Over the past 20 years, latex exposure has increased due in part to the increasing use of gloves to protect against emerging infectious disease pathogens such as HIV, AIDS. Allergy to latex was �rst recognized in the late 1970s and since then, it has become a major health concern due to a signi�cant increase in number of healthcare workers who were a�ected.

Healthcare workers who frequently using latex gloves such as physicians, nurses, aides, dentists, dental hygienists, operating room employees, laboratory technicians, and hospital house-keeping personnel are at risk for developing latex allergy. Not only healthcare workers, latex-sensitive patients could be also a�ected by latex allergy.

There are three types of latex reactions:• Irritant contact dermatitis. The least threatening type of latex reaction, classi�ed as a non- allergenic skin reaction. It usually occurs as a result of repeated exposure to chemicals in latex gloves and results in dryness, itching, burning, scaling, and lesions of the skin. • Allergic contact dermatitis (type IV allergy). A delayed reaction to additives used in latex processing, which results in the same type of reactions as irritant contact dermatitis (dryness, itching, burning, scaling, and lesions of the skin), but the reaction is more severe, spreads to more parts of the body and lasts longer. • Immediate allergic reaction (type I allergy, latex hypersensitivity). The most serious reaction to latex. It can show up as rhinitis with hay fever-like symptoms, conjunctivitis, cramps, hives, and severe itching. It is rare, but symptoms may progress to include rapid heartbeat, tremors, chest pain, di�culty breathing, low blood pressure, anaphylactic shock, or potentially, death.

Dermatitis could increase the risk of infection for patients and healthcare workers. Skin cracks and �ssures are exposed to the increased risk of occupational exposure to the viruses as hepatitis B and C, HIV, other pathogens and transmission of contact organisms such as Staphylococcus aureus.
