NAVAL BRIDGE SIMULATOR The Naval Bridge Simulator is designed to facilitate training of a bridge team in safe navigation of a vessel as well as all other aspects of naval operations and evolutions such as self-‐defence, flight operations, formation manouevering, etc. The basic configuration (scalable upwards) has an integrated bridge desk with conning, radar, propulsion and systems management (incl. damage control) and tactical/navigation positions. Inter-‐console inserts contain all internaI and external communication operator units and various control panels such as helo management, weapon cut-‐outs etc. In addition, pelorus, bridgewing gun controller and navigation cabinet simulators are available. Deck-‐ and bulkhead repeaters are fitted appropriately.

COMPANY PROFILE Cybicom Atlas Defence (CAD) is a joint company between Cybicom Africa Technologies Ltd (CAT) [60%] and Atlas Elektronik GmbH (AE) [40%]. The board of directors currently comprises Mr. DG Viljoen (MD), Mr. MA Behrens and Mr. I.M. Bryan (British). HELICOPTER FLIGHT DECK TRAINER

The Helicopter Flight Deck Trainer (HFDT) is designed to provide joint training for Flight Deck Controllers (FDC) and marine helicopter pilots. The simulator provides a safe, cost effective solution to train personnel in a realistic and controlled environment. The simulation system combines custom developed gesture recognition software and commercial off-‐the-‐shelf (COTS) motion tracking hardware, PRESAGIS modelling and simulation software, the STAGE scenario generation tool and VAPS XT interactive graphical interfaces. It is a flexible modular system that can be supplied in various levels, from a simple, portable, desktop trainer to a multichannel, high-‐ performance tracking system.

Working with our US based internationalmarketing partners, Critical SolutionsInternational; we have been successful in typeclassifying the VMMD System on a USGovernment Program of Record acquisition. The combat proven Husky vehicle, which isthe core of the system, is a unique landminedetection vehicle that is blast survivable,overpass capable and field reparable.

Operations in Afghanistan and Iraq expandedthe Husky's role beyond detecting andmarking landmines to the detection of IED'sand EFP's. The system facilitates fast andefficient route clearance creating safe passagefor military personnel and civilians. Whatmakes the Husky unique is its ability to passover pressure fused anti-vehicle landmineswithout detonating them.

In the event of a detonation, the componentshave been engineered in a unique modularconfiguration and break apart in a predictablefashion, facilitating fast in-field repairs. Thesystem clears a 3m wide path travelling atspeeds between 15 and 50 km/h dependingon terrain. The systems in service havecollectively been subjected to thousands ofdetonations.

With the increasing length of route clearancemissions the need was identified for a vehiclethat can carry two occupants, splitting tasksbetween the driver and operator of thedetection equipment. This has prompted anevolution to a two operator variant known asthe Husky 2G, which retains the majority offeatures and components of the current HuskyMK III as well as Ground Penetrating Radar(GPR), blowers and robotic arms have nowbeen operationalized on Husky vehicles. TheHusky 2G has received one of the highestaccolades in the military world - beingnumbered among the US Army's top ten“Greatest Inventions”.

Users of these vehicles include the US Army,

US Marine Corps, JIEDDO, Canadian NationalDefence Force, Australian Army, South AfricanArmy, Ugandan and Kenyan Armies, as wellas the Spanish and French Armed Forces. TheHalo Trust is still utilizing systems acquired bythe United Kingdom in Humanitarianoperations.

In 2004, the US deployed its systems to Iraqand Afghanistan. Their success led, in 2005,for an order for 30.5 Chubby systems, including61 Huskies - to simplify the logistical tail, theAmericans dropped the Meerkat vehicle andreplaced it with a second Husky.

Since then, the US Army and USMC havetogether acquired about 1 400 Huskies, whileother countries, notably Australia, Canada andKenya, have bought around 200 more.Strikingly, the Australian, Canadian and Kenyanpurchases of the South African system werefunded by the US government under itsForeign Military Sales (FMS) programme.

Mountain Lion Armoured Utility VehicleBased on its success in service, and throughobserving the heavy MRAP vehicles restrictedmobility in urban areas and arduous terrainDCD PROTECTED MOBILITY has developeda revolutionary new Armoured Utility Vehicle,the Mountain Lion. This versatile vehicle iscapable of fulfilling multiple roles on thebattlefield. Engineered for demandingly highpayload while ensuring crew survivability, theMountain Lion extends expeditionarycapabilities and can be transported in aC-130 aircraft.

The Mountain Lion is also ideally suited forpeacekeeping and policing operations. Itsunique design incorporates a single piecev-shaped armoured hull ensuring maximumprotection from blast threats. Superb ballisticprotection (also from IED's and EFP's) isachieved. Enclosure of all sub-systems withinthe hull ensures protection of critical compo-nents. The vehicle can carry a crew of up to2 plus 8 soldiers complete with kit.

The Mountain Lion has been successfully

tested at the Nevada. Automotive Test Centrenear Carson City, USA and has recently passedthe arduous UAE Armed Forces Summer Trialat the first attempt. Blast testing has beenconcluded and results are well within designparameters.

The Mountain Lion, was showcased early inSeptember 2012. This vehicle has proven tobe very successful, being the only vehicle inits caliber to finish the Summer Trail the firsttime around.

Competing against large companies such asRenault, this was a great achievement for DCD.Andrew Mears, General Manager of DCDProtected Mobility, stated that the MountainLion, similar to the other vehicles on theSummer Trail, got stuck in the mud, but wasthe only vehicle able to work its way out onits own. Mears says that the Mountain Lionhas been developed from the needs identifiedfrom DCD's Husky route clearance equipmentand contains an optimal balance required fora very specific niche. The Mountain Lion isideally suited for peacekeeping, peaceenforcement and policing type operations.

Springbuck Armoured Personnel CarrierThe permanent 4x4 Springbuck APC featuresa powerful MWM 6 litre engine and carries adriver and ten personnel. With B6 ballisticprotection upgradeable to B7, the all-steelarmoured v-shaped hull is designed towithstand a TM57 landmine under the hull, ortwo under any wheel. The standardconfiguration can be easily adapted to suitvarious applications, including an ambulance,cash-in transit, riot control or tactical patrolvehicle and, with the addition of turret-mounted weaponry, the vehicle can also beeffectively used in combat.

DCD PROTECTED MOBILITY offers customerstotal life cycle support providing maintenance,repairs, logistics information, product support,training and field support for these vehicles.

These vehicles are in service in variouscountries in Africa.

Reutech Radar Systems (RRS) develops and manufactures ground and naval search and tracking radar systems for application in the military and homeland security environments, movement and surveying sensors for application in open-pit mines and solar trackers for the industrial sector.

Current Products include:3D Radar SystemsDBRXL (RSR 320)RRS has developed innovative technology around a new 3-dimensional ground-based dual-band radar which has delivered world-leading performance in surveillance and missile fire control applications. This technology has been developed in partnership with the Department of Defence, Armscor, CSIR, Denel and the Universities of Stellenbosch and Cape Town.The system is based on the ESR 220 Thutlwa local warning radar currently in service with the SA Army Air Defence Artillery Formation, with the addition of high-accuracy 3D target detection and tracking capabilities. The suitability of the product for the support of ground-based Surface-To-Air Missiles (SAMs) was asserted in the superior tracking accuracy of aircraft under surveillance.

2D Radar SystemsRSR 210NThe RSR 210N is a lightweight X-Band 2D naval air/sea surveillance radar designed for application on smaller naval and coastguard vessels. This radar, which provides coverage to beyond 50 km, may be supplied with a dedicated console or may be interfaced to a Combat Management System. Whilst it is particularly suited to helicopter support

operations aboard ship, it is also applied in a general surveillance (simultaneously covering both air and sea surface surveillance) and gunfire support role. The technology applied in this system is derived from the RTS 6400 tracking radar currently in service with the SA Navy.

ESR 220 ThutlwaThe ESR 220 system presently in service with the SA Army is a highly mobile solid state L-band 2D surveillance radar designed to provide early warning to mechanised troops in the battlefield. It is a fully autonomous armoured system with self-contained power plant packaged on a single vehicle, and is capable of being fully operational within 10 minutes of arrival at the deployment site. The system also provides for a combined air picture derived from primary radar and IFF, as well as a Command and Control system for effective Air Defence Control operation.

StealthRad™ Family (RSR 900)The RSR 900 StealthRad™ product range has been developed in response to increasing demands for persistent, all-weather and low visibility situational awareness of borders, strategic infra-structure, marine protected areas, and inland waterways. StealthRad™ is a family of cost-effective, lightweight, Low Probability of Intercept (LPI), Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars. Products in this range can be applied in multiple roles, and provide for a range of features that can be tailored to specific user needs. The sharing of technology in hardware and software sub-systems ensures cost efficiency within the StealthRad™ family.

Perimeter Intrusion Monitoring System (RSS 1000)The Perimeter Intrusion Monitoring System or “PIMS” integrates traditional technologies used for asset protection, such as cameras, with ground surveillance radar technology. The addition of radar not only provides the benefit of persistently surveying large areas, but also includes other attributes such as all-weather; day/night capability and geo-referenced intruder position reporting and tracking that enhance security personnel’s ability to respond while also assisting to reduce operator fatigue.

Technology Development projects:New Generation Optronics Radar Tracker (RTS 3200)RTS 3200 is a new generation light-weight optronics radar tracker. The sensor operates in X-band, is instrumented to 40km and provides the operator with an all-weather target engagement capability using both radar and optronics sensors. The product is designed for application aboard smaller naval vessels which would normally only employ electro-optic trackers.

Staring Array SensorsRRS has expanded its technological capabilities into the field of staring array radar sensors. These sensors, developed for vehicle self-protection applications, provide the means for accurate detection and tracking of small, fast moving projectiles against complex clutter backgrounds.

Published under the auspices of the SA Aerospace Maritime and Defence Industries Association (AMD), this 13th Edition of the SA Defence Industry Directory marks another key landmark of a much sought after and arguably one of the most widely distributed industry directories from a defence industry point of view. In writing its foreword, I was compelled to reflect and think about both the past and the future.

The past, though marked with much progress and success, was recently marred by the passing on of our beloved country’s first democratically elected President, the founding father of our new nation and the first Commander in Chief of the integrated National Defence Force. It was this gentle giant and revered statesman who ordered the pioneering deployments of our uniformed men and women in the peacekeeping and humanitarian relief operations in Burundi and Mozambique respectively. Since then, our armed forces have found good use in the fight against piracy, the protection of our resources and the efforts to halt the scourge of Rhino poaching. Supported and enabled by the loyalty and ingenuity of our defence industries, the newly formed SANDF did South Africa, humanity and the world proud.

This directory profiles and projects the pride of the SA economy and defence community – the SA Defence Industry (SADI). As you page through this directory, we will be hard at work implementing the recommendations of the SA Defence Review which by then will have been approved by the SA Parliament with the intention of charting a strategic path for not only the

SANDF but also the SADI. Concurrently, we will be going into the 5th democratic elections which signify the deepening, enhancement and entrenchment of the democratisation of what is now a free and non-racial South African nation.

This milestone will make us cherish the past and celebrate this past as the 20 Years of Democracy & Freedom. The same milestone will also propel SA and the continent into the future. A future of stability, certainty, security, progress and development – founded on a strong defence capability that is in turn enabled by the partnership with our partners in the defence industry.

Another key event in the near future will be the 8th instalment of the Africa Aerospace and Defence Exhibition (AAD 2014) at Air Force Base Waterkloof in Tshwane. SADID 13 will aptly complement and supplement AAD 2014 which promises to be an excellent showcase of the defence industrial and technological prowess that enables us to guarantee our citizens and neighbours a better future.

As we continue to nurture our relations with the SADI, we remain resolute to working with all stakeholders and partners including AMD as the industry representative to ensure that the SADI retains its reputation as a non-aligned, reliable, credible, innovative and compliant supplier of defence technologies, equipment and services to the SANDF, our partners in the region and sub-continent as well as globally.

As an industry we have a lot to be proud of and the pages of this directory are but a small window through which you can peep and gain some exposure and insight into the innovative prowess and capa-bilities of the SA aerospace and defence industry.

We are grateful for the continued support of the SA government especially the MOD & MV, SANDF, Armscor as well as the dti. As we journey towards the 5th democratic elections in SA and the celebration of 20 Years of Democracy and Freedom, we remain confident that our relationships with like-minded nations in the African continent as well as in strategic partner-ship like IBSA and BRICS will sustain our future as an industry.

As we charter our way out of the difficult economic climate that saw most countries reduce their defence spending following the 2008 financial meltdown, we are truly humbled by the response of the South African industry to embrace this 2014-2015 edition. We are equally encouraged by the world data that suggests that the economic climate is improving and we continue to be optimistic that it would translate to healthier defence spending.

Though the world has enjoyed some con-siderable peace in recent times with some sporadic conflicts mushrooming in cer-tain parts of the world, peace is further challenged by the increase in terrorism, human trafficking and poverty largely in the sub-Saharan region. These challenges compel us to retain a stronger and united SADI and I’m proud to present these capa-bilities as possible solutions and solutions

provider to world peace.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all contributors for their partici-pation in yet another successful industry edition of this directory and know that our well established and extensive dis-tribution footprint will assure them of optimal exposure until the next print run is due.

ProfileAMD is the South African Aerospace Maritime and Defence Industries Association of South Africa. Its primary objectives are the representation of the industry in matters of mutual interest, and the promotion of a profitable, sustainable and responsible industry. The association is acknowledged as the only trade association of South Africa’s defence industry (SADI), and is mandated by its members to promote and champion the collective interests of the industry. It comprises of a cluster of leading companies in the South African private and public sector that supply defence materiel, products and services.

security marketplace.

Cassidian, Airbus Military and Astrium – representing around 40,000 employees – will merge to become Airbus Defence and Space. As one of the three Divisions of the Airbus Group it will be Europe’s Number 1 defence and space company. Airbus Defence and Space will be composed of four business lines: Military Aircraft; Space Systems; Communication, Intelligence & Security (CIS); and Electronics. • Military Aircraft, headed by Domingo Ureña-Raso, designs, develops, delivers and supports military aircraft and will be the leading fixed-wing military aircraft centre in Europe and one of the market leaders for combat, transport and tanker aircraft world-wide. Key products include the Eurofighter, A400M, A330 MRTT and C295/CN235 as well as the development of unmanned aerial systems.

• Space Systems, headed by François Auque, covers the full range of civil and defence space systems with its unique expertise. Its satellite system solutions for telecommunications, earth observation, navigation and science include spacecraft, ground segments and payloads. As the European prime contractor for launchers, orbital systems and space exploration, its key systems include Ariane launchers, the French deterrent force and European space cargo vehicle, the ATV.

• Communication, Intelligence & Security (CIS), headed by Evert Dudok, will be the new “one-stop-shop” for satellite and terrestrial communication, intelligence and security services and solutions. The customer

base encompasses both the government sector – notably defence and security forces – and commercial sector including transportation (maritime, airport, metro), energy (oil, gas and electricity), mining and agriculture. Key services and solutions include: military and commercial satellite communication services, professional mobile radio communication, emergency response centres (such as 9-1-1/112), border surveillance systems, command & control (C4I) systems, cyber security solutions and services and observation satellite based geo-information services.

• Electronics, headed by Thomas Müller, will provide high-performance equipment for system integrators serving both Airbus Defence and Space within the Airbus Group as well as external customers worldwide. Products are mainly for civil, defence and security markets covering ground, maritime, airborne and space applications. Land Systems South Africa Land Systems South Africa is a South African company jointly owned by BAE Systems (75%) and the South African Black Economic Empowerment Company, DGD Technologies (2001) (Pty) Ltd (25%). It comprises three busi-nesses; OMC, Gear Ratio and Dynamics.

Gear Ratio Gear Ratio’s product portfolio ranges from in-house custom-designed and manufactured solutions to standard drive-train options developed in partnership with strategically select-ed world-class partners.

The NAC has a dedicated human capi-tal development and knowledge cre-ation programme aimed at growing skills and innovative capacity required for a world-class domestic aerospace and defence manufacturing industry. The NAC also supports related research and development for these industries in key technology focus areas. It is funded by the dti, and hosted and managed by the University of the Witwatersrand.

In fulfilling its mandate, the NAC offers human capital development support, including the provision of bursaries and scholarships, support for course development, and targeted training initiatives. The NAC also undertakes a number of outreach projects and awareness initiatives, aimed at youth and graduate development.

The NAC facilitates research in key areas such as advanced materials and manufacturing processes, aeronautical dynamics, simulation, and control and aerospace design. This is by fostering partnerships and funding projects, pro-ducing new technologies aligned with industry and government’s vision, and developing strategic direction for the aerospace industry. Internationally, the NAC has established a sound partner-ship with Airbus and Boeing and has developed support relationships with various African countries as well.

Denel Overberg Test Range is a well-instrumented test facility at the southernmost tip of Africa specialising in the support of live firing trials of sophisticated missile and aviation systems. It also conducts long-range artillery tests and is qualified to provide mobile telemetry support in remote locations during space missions.

The Range tracking array is fully integrated and offers the flexibility to allow multipurpose applications. It has the capability to support complex test scenarios involving the simultaneous tracking of several dynamic objects. Data capture includes trajectory and telemetry recording, high speed video footage (also in the IR spectrum), and meteorological measurements at altitude. A large arena of both sea and land terrain and a command destruct system render it eminently suitable for the execution of stand-off weapon trials launched from land, sea or areal platforms.

Rogue RWSReutech Solutions’ “Rogue” remote weapon station, (RWS) is a remotely operated stabilised weapon system for light and medium calibre weapons which can be installed on patrol boats or ships and ground combat vehicles. Such equipment is used on modern platforms, as it allows a gunner to remain in the relative protection of the platform.

Reutech Solutions offers a range of RWS’s for different land and sea applications.

These weapons can be fitted with a range of small calibre weapons as well as smoke launchers and light missiles.

SEA-OwL (Close-In Surveillance System)The SEA-OwL system is a surveillance system designed to offer protection at close range to asymmetric threats. for over 32 years, Thales South Africa Systems (TSAS) has developed a reputation for tailoring solutions to demanding requirements, offering excellent performance and value for money.

Since the 1970’s, TSAS has been the leading Combat / Command and Control System supplier to the South African Navy. Our pedigree includes, inter alia, the design, development and production of Weapon Control and Action Information Systems for the SA Navy’s Fast Attack Craft, and the design, development and produc-tion of two generations of Submarine Combat System – including Action Information, Navigation, and Sonar Systems. In these programmes TSAS assumed the role of Lead System Integrator. This record led to TSAS being appointed as Prime Contractor and Lead System Integrator for the Combat Suite fitted to the SA Navy’s VALOUR Class Frigates; in addition, TSAS is the supplier [in collaboration with THALES Naval France] of the Frigate’s Combat Management System.

TSAS is a supplier of ruggedized, COTS-based, Naval Operator Consoles and Electronics Cabinets to the THALES Naval Division. TSAS hard-ware has been used in the HORIZON, HERCULES and FREMM programmes in Europe as well as in other export programmes.

To address the needs of the small to medium vessel market, TSAS has devel-oped the Compact Combat System. The Compact System incorporates two primary elements – the Compact Sensor Control System (CSCS) and the Compact Fire Control System (CFCS). These elements together offer naval and paramilitary users effective and

efficient systems that fit within scope of requirement, space, mass and budget. The CSCS facilitates surveil-lance operations through a console/sensor pairing with a wide range of radar sensors. The system incorporates much of the situational awareness and planning functionality normally only found in more complex Combat Management Systems. The CFCS pro-vides a dedicated tracker and weapon fire control solution, through selection of components to meet the individual user requirements in terms of weapon preference, operational roles and specific threats. Again, the system can be associated with a wide range of electro-optical or optical-radar trackers and weapons.

The CSCS and CFCS can be fitted inde-pendently as stand-alone systems, or linked together to provide a complete CMS solution for smaller vessels. A modular design approach allows easy customisa-tion to suit user-specific requirements. Open-source COTS technol-ogy base, user-friendly HMI and flexible open architectures, all support the integration of both new and older generation weapons, sensors and data-link equipment.

TSAS’ in-house logistic engineering capabilities conduct design influence studies and logistic support analyses, facilitating affordable logistic support packages [including technical manu-als, training materials, etc]. Body Armour PlatesBPT manufactures a wide variety of hard body armour plates including lightweight plates, multi-tile plates, monolithic ceramic plates and flex-ible ceramic plates. The composi-tion of the plates depend on the requirements and materials used which include Ceramic, Aramid Fibre, HPPE, Armour Steel, High Density Fiberglass, special polymers and com-posites of these materials.

Bullet TrapsBPT Bullet traps have a unique grad-ed composite armour design allow-ing it to safely “catch” low-energy bullets, while still ensuring safe stop-ping of Armour Piercing rifle bullets. It is available as lightweight portable units as well as heavier mounted units.

ExoshieldBPT has developed the “Exoshield” as a new generation ballistic shield. The shield has a lightweight “Exoskeleton” frame all the way around the shield. This provides very good rigidity to the shield and also serves as a structural member to carry all loads. Add-On Vehicle ArmourImprovised Explosive Devices (IED), Explosively Formed projectiles (EFP) and the use of armour piercing bul-lets have increased to such an extent, that it is now a basic requirement that all military vehicles should be fitted with enhanced add-on armour to ensure survival of the crew in case of an attack. BPT has developed and is manufacturing modular add-on armour panels using advanced mate-rials, to add on to the exterior and/orinterior (spall liners) of armoured vehicles to increase the armour pro-tection of the vehicles.

The REVA Armoured Personnel Carrier is manufactured from recognised armoured steel (Armox 500) from Sweden. It is built on a solid V-shaped monocoque hull − a unique, combat-proven South African design − and has been modified to withstand threats encountered worldwide today.

The Rippel Effect Systems XRGL40® extended range 40mm multi-shot grenade launcher is a true multi-role weapon.

The system combines a modern designed weapon weighing less than 5kg with a smart multi-velocity sighting system. The XRGL40® enables the individual soldier to engage a variety of targets in different operational theatres at ranges up to 800m. It makes it easy for operational commanders and soldiers to adhere to the principles of pro-portionate lethality when engag-ing targets.

The XRGL40® is fitted with the lightweight, compact GR40® elec-tronic programmable sight that enables the soldier to use 40mm ammunition with different ballis-tic profiles from the same weap-on. The XRGL40® fires 40 x 46mm low velocity and 40 x 51mm medium velocity grenades. With equal ease, the same weapon can index the latest less-lethal rounds with very low port pressures. AMRfCS (Scorpion)Thales South Africa Systems has made major advances with new technology related to the mor-tar and rocket combination sys-tems. Scorpion, or the Automated Mortar and Rocket Fire Control System (AMRFCS) is a multipurpose motorised mortar and rocket applica-tion capable of observation and fire delivery by either its mortar or rocket systems.

Either system can be mounted on a single vehicle with a reaction time of less than 60 seconds. Change over time is less than 60 minutes.

The AMRfCS consists of:• AFireControlSystem(FCS)com-

prising of a Tablet PC, Human Machine Interface, Ballistic Calculations, Communications and Power Interface.
