Dear Sisters and Brothers in the Lord, Welcome!
I am grateful for your presence with the Sacred Heart worshiping community as we
celebrate our Eucharistic Liturgy for the 20th Sunday in Ordinary Time. We are blessed through your prayerful participation. May the Word of God enlighten your mind and the Bread of Life nourish your faith. Today’s Gospel tells us about Jesus’ encounter with “a Canaanite woman.” Although it ends well, their interaction in the beginning seems a little testy. The disciples seem annoyed that a Canaanite woman would be so aggressive in approaching Jesus and requesting that her daughter be healed. They want her sent away. Jesus, himself, seems to put her off in acknowledging his mission “to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” The mother doesn’t give up her quest. She won’t be put off! She calls Jesus, “Lord, Son of David,” revealing her belief in Jesus’ power to hear. Her persistence in asking that her daughter be freed from the demon tormenting her confirms her faith. Jesus heals her daughter saying, “O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish.”
I love the perseverance of the Canaanite mother. She wouldn’t give up after the initial reaction of the Apostles and Jesus. I see
this Canaanite woman as a role model for all of us. Like her, we are called to be persistent in our prayer. Perseverance in prayer speaks to our faith and trust that the Lord will do what is best for us, even when our request is unanswered. Reflect on this mother’s faith, her persistence in seeking healing for her daughter. Pray that you would be blessed with the grace to persevere in dealing with the challenges of faithful discipleship. Peace be with you! God bless,
Fr. McKee

Climate change is creating hotter, drier environments where crops wilt or never grow at all in parts of southern Africa. With a second year of harvests having failed in most of Zimbabwe, 2.4 million people are facing a lack of food. CRS is partnering with Caritas Harare in Zimbabwe to react quickly to the drought emergency by organizing a series of seed fairs to help provide farmers seeds for drought-resistant, quick-growing crops.
