Visit help.unc.edu or call 962- HELp During 2004, campus discussions were held about SACS with the Employee Forum, Faculty Council, the Conference of Chairs, the deans and student representatives for both graduate students and undergraduates. Through these discussions, the statement called "Making Critical Connections" that identifies three critical areas of focus was created. The first is curricular innovation. The revised undergraduate curriculum is expected to go into effect for fall of 2006. It includes a requirement to connect the foundations (composition and rhetoric, quantitative reasoning, foreign language, lifetime fitness) and approaches (physical and life sciences, social and behavioral sciences, humanities and fine arts) in ways that eliminate traditional boundaries. A second focus is internationalization. The range of activities throughout the entire University, from Health Affairs to Academic Affairs to Continuing Education, will be devoted to addressing global issues and further enhancing the University's status as a leading international University. The third area of focus will be to continue to expand and enhance the research experience for undergraduates.

During 2004, campus discussions were held about SACS with the Employee Forum, Faculty Council, the Conference of Chairs, the deans and student representatives for both graduate students and undergraduates.

Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) (http://www.sacs.org/) reaccreditation occurs every ten years. UNC-Chapel Hill is currently reviewing documentation to prepare for its 2006 review.

"Reaffirmation of accreditation occurs every 10 years -- and offers the University an opportunity to look carefully at the programs being offered as well as goals and priorities," said Owen, a professor in the Department of Dramatic Art. Owen recently was named senior associate dean for undergraduate education in the College of Arts & Sciences.

"It provides the chance to review all the documents and guidelines surrounding the academic programs to confirm we are doing what we are saying we are doing regarding degree programs as well as to look at an area in depth," she said.

SACS, in this sense, is a chance to stop and review missions and goals and refine them through a Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP).
