SAE-DCE has been actively engaged in organizing awide range of activities, which have been instrumental in bringingto the students a glimpse of the practical side of AutomotiveEngineering. Due to the unceasing efforts of the student membersand the support of Prof.S.Maji—our faculty advisor— these eventswere immensely successful and appreciated by our members. Thestudent chapter has been keenly involved in upholding the mottoof the Society Of Automotive Engineers and enhancing the causeof mobility among its enthusiastic student members.

The last academic year was full with a broad variety of events. Some of the important ones are:

CHIMERA I- SAE-DCE, with a humanitarian zeal and an objectiveof advancing mobility, came up with the pioneering idea of orga-nizing a national level car design contest held on 18th October2001. The objective of the competition was to design a vehicle forthe paraplegic people i.e. people having invalid lower limb. Theevent explored the technical zeal among students all over the coun-try and saw entries from the length and breadth of India.

SEMINARS & LECTURES-This chapter has been organizing anumber of seminars and talks by eminent personalities in the fieldof mobility engineering to enlighten our members about the new trendsin the Industry. The major ones being:

Seminar on robotics- In this, Prof.S.K.Saha from IITD edified the students about the new horizons robotics offer and also about the intricate dynamics of these man-made brains.

Lecture on I.C. Engines and CNG - An introductory lecture onI.C. Engines and CNG Engines was delivered byProf. R.S.Khanduja and Prof. S.Maji respectively.

Talk on MPFI (Multi Point Fuel Injection) technology – A highlyinformative talk on the revolutionary MPFI technology sweepingthe automotive world was delivered by Dr.Sukhbir Singh fromMaruti Udyog Ltd.

Lecture on Aviation- Another lecture by engineers from IndianAirlines was held in 23rd Oct. 2002 where the student membersgot an insight into the technology used in the Aerospace Indus-try.

A seminar on ‘ Experimental Mechanics and EnvironmentalMeasures in Automotive Industry’ was organized on 26th

Feb.2002.

Seminar on ‘CATIA’ and ‘Pro-E’ by Micron Graphics washeld on 5th Sep.2002, which drew huge attention from its mem-bers due to its proximity with the new scenario.

Trips to various industries - SAE-DCE has been constantlyorganizing trips to various industries in order to help the stu-dent members to bridge the gap between the theoretical knowl-edge and the practical know-how. These include educationalexcursions to Maruti Udyog Ltd. in Gurgaon, Carrier Air con-ditioners, Indian Railways in Tughlakabad , Delhi Vidyut BoardPlant,Tool Room and Lathe Centre, Sona Koya Steering Plantand National Thermal Power Corporation.

Mega Industrial Workshop – SAE-DCE organized a techni-cal workshopon 28

Our endeavour at the SAE IIT Delhi collegiate chapter is toenculcate amongst ourselves, the practical skills that are a mustfor every engineer. We regularly conduct Hands On TrainingSessions (that are appropriately termed “HOT”) giving stu-dents a hands-on experience at various assemblies and for themto practically observe whatever they have studied in theircourses. Factory visits undertaken by our chapter introducethe students to the industry environment and give them aninsight into industry practices. Off late, we have had visits toMaruti Udyoug Ltd. factory and the CAPARO manufacturingplant.

Our members have been active in events outside Delhi aswell, a team of undergraduate students is currently preparingto take part in the National Level Robotics Challenge in IITBombay (Robocon’03).

Our faculty advisors, Dr. Saha and Dr.PMV Subbarao havebeen the guiding force behind all our activities andachievements. The membership of the IIT Delhi chapter thisyear has been the maximum so far.
