Dear Friends,

Jesus is gazing upon us with love. Being human, he understands what we are going through. Being God, his love for us is boundless. He is our best friend and our Savior. How comforting to know the Good Shepherd is at our side.

Thank you for “saving my Mom’s life.” Think of a person you know and cherish who is over 60 or over 80, or who has an underlying health condition. These are the people whose lives we are saving when we devotedly follow best health practices. When I don’t feel like washing my hands, or I start to get within 6 feet of another, I picture my Mom, or I picture one of you, and I do it for that one person. Making it personal helps motivate me. It also makes me grateful to you for saving our precious loved ones.

Thank you for the phone calls you are making to loved ones who may have a harder time connecting via the internet. You are making their day. “Whatsoever you do for them, you do for me [Jesus].”

I taught my mom Facetime. We practiced 5 times. Then the other kids have started to Facetime her.

She loves seeing us, not just hearing us, since we are not allowed in her building.

Virtual Hangouts: As a staff we are using Zoom a lot. My family had a virtual dinner and trivia game using Zoom. Whether it is Zoom or another program, we can do a lot to overcome interpersonal distancing during this time of physical distancing. Let us be creative!

God did not say: “Thou shalt not be tempested, thou shalt not be travailed, thou shalt not be dis-eased'; but he said, ‘Thou shalt not be overcome. And in the end, all shall be well.’ And all shall be well. And all manner of things shall be exceedingly well.” -- St. Julian of Norwich.

Sports: How will the Pats do without Tom Brady? How will the Red Sox get by until Chris Sale returns from Tommy John surgery the middle of next year? If the virus conditions get safe enough (no predictions from me on that!), both the Celts and Bruins could win it all!.

March 29 ~ The Fifth Sunday of Lent We’re almost at the end – today’s readings give us such hope. Ezekiel gives us God’s promise: “I will put my spirit in you that you may live...I have promised, and I will do it, says the LORD.” Jesus gives us His assurance of everlasting life: “Whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live, and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.” If your Lent has been less than you hoped for, try adding a few minutes each day to think about the everlasting life we are promised. Remember, God’s spirit is in YOU.

Volunteers Needed for Our Monthly Mass for the Sick Ministry

Would you like to volunteer a few hours once a month to a very rewarding Ministry here in the Sacred our collaborative? Our Monthly Mass for the Sick started six years ago with a mission to bring comfort and hope to those struggling with illness. We have grown into a wonderful group of 20+ people who come to Our Lady’s once a month for respite and community through Mass, Anointing of the Sick, inspiring talks, and joyous entertainment.

Our ministry team needs someone who can help out on the fourth Monday of every month, to assist the priest during Mass with readings, anointing services and Communion. We also need

people to help set up and decorate our tables ahead of time, make coffee, and/or bring some desserts and healthy snacks to share.

This Lent, Consider St. Vincent de Paul Would you like to help make a difference in our community and live out the Lenten call to almsgiving in a new way? The Collaborative’s Society of St. Vincent de Paul (SVDP) is looking to grow its ranks. SVDP helps people mostly with needs for housing, clothing, and food. When someone presents with a need, we conduct a home visit, where two members of the ministry visit with a person to hear their story and address their needs.

Another way to help is to join our Community Response Team. Occasionally, we get requests for furniture or household goods, such as an air conditioner, couch, desk, and kitchen items. When these requests come in, we send an email to our this team. If someone has the item, we coordinate delivery; if you don’t have the item, you simply hit “delete”. All told, we send fewer than 10 requests per year. It’s a volunteer opportunity that takes very little time but could have a very positive impact for a family. The more people on the list, the more likely we’ll be able to help.

New & Ongoing in Our Community

A Note from Rosemary Seibold Dear Friends, As the song says, “I’m so glad we’ve had this time together...” March is a big month in my family - four of the five of us have birthdays. This year, my husband Michael is turning 70 and I am turning 67. For this and numerous other reasons, I want to share with you that I will be retiring and leaving the Collaborative at the end of May.

The 16 years I have ministered here have been a real joy for me, and you have truly been a gift to me. It has also been an honor to work with our talented and caring staff members over the years. Most days, I turn into the parking lot at Our Lady’s and say a prayer of thanks to God for this community. When I came here, I was looking for a different way to be Church and for a way to deepen my own faith, while sharing that faith and love of God with others. Both have been realized.

I will miss you all a great deal, but I am very much at peace with this decision. It is wise that I take some time away from ministry. I have to address my back problem, among other things. But I assure you that I hope to continue some connection to the parish and col-laborative in the future; I will have to see what the Lord has in mind. Thank you, again, for being such a shining light of Jesus’ love to me and to the world, as you live the Gospel every day. May God shower many blessings on you in the days to come.

What things at a house break and need to be fixed? The dryer, the dishwasher, the oil burner, the air conditioner, the transmission in the car, the computer…So, someone comes to the house or you bring it somewhere – to be fixed.

It seems like the Gospel today is a fix-it story. Lazarus was sick, and he died because Jesus was late in arriving. Jesus comes late, but he can still fix him – at least that’s what Martha and Mary desire.

Jesus doesn’t seem to agree. He didn’t say, “I am the resurrector for Lazarus.” Instead, he says to Martha and Mary, “I am the Resurrection and the Life.” He resurrects Lazarus to reveal that he is the Resurrection and the Life.

The experiences recounted in the Sacred Scripture today may seem remote to us – Adam and Eve in the Garden, Jesus in the desert. They seem to be not only distant from our life but opposite to each other, only linked by temptation.

In the second century, St. Irenaeus wrote, “The Glory of God is the human person fully alive.”

Jesus is the Resurrection and the Life, and his mission is for us to have abundant life through him. Lazarus died again sometime after the recounting of today’s Gospel, but he died differently because Jesus had changed his life once before.

There was a day of prayer for a group of people yesterday, and one part of the day was to reenact the washing of the feet. A man told me about the experience of having his feet washed – he was self-conscious and hesitant as the priest washed his feet. But he also felt like Jesus was washing away all kinds of things from his whole life. This wasn’t a pedicure but a cure – a changed life. The relationship between this man and Christ changed. The man became more fully alive and more fully connected to Jesus as his Way, his Truth, and his Life.

Lent is offering that change for those preparing for Baptism at Easter, and the Christian life is offering it to the rest of us, today and every day, over and over again.

Take, Lord, and receive all my liberty,

my memory, my understanding, and my entire will,

all I have and call my own. You have given all to me. To you, Lord, I return it.

Everything is yours; do with it what you will.

Give me only your love and your grace; that is enough for me.

This prayer, which is found in St. Ignatius’ Spiritual Exercises, was deeply meaningful to Fr. John. He led people through the Spiritual Exercises many times during his priestly ministry, and the words of the prayer became even more poignant in his illness.

As April 21 approaches, the Pastoral Staff invites you to partici-pate in several opportunities to honor Fr. John’s memory and to celebrate his legacy on the first anniversary of his passing to eter-nal life.

First, we invite the entire Collaborative to join us on Sunday, April 19, at 10:00am at Our Lady’s for a special Mass of remem-brance for Fr. John. Following Mass, a reception will be held in the Lower Hall.

We also now announce plans for several projects to create perma-nent memorials to Fr. John at each parish.

At Sacred Heart, we will be adding Fr. John’s portrait to the pas-tors’ wall in the parish office, and we are planning for an installa-tion of the Suscipe prayer in the Grotto behind the convent.

At Our Lady’s, we will be installing a new marble slab in the Lower Hall with Fr. John’s name and dates of pastorship, adding to the existing memorial there. We are also planning to refurbish the Reconciliation Chapel in Fr. John’s memory, in order to make it a more prayerful space; it will include the Suscipe prayer.

We are seeking your financial support to make these memorial plans a reality. If you would like to contribute, please make checks payable to either “Sacred Heart” or “Our Lady’s” with “Fr. John” written in the memo line. All contributions are tax-deductible. Any funds donated in excess of the projects’ costs will be earmarked for the continued beautification and upkeep of these two parishes that Fr. John loved so deeply and served so faithfully.

Beyond Our Walls Lt. Paul Sullivan Scholarship

The Lt. Paul Sullivan Scholarship is now online at https://sites.google.com/view/lt-paul-j-sullivan-scholarship. The application deadline is April 16. The top scholarship is $5,000, with additional scholarships to be awarded. Last year, there were 9 scholarships totaling $23,500. We are looking for student -athletes who are actively involved in their school, religion, and community.

All Watertown students from any area high school who meet the requirements are eligible. Students from Newton, Waltham, Belmont and Cambridge who live within the areas of Sacred Heart, Newton; Sacred Heart, Watertown St. Mary, Waltham; St. Patrick, Watertown are also eligible. Care for Creation: Abstaining from Meat Is Good for the Planet, too!

Now that you've changed your light bulbs, why not consider changing your lunch? Make combating climate change a Lenten practice by reducing or eliminating your meat consumption for Lent! Meat and dairy, particularly from cows, have an outsize impact on carbon emissions, with livestock accounting for around 14.5% of the world’s greenhouse gases each year. That’s roughly the same amount as the emissions from all the cars, trucks, airplanes, and ships combined in the world today! Perhaps, besides Fridays, we could add more days of abstaining from meat to our personal Lenten practice as a way to love God, ourselves, our neighbors, and our Earth.

Religious Education News Due to the stay-at-home advisory in place for the next two weeks, we will not be actively collecting Easter food bags for the Religious Ed Program until further notice. Coffee Hour after 9:00am Mass All are welcome at Coffee Hour in the MacKenzie Center, immediately following the 9:00am Mass on most Sunday mornings. It’s is a great opportunity for us to form the community we want our parish to be. Bagels, donuts, coffee, OJ, and other treats are offered. Families and folks of all ages are welcome to attend.

Due to coronavirus, coffee hour is currently on hiatus.

Join the Sacred Heart Choir! Music Ministry at Sacred Heart is enriched each Sunday at 9:00am Mass by our Liturgical Choir. The choir is always looking for new voices, of all levels, to join the ranks! The choir rehearses Thursday evenings 7:30-9:00pm in the church and gathers at 8:15am on Sundays to rehearse before Mass. Joining the choir is a terrific way to meet fellow parishioners who share a love of the liturgy and of singing. Interested singers can join at any point during the year. Our Lady’s News

Update about Easter Dinners Many of you know that we typically offer outreach in the form of groceries for dinner to local families in need at the holidays (Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter). Due to the coronavirus outbreak and the impossibility of guaranteeing safety for the dozens of donors, recipients, and volunteers involved in this project, we are not able to offer our Easter outreach this year. Instead, we are reaching out to those families who would usually receive groceries and offering non-perishables instead. If you would like to volunteer for this occasion outreach, please contact Kate at [email protected]. Thank you!

Join Our Lady's Adult Choir Looking for more ways to share your talents/love for liturgy? Join Our Lady's Adult Choir - we're always looking for new voices, of all levels, to join the ranks! We lead the congregation in song at the Sunday 10:00am Mass twice a month and at Holy Days and other special celebrations. Joining the choir is a terrific way to meet fellow parishioners who share a love of the liturgy and of singing. Interested singers can join at any point during the year. This Lent, Give Hope to Honduras! One of the ways we support our sister parish in Honduras is with our Lenten campaign to support their parish scholarship program. Since 2011, we’ve supported the parishioners in San Marcos in lifting up the poorest young children and teen-agers there, so their families can afford necessities for school like shoes, books and supplies, transportation, and even food. Each week during Lent in the bulletin, we will share a few of the students’ letters, written to thank you:

Pastoral Care of the Sick: We are most eager to help any-one who cannot celebrate Mass with us in church. If you or a loved one wishes to receive the Sacraments of the Anointing of the Sick, Eucharist, or Reconciliation, please call the par-ish offices. The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is celebrated after all parish Masses on the first full weekend of each month. Please also notify us of hospitalizations, so that we may be of help.

Sacraments of Initiation: For adults interested in Baptism, Confirmation, or joining the Catholic Church, please contact Nick Frega; for high school Confirmation, contact Michelle

Solomon at Sacred Heart or Kristina Preman at Our Lady's; for older children to be baptized or to receive Holy Commun-ion, contact Michelle Solomon at Sacred Heart or Rosemary Seibold at Our Lady's.

Infant Baptisms: Infant Baptisms are celebrated at Mass or on special Sundays throughout the year. Parents are asked to call the parish office to begin the process. A program of prep-aration is offered to all parents. For more information, please visit our website.
