❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

1. SURVEY THE GIRLS IN YOUR TROOP.

Find out how many and what types of accidents and emergencies they, or people close to them, have had in the last two years. Discuss the following:

• Where did the accidents happen? Is there a pattern?

• What are some ways to help prevent accidents from happening in the future?

The following tasks are important and cover a great deal of information. It is suggested that they be completed as a group and that several people or teams be responsible for one topic. Research the topic and share the information with the rest of your troop. Do demonstrations, prepare safety charts or checklists for each member, or use other methods to teach the girls in your troop about the topic.

• Safety in the home: Identify ways to prevent accidents. Make a first aid kit. Explain the storage and use of dangerous cleaning material. Include other subjects that make a home safer.

• Sprains and fractures: Know the difference and how to treat each.

• Treating of simple wounds: Explain the difference between puncture wounds, lacerations, and abrasions. Know how to treat each. Learn the importance of tetanus shots.

• Prescription drugs: Know the proper use and storage of medications. Explain how prescribed medications can be, and are, abused.

• Head or neck injuries: Learn to recognize and care for these injuries. Demonstrate what precautions should be taken to transport someone with this type of injury.

Task 2Complete the following task.

2. INTERVIEW PEOPLE ON A LOCAL PARAMEDIC TEAM.

Ask them to explain what you should or should not do in an emergency situation until help arrives. Ask to tour one of their mobile units. Paramedic teams may be contacted through the local fire department or private companies.

3. ASK YOUR LEADER TO INVITE A NURSE FROM YOUR COMMUNITY TO TALK WITH YOUR TROOP ABOUT FIRST AID.

Discuss with them any problems you had with acting out the emergency situations in the “Others” section. If your leader does not know any nurses, they should check with the school, the VNA (Visiting Nurse Association) or the American Red Cross.

– OR –Visit a hospital emergency room.

Body BasicsComplete at least ONE of the following tasks.

❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ ❤ GIRL GUARDS

1. FIND OUT HOW THE BODY REACTS TO EXTREME HEAT OR COLD.

Demonstrate how to care for someone suffering from each.

2. KNOW THE SYMPTOMS OF DEHYDRATION.

Explain what steps to take to avoid dehydration.

1. NOW YOU HAVE AN OPPORTUNITY TO APPLY YOUR SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE.

The following are situations in which quick and efficient treatments are essential. Act out two of the situations. Change roles. Tell how to get help from professionals. Be creative and have fun while you learn. After acting out these scenarios and discussing each one, write your feelings about the importance of knowing first aid.

• You are driving with two friends on a deserted highway. On the side of the road you see a car that has hit a tree. Inside is an unconscious woman, leaning against the steering wheel. She is bleeding but you cannot tell from where. How will you help her?

• You and your sister are visiting your grandfather. Suddenly, he turns pale, grasps his chest as if in pain, and perspires heavily. He stops breathing. What would you do next?

• You have accepted a baby-sitting job next door to your home for a three-year-old boy. He is pretty active and “impossible” to watch all the time. You find him in the kitchen crying, with a half empty bottle of Lysol® in his hands. What would you do next?

• Your family is eating a big Sunday dinner. Dad eats too fast and always talks while he eats. Suddenly he starts choking. He turns pale and cannot talk. How are you going to help him?

2. PREPARE A FIRST AID KIT FOR THE CORPS VAN.

NOTE: For this task you will need band-aids and markers.

There are many things that can hurt people. Sometimes people are hurt by evil people like the robbers in a story Jesus told. Other times they are hurt because ordinary people do nothing to help them. Read Luke 10:29-37.

• How many people in the lesson walked past the injured man and pretended not to see him?

• Have you ever known someone was sick or hurting and pretended not to notice?

Make a list of people you know who are hurting.

Some may be sick or lonely. Others may be in situations that hurt them physically or emotionally. Write the names of each person on a band-aid

and pray for them. Stick the band-aid in a place where you will see them and be reminded to keep praying.

Think of a way to help at least one of the people you prayed for. Share your plan with your leader, corps officer, or another trusted adult.
