Treasurer Des Brandon and HSENI Chief Executive, Keith Morrison 2015 was a terrific year for Northern Ireland Entrants in the All Ireland Safety Awards as 7 entrants win major category Awards. Special mention goes to Lagan Construction Group Ltd who won the Bronze Award beating off stiff competition from all over Ireland. “I’m still in shock after hearing we won the Bronze Award” said Nicola McCracken, Health & Safety Manager for Lagan. “It is a terrific testament to the work put in throughout the whole organisation to ensure we do everything possible to make sure our people are safe at work.” See inside for photos. CITB have unveiled twoadditions to their trainingresources

Firstly a newly refurbishedlecture theatre

Big enough to hold up to 100delegates the new lecturetheatre removes the need toarrange seats around thepillars as in the room wenormally use

Another big benefit is the largescreen with overheadprojection The theatre is alsokitted out for sound

Secondly CITB have invested ina new 360deg training pod This isthe first of its kind in Irelandand allows for 360deg training

Central to the unit is thecamera and software to stitchthe 360deg view together This

allows organisations to film intheir own location (using thecamera) and transpose thisinto the training pod

CITB should be congratulatedfor the foresight in investing in

this kit as itopens upnumerousopportunitiesfor the users

related offencesAt Dungannon Crown Court(121) Dale Farm Limited wasfined pound30000 plus costs ofpound2500 after pleading guilty tobreaches of health and safetylegislation

The case was brought by theHealth and Safety Executivefor Northern Ireland (HSENI)and relates to an incident on13 March 2013 where twoventilation engineers wereexposed to asbestos fibresduring extension work atDunmanbridge CreameryCookstown

The two engineers had notbeen provided with importantinformation on the location ofasbestos containing materialsat the site prior to workcommencing

An investigation by HSENIfound that Dale Farm Limitedhad an asbestos managementsurvey carried out 10 yearsprior to the incidentHowever an asbestosmanagement plan had notbeen developed in theintervening time nor had arefurbishmentdemolitionsurvey been undertakenbefore the extension workbegan Dale Farm Limited hadalso failed to update their

asbestos register to takeaccount of asbestos insulationboard (AIB) that wasdiscovered in 2007 in the areawhere the incident took place

After the hearing JonathanKnox an inspector withHSENIs Major InvestigationTeam said Asbestos exposureis the single greatest cause ofwork-related deaths inNorthern Ireland
