone and people in the danger zone may be severely injured!
5.9.4 Conveyor stop
The function can extend the muting cycle duration in case of an unintentional conveyor stop or material jam and thus prevent overflow. The muting function can be prolonged unit the interruption has been removed. Afterwards the normal muting cycle can continue as specified.
The Conveyor stop input is provided as signal from the machine control. If the function is activated, a signal of+ 24 V/DC must be connected in non-operative state. A change of state of the muting sensors (switchoutput) while the function is active switches the muting function off.
When delivered the function is not activated. The conveyor stop time can be set between 1 and 30 minutes. For applications with very long muting cycle duration the conveyor stop time can be prolonged by max. 18 hours.
5.9.5 Muting cycle shortened
A normal muting cycle is terminated by a muting sensor as follows:
- Muting with 2 sensors, diagonal arrangement, after release of sensor MS 2 - Muting with 4 sensors, parallel arrangement, after release of sensor MS 3
A very long muting cycle duration produces a time window with bridged protective field, during which the object is between the protective field and the muting sensor MS2/MS 3.
Activating the function means shortening the muting cycle. The bridging is terminated as soon as the material has passed the protective field of SLG 425IP (protective field free).
The function is always active in an application with 2 muting sensors in parallel arrangement. In an application with 2 diagonal sensors or 4 parallel sensors the function can be activated using the mouse pointer.
A new muting cycle can only be started when none of the muting sensors are dimmed.
5.9.6 Override
Use this function to bridge the outputs of the SLG 422/425I-P in case of an interrupt (voltage interrupt, material jam). The function has a time restriction and is expressly intended for the removal of the material jam (muting sensor or protective field dimmed).
When this function is activated the control switch can be used (release restart interlock) to start a material transport. The control switch can be activated switching ON-OFF-ON. The time sequence for the start (ON-OFF-ON) with a minimum duration of 100 ms up to a maximum duration of 1.5 sec must be taken into consideration. The Conveyor stops as soon as the material jam has been removed (protective field and muting sensors no longer dimmed. To start a new muting cycle you must release the restart interlock by activating the same control switch once (ON-OFF).The muting light blinks (2 Hz) to signal the interruption of the muting cycle. When delivered the function is not activated.

5.9.7 Multiple break of protective field during muting cycle
This function increases the systems' availability for variable goods on a pallet. During the active muting cycle theprotective field is guarded and leads to an immediate stop of the muting cycle when no beam is interrupted. This malfunction is triggered, i.e. when the means of conveyance with an irregular load of material does not dampall active beams of the protective field for a time longer than 20 ms.
If this function is activated, no break of the muting cycle will occur due to non-damping the beams. The functionallybreak is being realised by the respective configuration and as the case may be by the muting sensors.Combining the parameters with ' shortened muting cycle' is not possible. Those kind of restrictions will be indicated by the software's pop-up-windows.
After a new configuration the information are prepared for storage by activating the button
To prevent unintentional storage of the information, every intended storage processs must be confirmed byclicking an additional button
within 10 seconds. If you click this button within the given period, the new configuration will be transmitted tothe safety light grid SLG 425I-P. If you fail to press the button within the requested time, the information will be cancelled and the settings ofbefore your change will be stored.
After the data transmission the following confirmation appears. At the same time you will be asked to save the configuration data as text file.
We urgently recommend to do so. At a later time you will thus be able to trace the configuration changes. Click on the button (Ja / Yes) with the mouse pointer. Now you can save the configuration settings on your PC/laptop.

Minimum distances of muting sensors
A mimimum distance for the muting sensors is required that the control unit of the AOPD can evaluate the signals.
The signal length between the sensors closest to the AOPD must not be at less than 50 ms. This corresponds to a minimum distance of 100 mm at a conveyor speed of 2.0 m/s.
The minimum signal length of the outer sensors must be greater than 50 ms. The signal run time between the muting sensors must not exceed 3 seconds.
The assembly distance of the inner sensors to the protective field of the SLG 425IP should be as low as possible.
The sensors (emitter/receiver) of the SLG 425IP must be fixed as close as possible to the transported material to prevent gaps. Otherwise there is a risk of people getting between material and arrangement of the MSduring the muting cycle.
If you work with different material dimensions (width) make sure to protect the gap between the sensors (emitter/receiver) with an additional cover.

7 Testing and Initiation
7.1 Check list
Prior to initiation of SLG 422/425I-P all of the following check list items have to be verified by the responsible person.
Check the wiring before the initiation:
1. The power supply is only connected to SLG 422/ 425 IP .
2. The power supply unit is a 24V/DC power supply unit fulfilling the regulations of the EEC, the Low Voltage Directive and the product standard (IEC 61496).
3. The polarity of the power supply is not reversed.
4. The connection cable is properly connected to the transreceiver.
5. The double insulation is provided between the light grid output and a hazard potential.
6. The outputs OSSD1 and OSSD2 are not shorted to +24 V/DC.
7. The connected switch elements (load) are not shorted to 24V/DC.
Switch the SLG 422/ 425 IP on and test its functionality as follows:
2 seconds after power ON (when the detection zone is unobstructed) the system starts to operateproperly. The outputs are released.
7.2 Troubleshooting
After power ON and release of the detection zone the light grid runs an internal self test. If an erroroccurs, the OSSD OUT (red) LED of the receiver flashes in a special flicker pattern. Every error message is followed by a interval of one second.
LED OSSD OFF Continual flash OSSD OFF and LED Restart 1 x flash2 x flash
3 x flash
4 x flash
5 x flash
6 x flash
7.3 Diagnostic operation
This mode of operation is automatically activated after Power Reset, if the BUS Converter NSR-0801 is connected to the receiver or transmitter. How to connect the BUS converter is described in the NSR-0801 operating manual. When diagnostic operation is active, the OSSD ON and OSSD OFF LEDs of the receiver flash. In diagnostic operation Normal Mode function is not possible. Therefore the output OSSDs are interlocked. The system will automatically switch from diagnostic operation to normal mode function as soon as the BUS converteris no longer integrated and the extension cord of the sensor is connected again.
