FROM THE DESK OF FR. JOE

In the liturgical calendar of the Church, this week is filled with important feasts. Today’s feast of the Birth of St. John the Baptist acknowledges John’s unique role, even while still in the womb when he “leaps for joy”, of proclaiming the presence of the Redeemer, Jesus Christ. We are being reminded by the Church that all of us are called to continue in John the Baptist’s role of being announcers of God’s presence in the world. On Friday the Church celebrates the feast of Sts. Peter and Paul the two great proclaimers of God’s presence. Peter makes his proclamation with his bold profession of faith following Jesus’ Resurrection from the dead when he three times proclaims his love for Christ and Christ tells him to “feed His lambs/sheep” and in doing so places Peter at the head of the Church. Paul, through his conversion, begins the task of proclaim-ing Christ’s message and uses his writings to challenge/encourage the early Christians to follow Jesus. On Saturday the Church celebrates the lives/martyrdom of many of the early Christians who had heard of Christ and His message, who lived that message out in their lives, and who were willing to die for Christ in some of the most horrendous forms of torture that people could come up with at that time. May the example of St. John the Baptist, Sts. Peter and Paul, and those early Christian martyrs be a source of strength for us today as we live out our Christian lives. A word of thanks is shared with Larry Odden who retires this coming Saturday from the position as our maintenance person /janitor. Larry has completed 6 years of working for Sacred Heart Church/Sacred Heart Area School. On behalf of both Parish Communities and the Sacred Heart School Community I would like to thank him for all the work he did to make our facilities some of the best cared for facilities in the area. We will miss him. At the same time I would like to welcome Michael Becker as the new maintenance person for our facilities. Welcome aboard Mike. YOUR NEW PASTOR: Please welcome Fr. Gabriel Walz as your new pastor beginning this coming Thursday at noon. As previously noted, Fr. Gabriel has been ordained for three years. He has been the associate pastor in the Cambridge/Isanti/Braham parish cluster for two years. Most recently he has been part of the Melrose/Meire Grove/Greenwald/Spring Hill parish cluster. As you welcomed me into your midst 7 years ago, please now welcome Fr. Gabriel into your midst. Support him with your prayers, your insights, and your love. GOOD BYE: As I complete my seven years as your pastor, I would like to express my deep gratitude to all of you who have been a part of my life. I came into your midst with the idea that I would remain with you until I retired. Well that time has now come. As of noon on Thursday I will be numbered among the retired priests of the Diocese of St. Cloud. The term retired may be inaccurate as I already have a number of weekends filled with commitments to help other priests as they go on vacations, etc. What I will truly retire from is parish administration. Being a priest and celebrating the Eucharist and the Sacraments I have loved doing throughout my priesthood. These past forty-four plus years of serving God and the Church have been a blessing in many different ways. When I was ordained on May 18, 1974 by Bishop George Speltz, little did I know what God and the bishops of the Diocese of St. Cloud would have in mind for me. Each of the assignments I have been given, being associate pastor at Sacred Heart Church, Sauk Rapids, and St. Mary Church, Alexandria to being the pastor of the parishes of Sacred Heart, Dent, Our Lady Victory, Fergus Falls, St. Andrew, Elk River, and finally the two parishes of Sacred Heart and St. Michael have truly been a blessing that I could not have imagined. My original thoughts were more along the line of being in some rural parish in Stearns County but they had other plans. In all of these parishes I found that the presence of God was alive in the lives of the parishioners. As I take leave of these two wonderful parishes I would like to say a word of deep gratitude to all of you who have become a part of the fabric of my life. Special words of gratitude are shared with the members of the staff from both parishes and the school. Thank you to all who have made me a part of the fabric of your life through weddings, baptisms, first Communions, confirmations, invitations to your homes, and the list could go on. Thank you! My wishes for you are that God may guide you as you strive to witness to God’s presence in these two communities. In a special way may God’s guidance lead the parishioners of St. Michael Parish in addressing their building addition concerns. Finally, please remember me in your prayers as I make the adjustment to this new portion of my journey of life. I will be living in Elrosa in the home that I grow up in which is two houses west of the Church. God’s blessing to all of you.

REGISTRATIONS

FOR CAMP ST.MICHAEL WILL BE

OUT NEXT WEEK!!!

The Nativity of Saint John the Baptist Tiny fingers and toes. A little yawn. A loud cry. An infant wrapped in

swaddling clothes. "What will this child be?" It is a question every parent

asks time and time again. As first steps are taken, as personalities

emerge, as a child shows interest in reading or drawing or climbing, the

question is on our lips. "What will this child be?" This question is asked

as John the Baptist is born. Will he be a priest like his father? Does his

strange, unexpected name signal a departure from that inheritance?

Could Elizabeth and Zechariah ever have predicted what would be?

Under the tutelage of his priestly father, John "became strong in spirit."

As an adult, John would retreat into the desert to preach repentance. He

would attract a large following and eventually attract the attention of the

rulers of the day. He would point out the adulterous ways of King Herod

and would find himself in prison. Eventually, he would be beheaded. But

today, he is a child, an infant newly born.

On this special feast, we're reminded of the great humility required

of parents. The character formation, the discipline and encouragement,

the violin lessons and soccer practices ? every parental effort is subjected

to the decisions of the child himself. Even children on a sure track by

high school graduation transform under life's circumstances. Entrusting

our children to God can be incredibly intimidating. "What will this child

be," especially when that transformation lies outside of my control? John

the Baptist's story might not have ended as his parents imagined. But he

is celebrated as the greatest of the prophets, as the one who prepared

the way for the Messiah. Here is the hope of all Christian parents -- that

our children would be raised in such a way that when people meet them,

they meet Jesus Christ. LPI
