Chemical CleaningKey Points from EPCL Safety Plan
Prevention is the only option. Stop Injuries/ Incident from happening!
Definitions Hazardous materials are chemical substances, which if released or misused can pose a threat to the environment or
health. Hazardous materials come in the form of explosives, flammable and combustible substances, poisons, and radioactive materials.
These substances are most often released as a result of transportation accidents or because of chemical accidents in plants.
Hazardous materials in various forms can cause death, serious injury, long-lasting health effects, and damage to buildings, homes, and other property. Many products containing hazardous chemicals are used and stored in homes routinely.
You may be exposed to a chemical even though you may not be able to see or smell anything unusual. You may be exposed in three ways: (1) breathing the chemical; (2) Swallowing contaminated food, water, or medication; or (3) touching the chemical, or coming into contact with clothing or things that have touched the chemical.
Precautions: Store Chemicals in dry, cool, well ventilated
area away from heat and ignition source. Labeling should be confirmed for all
chemical drums Ensure MSDS is available with all chemical
drums. Arrangement of trolley for shifting of
chemicals. Chemical cleaning area should be
segregated. Fire equipments should be stored near by. Safety shower should be ready and without
any obstruction. Work sites should e clean and orderly and
clearly marked. All the equipments should be inspected and
marked before use. Always work under work permits. When working at height, use inspected
scaffold. Never work inside confined spaces, before
all necessary confined space checks and confined space work permit.
Personal safety Always work under work permit. Use recommended PPE’s, during all
chemical cleaning steps, well be mentioned on each permit. (Like face shield when working in laundry).
Conduct safety talk on daily basis. Supervisor should ensure that all the
individuals are well aware the hazards and precaution, ERP and Spill control system.
Never allow the unauthorized persons inside cleaning area.
While transporting the chemicals one attendant should move along with fork lift operator.
All equipments that come in contact with chemicals should be clean, free of impurities and dry.
Don’t eat and drink in cleaning area. Ensure that the hose and couplings are the
correct types for the intended use.
