WORKSHOPS – SESSION 2 11:50 am – 1:00 pm ARE WE HAVING FUN YET? ROOM 2 Mr. Tony Bellizzi This workshop will be about bringing greater joy into your life and your ministry. It will include special applications for middle school and high school faith formation programs. BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVES OF THE EXPERIENCE OF JOY ROOM 3 Rev. Michael P. Kerrigan The Bible offers insights into the various ways of experiencing joy. More than a personal positive feeling, joy is a transformative orientation that guides how a person lives one’s life. The Scriptural basis for the experiences of joy will be considered in seeing joy as: 1) a gift from God; 2) living as a disciple of Jesus; 3) a fruit of the Holy Spirit in witness of life; 4) joyful worship as expressed in psalms. ECUMENICAL FAMILIES: THE GIFTS TO BE SHARED ROOM 6 Rev. James Loughran, SA Many Catholics are marrying non-Catholic Christians these days. What gifts can each bring to make such marriages successful witnesses to the gospel in their extended families, their parishes and the bigger world? How do the sacred inform their lives together and their children? WHO HAS YOUR PARACHUTE? ROOM 7 Ms. Charlane Faught We all need help. God puts people in our lives to help us when we need it. Today children need many people to help them. We will focus on scripture to help our children learn the love of God and ways to deal with the many problems in their lives – bullying, peer pressure, guilt, self-image. There will be handouts and games to bring back to use in your classroom. STOP THE SILENCE, SPEAK UP! ROOM 8 Ms. Linda Fitzsimmons A main theme of Catholic Social Teaching is the inherent value, worth and dignity of each and every human being. Bullying is a form of health-harming behavior that is intentional, hurtful and persistent and in direct opposition to the principle of human dignity. During this workshop, catechists will learn about ways to address bullying and develop strategies to assist them in recognizing, preventing and confronting this destructive behavior. EXPERIENCE GOD’S WORD THROUGH VBS LIBRARY Ms. Elizabeth Kogler Help children begin to understand or deepen their faith through Vacation Bible School. The workshop will include ideas on recruiting volunteers, organizing activities and how to have lots of fun! We will examine ways of planning interesting lessons and creatively solving the “problems” of groups as they gather.

WORKSHOPS – SESSION 3 1:20 pm – 2:30 pm

THE JOY THAT COMES WITH DESIRE: C.S. LEWIS’ UNDERSTANDING OF CHRISTIAN JOY AS THAT “LONGING WHICH HAS NO FULFILLMENT” IN OUR EARTHLY LIVES ROOM 2 Rev. Arthur Mastrolia Lewis writes: “Joy, (in my sense), has indeed one characteristic and one only, in common with, (happiness and pleasure), the fact that anyone who has experienced it will want it again. Apart from that, and considered only in its quality, it might almost equally well be called a particular kind of unhappiness or grief. But it is a kind we want. I doubt whether anyone who has tasted it would ever, if both were in his power, exchange it for all the pleasures in the world. But then Joy is never in our power and pleasure often is.” Surprised by Joy, 1955 REJOICE AND BE GLAD ROOM 3 Rev. Ugo Nacciarone, SJ “The Lord asks everything of us, and in return he offers us true life, true happiness for which we were created. He wants us to be saints and not to settle for a bland and mediocre existence.” The true disciple is one who can find joy in the search for holiness because the disciple finds the presence of the Beloved in all of life and creation. EXPLAINING THE FAITH/MODERN APOLOGETICS ROOM 4 Mr. John Thompson In this workshop, we will explain how to talk with atheists, Christian fundamentalists, and Muslims, by answering the “Gotcha!” questions typical to each group. FINDING GOD AND JOY IN TROUBLED TIMES!! ROOM 5 Rev. Phil Latronico The reality of our lives often overcomes us. We think we are promised sunshine and rainbows. In reality, Jesus promises us his presence and grace in the good and bad of life. We will look at ways to discover God’s whereabouts in our daily lives. RIGHT AND WRONG – A LOST ART?? ROOM 6 Ms. Katherine Hamilton By 7th or 8th grade the waters of morality are so muddied by current culture – are we swimming upstream? Our discussion will include: models for tackling morality that engage our youth and open the doors for discussion.

UNDERSTANDING THE RCIA FOR CHILDREN ROOM 7 Mr. Oscar Cruz Unbaptized children of catechetical age are to be enrolled into the catechumenate process (the RCIA). Come and learn what this means to the child, to the family and to the parish.

COMUNIDADES PARROQUIALES: SIGNO DE ALEGRÍA PARA EL MUNDO ROOM 8 Rev. Hernan F. Paredes, SJ Hoy más que nunca nuestras parroquias están llamadas a crear comunidades de vida, respeto y comunicación. Todos somos responsables de llevar alegría para el mundo.

THE JUNIOR HIGH DILEMMA UPPER ROOM Ms. Peg Hoblin and Ms. Ernie Martin Come and hear some ideas and techniques that can be used in teaching junior high. These techniques will hopefully help capture their interest and find a personal relationship with God within their Christian community. So much has changed so drastically in the everyday lives of the young people of this generation that, as catechists, we must explore how to engage them in the faith for a full 90 minutes.

KEYNOTE SPEECH 2:50 pm – 4:05 pm GYMNASIUM

KNOW JESUS, KNOW JOY! Pope Francis has called the church to proclaim the Gospel with joy. Is it possible to be a Christian and not be filled with joy? What is the source of our joy? Christ crucified, risen and alive among us, is the joy that pervades every moment of a disciple’s day. How do we invite others to share in our joy? We will consider how to accompany others in the journey of the discovery of a love that changes everything!
