Objectives

• Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:– List the benefits of safe driving – Describe various accident factors – Outline accident prevention measures

Page 3: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Statistics• Nationally - 2015

– 40,000 fatalities • 110 deaths per day• 6% increase over 2015

– 2.2 million people injured– Traffic accidents claim more

lives than murders• Murder - 1 every 34 minutes• Traffic – 1 every 15 minutes• Every 6 seconds a crash occurs

– $60 billion in damages to US employers

• Average cost $16,500

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Preliminary data shows as many as 40,000 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2016 - a 6 percent increase over 2015 and a 14 percent increase over 2014. The report said it's the most dramatic two-year escalation since 1964, and shows that 2016 may have been the deadliest year on the nation's roads since 2007. A major reason for increased traffic congestion is our highway system has not kept pace with the growing demands. Since 1970 the number of drivers has increased by 64% while the budget to repair and build roadway systems has only increased by 6%. (NHTSA) Part of the increase can be contributed to the increase in the number of miles driven. According to NHTSA, job growth and low fuel prices during the past year were two factors that led to increased driving, including increased leisure driving and driving by young people.

Statistics • Arizona

– 950 fatalities• Average 2.6 people killed each day• One person was killed every 9.2 hours• 153 pedestrian fatalities

– Peak time for accidents: Friday between 4PM – 5PM• Daylight hour crashes accounted for 73.6% of all crashes

Presenter
Presentation Notes
(Arizona Motor Vehicle Department Vehicle Crash Facts Report) Arizona Fatalities - 30% were alcohol related 35% were speed related The 153 pedestrian fatalities rank AZ in top 10 nationwide. Tucson #4 in the Nation of red light running fatalities Phoenix #1 Mesa #2 Two years in a row

Costs Related to Motor Vehicle Accidents• Vehicle repair costs• Insurance Premiums• Loss productivity • Possible law suits• Negative publicity• On-the-job motor vehicle accidents cost

employers an average of $22,000 per crash

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The employer or individual will have to pay for repair cost of the vehicle. This may include the total cost of the insurance deductable. When you have a motor vehicle accident your insurance premiums will increase for the next few years. Injuries to the individual and loss of the vehicle may result in loss of productivity If you were at fault there is a good possibility there may be a law suit. If you are driving a company vehicle the company will be named in the law suit. They have the bigger pockets. Negative publicity – If you have a company logo on your vehicle and are involved in a major accident that logo will be shown on the nightly news. This is not the type of publicity the company is after.
Page 6: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Predictions• 1 in 15 drivers will be involved in

a collision during the next year. • 1 in 45 drivers will be involved in

an injury producing collision during the next year.

• 1 in 65 drivers will be involved in a fatal collision during their lifetime.

• Based on an average driver– 10,000 – 12,000 miles per year

Presenter
Presentation Notes
These were based on a survey by a nationwide auto insurance carrier. Based on 10,000 – 12,000 miles driven annually. The number of miles now is actually closer to 15,000 – 18,000 miles so these numbers will be higher.
Page 7: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Are You a Safe Driver?• 83% of drivers believe safety is a

concern• But a number stated they were

comfortable with:– Speeding – 64%– Texting – 47%– Impaired by marijuana – 13%– Impaired by alcohol – 10%

Report by National Safety Council

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Nationwide Insurance public opinion poll with its drivers. They asked drivers if they felt if they were a safe driver. 98% of the people felt they were a safe driver. They then asked additional questions such as do you eat, drink or talk on your cell phone while driving. Being distracted reduces your driving abilities. This will be talked about in more length on later slides.

Expected Consequences Influences Your Driving Habits

Presenter
Presentation Notes
People make millions of decisions daily. Some are more complex than others. Part of the decision making process is what are the consequence? What happens when you are driving I-10 and you see this sign? Most people view this as a suggestion. The actually drive 5 - 10 miles over the speed limit. When driving 75 down I-10 you will be continually past by other drivers. Why is that?
Page 9: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Expected Consequences Influences Your Driving Habits

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Now what does that 75 MPH sign means if you see these guys sitting on the side of the road? Your first reaction is to look down at your speedometer to see how fast your are going. You may also automatically hit your break petal to slow down. Why is that? The usual consequence of speeding is nothing. You drive over the speed limit on a regular basis and nothing has ever happened, so you continue to do it. Therefore there is little motivation to drive the limit and little affect on your behavior. But now the police with radar guns pointed at you increases the chance of getting a ticket. The consequence of speeding now is a ticket, points on your drivers license and/or spending a Saturday taking a safe drivers class. Rules alone won’t work because rules don’t make people do anything. It’s the consequence of those rules. It is the perceived level of risk for harm or negative consequences that drive our behavior. Now ask yourself “What’s the consequence of driving unsafely?” Get FEEDback from around the room.
Page 10: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Factors Unique to Arizona• Speed• Rural roads• Weather• Winter visitors• No formal vehicle inspection system

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The speed limit on I-10 is 75 MPH in rural areas and 65 MPH in city limits. The higher speed limit decreases reaction time, breaking distance and stopping time. High speed limits also results in more serious crashes. Rural roads – Most rural roads have a 65 MPH speed limit. However, these roads are long and are usually narrower, have more bends/curves and little or no shoulder. If you go off the road at 65 MPH you may flip the vehicle. Since they are narrower there may be little area for passing other vehicles. People may take a chance and pass in a no passing area. Also if an accident does occur it may take longer for emergency personal to get to the site.
Page 11: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Road Smart

• 86% TO 94% of all accidents are due to driver error

• Accidents can be prevented• Driving is pattern habits

– Good– Bad

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Everybody have good and bad habits while driving. Hopefully after this training some of the bad habits will change to good habits. By paying attention and focusing on driving you may prevent an accident.
Page 12: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Defensive Driving

• Driving to prevent an accident, in spite of the incorrect actions of the other drivers or weather conditions – Anticipate driving hazards and know how to

protect yourself – Be alert, keep your mind free of distractions and

your attention focused on driving

Presenter
Presentation Notes
During Drivers Ed they teach to anticipate different driving hazards. Ask yourself what would I do questions. (What would I do if that car pulls out in front of me? What would I do if that car cuts into my lane? What would I do if that truck has a blow out and the tire fly's off into my lane?) Driving is the task you are performing. Keep your mind free of all distractions. That includes the cell phone.
Page 14: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Presenter
Presentation Notes
No cars allowed. In small writing it says bridge is out ahead but they are more worried about the sharp edges of the sign.
Page 15: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Page 16: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Distracted Driving - #1 Cause of Accidents• Driving while distracted is a factor in 950,000

accidents per year• A motor vehicle is now an extension to the

office– Cell phones– Laptop computers– GPS and stereo systems– Meals

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Driving while distracted is a factor in 25% of police reported crashes (Nationwide Insurance Study) One in 10 fatalities involved distraction. There is more gadgets in the car that could become a distraction. The GPS, Radio, entertainment systems etc. Add cell phones and other distractions that the drive places in the call. Since people are on the go and spend more time in the car they are also eating meals while driving.
Page 17: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Cell Phones - #1 Distraction• Talking on the cell phone

– Hand held phone– Hands free phone

• Using a cell phone increases a drivers reaction time as much as having a BAC of 0.08%

• Driver on a cell phone is four times as likely to be involved in a serious accident

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Using a cell phone extends a drivers reaction as much as having a BAC of 0.08% - University of Utah StudyDriver on a cell phone is four times as likely to be involved in a serious accident (2007 New England Journal of Medicine examination of hospital records and the 2005 Insurance Institute for Highway study linking crashes to cell phone records)
Page 18: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Presenter
Presentation Notes
This is not an example of a hands free cell phone.
Page 19: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Other Distractions• Reading a map (or

book)• Drinking or eating• Applying make-up• Passengers• Adjusting the radio or

other vehicle controls

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Over the past 10 years our sleep has decreased by 20% 1/3 of all Americans receives 8 hours of sleep a night. 1500 deaths and 71,000 injured each year in fatigue related accidents. Not everybody driving is 100% healthy cold medicine Tranquilizers Antibiotic Passengers could be a major distraction. Just ask any parent driving around with little kids in the car.
Page 20: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Speed• #1 cause of accidents in rural areas• Speed limits in Arizona

– 15 mph in school zones• No Passing

– 20 - 25 mph in residential areas– 35 - 40 mph throughout the city

• Plan Ahead – You don’t make up time by speeding

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Research shows almost one in three fatalities involved drunk drivers or speeding. School Zones – No passing. Once you enter the school zone your tires can not pass any part of the car in the other lane. Fine are doubled in School and Construction Zones. Watch the speed limit signs. The speed limit on a specific road may change throughout the city. This is also where the police are watching for speeders. Especially if the posted speed limit goes from 45 down to 35.
Page 21: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Time to CommuteDistance traveled

MPH Time of commute

15 miles 40 mph 22.5 minutes

15 miles 45 mph 20 minutes

15 miles 50 mph 18 minutes

The time of commute does not take into consideration traffic controls, construction, or traffic.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
As the graph shows you don’t make up much time speeding. The graph is for direct driving. It does not take into consideration other traffic on the roads, construction delays, lights/stop signs, weather, etc.
Page 22: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Speed vs. Time

• How much time do you really save?• Short trips of 5-30 miles (20-50 seconds)• Trips of 15 miles (60 seconds)• Trips of 30 miles (2 minutes)

• How much time does the average human waste daily?

• As speed increases, eyes are forced to look further ahead• Field of vision narrows creating a form of tunnel vision

Page 23: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Check Twice Before Pulling Into an Intersection

• Eliminate missing cars that are in your blind spot

• Move into your path of direction only after you are assured that you will not conflict with other traffic

• Most severe type of accident

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Most intersection accidents occur 3 seconds after the light changes! Never assume that the other driver is going to yield at your intersection
Page 24: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Red Light Running• Arizona is #1 in the nation for deaths

occurring while red light running.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This picture was taking from a traffic camera. If you look closely you could see the man bouncing off the left side of the car and his briefcase flying through the air. You could also see the scared look of the lady crossing behind him as she observes what going on. However, if you look at the face of the driver, she is looking straight ahead and doesn’t appear to know what just happened.
Page 25: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Watch for Red Light Runners• Look both ways before

proceeding• Pay particular attention

at left turn signals• Ensure all cross traffic

has stopped the other driver may not be paying attention

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Tucson will soon have camera’s taking your picture and record your speed as you run the light. They are designed to be moved to different intersections Ensure your make-up I applied and you SMILE as you run the light, This picture may be better then your drivers license. Watch your speed limit, the major cause of accidents. Speed traps are out
Page 26: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The intersection in Arizona is an imaginary line going from the end of the curb to the end of the curb. Most people believe it is the line prior to the cross walk. The square imposed on the picture above show the intersection. As you can see in the top of the picture, there is a white van that crossed the cross walk but is just entering the intersection. If the light just turned red he would be flashed as he continues through the intersection.
Page 27: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Cost of running a red light

• Tickets for running a red light start at $280.00• Other fines

– No seat belt - $48.00– Expired Registration - $123.00 - $600.00– Speeding - $151.00 - $360.00

• In school zone - $280.00

Presenter
Presentation Notes
These are some of the fines you will pay in Tucson. The amount could change depending on the city/town you are in.
Page 28: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Use your Turn Signals• The Society of Automotive Engineers estimate

failing to use turn signals contributed to over 2 million accidents annually.– Changing lanes– Turning– Turning them off

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The turn signals are on the car for a reason. Use them. The let the other drivers know of your attentions.
Page 29: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Turning

Presenter
Presentation Notes
When turning stay in the correct lane. When making a right turn you must turn into the far right lane.
Page 30: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Look Both Left & Right When Making a Right Hand Turn

• Watch for pedestrian traffic

• Pay attention to cars making a u-turn

• Double check the traffic coming from the left

• Do not assume other drivers see you

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Pay attention to pedestrians especially when turning. People focus on the on coming traffic and not see the person crossing the road in a cross walk. If a car is making a U-turn and have a green light they have the right-a-way over the person making a right on red. Pay attention. However, they are some intersections where the person making a U-turn must yield to the person making the right on red. These intersections are posted. By double checking you reduce the risk of missing oncoming traffic due to it being in your blind spot.
Page 31: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Turn Your Head When Changing Lanes

• Physically check for a clear lane• Do not rely only on your rear view mirror• All mirrors have a blind spot

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Always double check by looking don’t just count on your mirrors.
Page 32: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Look Behind When Backing

• Don’t just look for traffic in the oncoming lane• Look directly behind your vehicle• Be aware of vehicles going against the flow of

traffic• Walk around your vehicle before starting

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Backing accidents are the most common type of accident. Avoid backing is the best prevention method Plan Ahead Avoidance versus convenience Get the whole picture Back slowly and make sure others see you Use a guide Scan front, back, and sides Back only as far as needed
Page 33: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Watch for Kids/Pedestrians• They have a habit of

appearing out of no where • Pay close attention in

parking lots, residential areas and apartment complexes

• Anticipate the unexpected. The pedestrian may assume that you will see them and you will slow down

Presenter
Presentation Notes
New bicycle law in Tucson. Must give 4 foot clearance when passing. If involved in an accident fine is increased to $2,000. (if at fault) SCHOOL is in session 15 MPH in school zones Do not pass in School Zones
Page 34: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

HAWK - High-intensity Activated CrossWalK’s– When the light flashes yellow, use caution– When it changes to solid yellow, prepare to stop – Remain stopped during solid red – When flashing red, motorists must come to a full

stop and then proceed after making sure there is no danger to a pedestrian or motorist

Page 35: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

School Zones

15 MPH - MaxNo PassingWatch for children

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The max speed once you enter a school zone is 15 MPH. However, if you are in the right lane and the car to your left is going 10 MPH the speed limit is now 10 MPH because you can’t pass in a school zone. No part of your car could pass another car while in the zone.
Page 36: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Stopping the Vehicle

• Stopping distance equals:– Reaction distance plus braking distance– At 35 mph reaction distance is 77'– Add 59’ for braking distance– Total stopping distance is 136’

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Braking distance is a factor of three components: Perception time = 1 second Reaction time = 3/4second Braking distance = Depends on vehicle speed Doubling your speed increases braking by 4 times.
Page 37: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Perception and reaction times increase if you are: Tired Under the influence Distracted Braking distance increases if: Tires are worn or improperly inflated Brakes are worn Weather Weight of vehicle increases
Page 38: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

The Two Second Rule• Maintain a space cushion of

two seconds• Use under normal (good)

driving conditions• Increase to four seconds

during adverse conditions• Anticipate the other driver’s

moves

Presenter
Presentation Notes
The 2 second rule. When the car in front of you pass an object you should be able to count 1000 – 1, 1000 -2 before your car pass that object. If you do not have two seconds you are following to close. This should be increased to four seconds if the weather is bad or you are operating a heavy vehicle. The two seconds comes out to several car lengths. If a car pulls into that space just ease up on the gas and increase the new space.
Page 39: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Passenger Management• Do not drive if the

passengers are not secured with a seat belt

• Inform the passengers that they are responsible for acting safety

• If the passengers are not cooperating, stop the vehicle until it safe to continue driving

Presenter
Presentation Notes
All passengers must be wearing their seat belts and behaving properly while the vehicle is in motion.
Page 40: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Occupant Protection• Safety belts

– Absorbs force of the crash– Helps you stay in control of your vehicle by

keeping you in the seat– Keeps passengers in their seat– Wear your seat belt, it’s ARIZONA law

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Almost half of passenger vehicle occupants killed were not wearing seat belts. Over 13,941 lives were saved by wearing a seat belt. Air bags are a Supplement to seat belts Lap belts positioned low and tight across the hips, not the stomach. Shoulder belt over the shoulder, not under the arm or behind the occupant.
Page 41: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Presenter
Presentation Notes
The next few pictures were taken in Atlanta. A 16-year old boy snuck out of the house at night and took his parents car. While driving at a high rate of speed he lost control and hit a pole. The car was cut in half from the impact.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
When police arrived the young man was standing next to the vehicle. He only had minor injuries, at least until his parents showed up. As you can see the drivers compartment was still in tact and he was wearing his seat belts. Wearing the seat belts do save lives.
Page 45: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Construction Zones• An estimated 1,000 people are killed and

45,000 injured in work zones each year• 85% of fatalities are drivers or their

passengers• Speed limit is reduced and the fines are

doubled in work zones

Presenter
Presentation Notes
There are many distractions in work zones so you have to pay extra attention
Page 46: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Move Over LawArizona's "Move Over" law requires motorists to move over one lane — or slow down if it is not safe to change lanes —when driving by any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of a road or highway

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Arizona's "Move Over" law requires motorists to move over one lane — or slow down if it is not safe to change lanes — when driving by any vehicle with flashing lights pulled to the side of a road or highway. This protects the emergency workers or person on the side of the road.
Page 47: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Stupid Motorist Law• High Water and Low Intelligence does not mix.

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Yes this is the name of the law. It is against the law to enter a flooded wash if barricades are posted. Beside being on the nightly news of you standing on the top of oyur vehicle you may be fined and pay for the cost of the rescue.
Page 48: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Dust Storms (Haboob)

Page 49: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Driving in Dust• Turn on your headlights and slow down • If you can safely avoid it, do not enter a dust

storm • If your visibility is impeded by dust, slowly pull

off to the side of the road as far to the right as possible. Turn off the car and headlights, set the parking brake and keep your foot off the brake pedal

Page 50: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Securing Your Load• Broken windshields #1 claim

for construction fleets• Everything you are carrying

must be secured• Your equipment my result in

an accident for another vehicle

Presenter
Presentation Notes
When in a accident everything in your vehicle that is not secured becomes a potential missile.

• On the increase nation wide • 1 in 8 Tucson drivers carry a

loaded gun in their car • You don’t know the

condition of the other driver – On drugs – Just lost their job – Major fight with spouse

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Road rage is on the increase. A few years ago the Tucson Daily Star reported 1 in 8 drivers carry a loaded gun in the car. I am sure that number is higher now. You don’t know what will set off the other driver. However, it usually takes two to have an incident. Do not provoke the other driver. Road Rage also increases during the holidays and during the hot summer months. You don’t have to be on the road to experience road rage. A high number of incidents occur in parking lots.
Page 60: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley
Presenter
Presentation Notes
These two drivers would not budge and let the other go first. It ends up wrecking both of their cars, ruining their day, the day of the other drivers trying to get through the toll booth and the poor guy trapped in the toll booth. All of this could have been prevented by letting the other driver go first.
Page 61: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Preventing Road Rage• Do not provoke the other driver

– No flashing lights – Do not blow your horn – Look straight ahead

• If you are being followed use your cellular phone to call 911

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Do not provoke the other driver. If you need back off and get off the road as soon as possible. If you are being followed go to a public place where there a re a lot of people. Do not go to your hose. It just lets the other driver know where you live. If you are going to call 911 make sure you can tell them where you are at, the cross roads and the direction of travel. Also describe the other vehicle as best as you can. Stay on the phone.
Page 63: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Golf Carts• Golf carts must be operated only by those

employees whose duties make it necessary for them to walk significant distances or to move equipment that is difficult or time consuming to move

• Do not start until fully seated and legs are inside

• Wear seat belt• Operate no faster than 15 mph

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Most golf carts used are designed to carry a driver and one passenger. A golf cart should not be operated with more passengers than it is designed to carry. Drivers and passengers must remain seated while the vehicle is moving. All occupants in the golf cart shall keep hands, arms, legs and feet within the confines of the golf cart at all times when the cart is in motion. When the golf cart is not in use, the operator will place the golf cart control lever in the “Neutral” position and remove the key. Only an approved battery charger will be used to recharge the batteries (designed to shut off automatically when the batteries are fully charged.).
Page 64: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

In Case of an Accident

• Provide assistance to any injured persons• Reporting procedures will vary depending on

the location of the accident– Public roads– Private property

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If you have an emergency call 911 to report it. The police may or may not respond. In Tucson the police will not respond on private property, or if there are not any injuries and the vehicles can be moved. In that case pull off the road when you can do safely and exchange information with the other driver. If you can use your cell phone to take a picture of the accident prior to moving the vehicles. You must then go on line and file a report.
Page 65: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

In Case of an Accident

• Notify the appropriate police agency and report the accident

• Obtain the name, telephone number, drivers license number and insurance carrier of the other party involved in the accident

• Do not admit any liability or agree to any payments with the other party

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Never admit the accident was your fault. Leave that up to the insurance companies to determine. Even saying you are sorry can be interrupted as it was your fault.
Page 66: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Insurance Company’s View

• Only wants to insure good drivers• Annually review all motor vehicle records• Deny insurance coverage to those that have

poor driving records• IMPORTANT – your driving habits during non-

business hours can affect your status on the job!

Presenter
Presentation Notes
If you drive for company business your company may be checking your driving records on a regular basis. All accidents, on the job and off, shows up on your record. If you have several tickets or a DUI off the job it may effect your employment. If you can drive for the company you may loose your job.
Page 67: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Vehicle Maintenance

• Defensive driving starts with vehicle maintenance. The following items should be checked regularly: Brakes and brake fluid Belts Tires and tire pressure Engine fluids Wipe blades Windshield and window cleanliness

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Check your vehicle on a regular basis. Make sure you check the tire pressure – low pressure causes low gas mileage. It also allows your tire to heat up and may result in tire failure. It is also important to check your windshield wipers prior to the beginning of monsoon season. They dry out during the hot summer months and fall apart the first time you go to use one. You don’t want to be that person standing in the pouring rain at the auto parts store changing your windshield wipers the first storm of monsoon.
Page 68: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Pumping Gas• Static electricity

may cause gas vapors to ignite – Do not get into

your vehicle while pumping gas

– Do not use a cell phone

Presenter
Presentation Notes
Static electricity can cause a fire while pumping gas. Do not enter the vehicle once you start pumping the gas because your pants sliding across the seat fabric may cause the static charge. If you must enter the vehicle, run your hand down the side of the vehicle while walking back to the pump to discharge any static electricity.
Page 69: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

Summary• Preventing collisions

– Recognize hazards– Understand the defense– Act correctly

• Change your driving habits to fit your physical abilities

Presenter
Presentation Notes
This picture was taking while driving on the interstate at 65 MPH in North Carolina. As I went to pass the vehicle I could see the persons foot sticking out of the window. My wife snapped the picture. I guess he was making himself comfortable while driving.
Page 70: Safe Driver Awareness - Sun City Oro Valley

A safe driver is not merely someone who has been lucky enough to avoid accidents, but is one who drives defensively and looks out for others
