• New Rules will mandate, for Part.21 certified aeronautical Organizations, the establishment of a"Safety Management System“, fostering a new seed for a “Safety Collaborative Environment”(ICAO Annex 19, ICAO Doc 9859, EASA Opinion No 04/2020)
• The potential of this incredibly huge Network of competences is immense and able torevolutionize the approach to Safety
• Since 2018 this potential revolution in the Aeronautical World was caught in LHD, being fully inline with our strategic vision: Safety in Operations as a key driver of our future
• But an immediate necessity becomes apparent: how to manage this change. How to be ready forthe new environment and to exploit all the relationships and the interfaces that this opportunityis presenting
• In 2019 a new Function: the “Safety Systems Governance (SSG)” is established reporting to MD
• Internal, External and Statutory safety contexts are inside its perimeter
• The new SSG Function is founded on its own pillars taking care of the major internal andexternal interfaces and a functional “network of internal and external safety partners”: a360°way to perceive safety

Safety Management Systemenforces company capability to identify, face and prevent, in a proactive-
bottom up way, the safety risks in a logic of continuous improvement
(measure of the effectiveness), addressing weak signals before they lead
to accidents/incidents
Vision and ModelsAny SMS shall fit for purpose the structure of the Organization.
LHD is an extremely complex reality with many Functions where
an SMS will be required and working interactively in an Integrated
Environment.
The A-SMS Manual addresses in a single view all the

ISPI software for product improvementCustomer Service ISPI softwareprovides a relevant data base ofOccurrence Reporting (OR):
• In general OR are related to manydifferent issues which are not unsafe, even if the P/N affected is a critical part.
• Anyway recurrent events may suggestthat true usage is not compliant withdesign assumption and should befurther investigated.
• Within the LHD Digitalization Project wecould have a reliable download ofconfiguration data from SAP which wascross referenced with ISPI data base topoint out which component subject ofrecurrent OR are also Critical Parts (CS29.602)

• CNSAS (Corpo Nazionale Soccorso Alpino e Speleologico) is the Italian Search & Rescue Alpine Organization: its personnel is involved inevery Italian HEMS mission in hostile environment
• Thanks to the huge experience acquired among Italian territory, CNSAS developed an independent obstacles map database with themain scope to improve situational awareness during HEMS flights. This database is used and validated during every CNSAS mission (notonly HEMS), and updated if new obstacles are discovered or no more in place.
• Even if CNSAS obstacle map is not an Aeronautic obstacle database (DO-200 not approved), it has the huge benefit of beingcontinuously updated (potentially, after every SAR mission) and for this reason it is used as “no credit” situational awareness tool.
• LHD already tested the CNSAS obstacle map signal input on AW139 and AW169 RIGs. The preliminary outcome was positive and showeda good resolution compatibility and frame rate update on AW169 MFD and AW139 5th Display.

Company General UseNikolsky Lecture 2021 “Rotorcraft Design: The Crucial Influence of Safety from Concept to Fleet Support.” by Nannoni Fabio
• Helicopter operate close to the ground and in congested and hostileenvironments. Still today, too many CFIT cases occur during flights in lowvisibility or in region with complex orography
• Often the "Public Utility" or EMS services are hindered by the meteorologicalconditions preventing the execution of these life-critical missions
• Our vision to solve these essential issues is to support the migration ofhelicopter operations from the today preponderant VFR mode to a dedicatedand safer ”low altitude” IFR standard
• To foster this strategy LHD developed its own “long term safety path” targetedto exploit the Performance Based Navigation (PBN) Technologies:
AFCS, Avionic and sensors suites of all our latest Products, comply with the morestringent trends in Navigation and ATM and conform to RNP 0.3 standards (0.1 on going)As part of this “Safety Improvement Strategy”, we developed our own “FMS”Unique Rotorcraft OEM in the World, we are certified as “Air Navigation Data Provider”;so we can feed our FMS with our own Navigation Data PackageOur “PBN Safety Strategy” was complemented by the agreement signed with ENAV, theItalian Air Navigation Service Provider (ANSP) authorized to design and validate PBN flightproceduresAs LHD we can offer to Customers a "Complete Operational Solutions" tailored againsttheir own specific mission and granting the maximum safety, efficiency and effectiveness

THE ADVANCED SAFETY DATA MINING
• HUMS and on board recording systems are storing, during each single flight, gigabytes of data; monitoring thestatus and the working characteristics of the helicopter and the majority of its systems
• This enormous reservoir of information and the new emerging technologies for data mining and interpretation (AI,Big Data Analysis...), can offer a totally new perspective to monitor the usage of the machine and to synthesizeparameters highlighting anomalous phenomena or the achievement of limits; with a great impulse to Safety
• In collaboration with the Politecnico ofMilan we designed, tested and patented anovel, innovative algorithm to explore theHUMS data package and to identify themaneuvers performed by the aircraft inits operations
• The algorithm is based on an ArtificialIntelligence engine driving dedicated BigData analysis routines able to explore theentire HUMS Database, searching fordefined "Independent VariablesCombinations“ typical of a knownmaneuver
THE FUTURE OF THE HUMS

• By comparing the true operative spectrum with thedesign one, the actual used components life can bemonitored, both to avoid the removal of lessstressed parts or to drive the substitution ofcomponents that could reach an earlier retirement
• The accuracy demonstrated by this tool is very high, approaching 97%, a true first seed for a "ConditionBased Maintenance“
A NEW COLLABORATIVE SCENARIO
• Benefits are evident but their exploitation requires a"Collaborative Approach to Safety".OEMs, Authorities, Customers, Operators must betuned on the same wavelength
• Without a real open minded approach in the spirit of"Safety First", all these promising possibilities aredestined to remain on paper or in the drawers of thedesigners
