Entrance: Christ Be Beside Me
Christ be beside me, Christ be before me,
Christ be behind me, King of my heart.
Christ be within me, Christ be below me,
Christ be above me, never to part.
Christ on my right hand, Christ on my left hand,
Christ all around me, shield in the strife.
Christ in my sleeping, Christ in my sitting,
Christ in my rising, light of my life.
Christ be in all hearts thinking about me;
Christ be on all tongues telling of me.
Christ be the vision in eyes that see me;
In ears that hear me, Christ ever be.
First Reading: Jeremiah 20:7-9
Responsorial Psalm
My soul is thirsting for you, O Lord my God.
Second Reading: Romans 12:1-2
Gospel: Matthew 16:21-27
Nicene Creed
I believe in one God,
the Father almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all things visible and invisible.
I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ,
the Only Begotten Son of God,
born of the Father before all ages.
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us men and for our salvation
he came down from heaven,
and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary,
and became man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,
he suffered death and was buried,
and rose again on the third day
in accordance with the Scriptures.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory
to judge the living and the dead
and his kingdom will have no end.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son
is adored and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins
and I look forward to the resurrection of the dead
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
Offertory: As the Deer Longs
As the deer longs for running streams,
so I long, so I long, so I long for you.
Athirst my soul for you, the God who is my life!
When shall I see, when shall I see, see the face of God?
Echoes meet as deep is calling unto deep,
over my head, all your mighty waters, sweeping over me.
Continually the foe delights in taunting me:
“Where is God, where is your God?”
Where, O where are you?
Communion: Now We Remain We hold the death of the Lord
deep in our hearts.
Living, now we remain
with Jesus, the Christ.
Recessional: _______Christ Be Our Light
Christ, be our light!
Shine in our hearts, shine through the darkness.
Christ, be our light!
Shine in your church gathered today.
Longing for light, we wait in darkness.
Longing for truth, we turn to you.
Make us your own, your holy people,
Light for the world to see.
Longing for peace, our world is troubled.
Longing for hope, many despair.
Your word alone has pow’r to save us.
Make us your living voice.

Let’s Continue Praying Together I warmly invite all of our parishioners and friends to continue praying for an end to the coronavirus
pandemic. Let us seek our Blessed Mother’s special intercession on all those whose lives were lost to the virus, on
their family members and friends who mourn their passing, on all medical personnel, first responders, social workers,
counselors and therapists dedicated to assisting others in these difficult days. Let us pray for all those whose
livelihoods were changed or lost. Let us remember those who have come to the need of the most severely impacted:
the poor, those trying to make ends meet, those in need of basic necessities. We must not grow lax in our prayer for
healing and protection in this time of pandemic.
Of course: please continue to wear masks and sanitize your hands when coming into the church.

Xavarian Mission Appeal– August 29-30
This weekend, we welcome the Fr. Michael Davitti of the Xave-
rian Missionaries for the Annual Mission Appeal. Fr. Michael is a 77 year
old missionary priest, of Italian origin, newly assigned to the Xave-
rian Community of Wayne, NJ, as Director of the “Interfaith dialogue
project” for the Province. He is also Rector of the community in Wayne
NJ.
Fr. Michael spent 23 years in Sierra Leone, West Africa, and was evacuated to Italy in 1998
and, because of the 10-year-long “Diamond war” ravaging that country. After a few months, he was
assigned to the United States. He has been a Lecturer of “Cultural Anthropology” and “Phenomenology
of Religion” in Parma (Italy) and at Gbarnga College (Liberia-West Africa) for over ten years. Fr.
Michael worked for 12 years in Chinatown Chicago as Pastor of St. Therese Chinese Mission, and 3
years in Manila, Philippines as Campus minister at Far Eastern University. In 2014 he was assigned to
Wayne, N.J.
The Xaverian Missionaries were founded in 1895 in Parma, Italy, by St. Guido Maria Conforti.
As they are exclusively a foreign mission society, with about 700 members, the Xaverian Missionaries
(Priests and Brothers) depend greatly on proceeds from friends and benefactors. They began serving in
mainland China in 1899, among non-Christians until the early 1950s. Expelled from there they were
invited to serve in other countries in Asia, Africa and the Americas. Nowadays they carry out their
service in the following 20 countries: Bangladesh, Brazil, Burundi, Cameroon, Chad, Colombia, the
Democratic Republic of Congo, France, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, Mozambique, the Philippines,
Sierra Leone, Spain, Taiwan, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
A Note from the Missionaries: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic we haven't been able to support
as much our Missions overseas as in the past, thanks to your generosity and love. If you were to be so
kind as to assist us in some way...May the Good Lord reward you many times over with his choicest
blessings, graces, good health and much peace. Thank you!

The Twenty-Second Sunday in Ordinary Time: Deny, Take Up, Follow
As we all remember from our elementary school Language Arts classes, verbs are action words! Walking,
singing, dancing, playing….all imply that we are doing something; that we are actively engaged.
In our Gospel passage today, Jesus invites us to count the cost of discipleship. It’s easy to say, “I’ll follow you,
Lord,” but not always so easy to do! Being a disciple of Jesus is not simply a matter of saying, “Yes, Lord, count me
in!” Being a disciple means that we are actively engaged in the missionary apostolate given us by Jesus in the Gospel of
Matthew (28:19-20) “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of
the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And know that I am with
you always, to the very end of the age.”
Today’s Gospel passage calls us into action. Jesus tells his disciples, and all future disciples, that as his
followers we must first deny ourselves. What does that mean? We must put God and others before ourselves. We must
consider our priorities, our needs, our wants and our desires to make sure that they do not impede us from serving God
and others - that is, from closely following Jesus. It’s not easy to deny ourselves in a society and consumer culture that
values hoarding - even if others don’t have enough; that applauds getting ahead – even at the expense of another; that
wastes food, water and energy – even though these precious resources are scarce or not readily available to so many
throughout the world. Are there material things in my life that I can deny myself of in order that I may reach out to
someone in need? Are there any attitudes, opinions, or judgments that I might deny myself of in order that I remain
focused on the important things: judging rightly, showing mercy, having pure intentions, remaining faithful to God?
Does anything compete with God for the primary place in my thoughts, words or actions?
Jesus invites us to take up our cross each day. Most people that I know want to put their cross down – and leave
it down! Even under the weight of his heavy cross, despite his physical weakness and sore body, after multiple beatings
and thirsting for water and compassion, Jesus continued to stay the course and conclude his journey to Mt. Calvary.
Crosses come in all different kinds. Some are physical, others are spiritual, while still others are emotional or
psychological. All are painful and difficult to carry, whether they are our own crosses or those of our loved ones. Like
Jesus, we cannot focus solely on the weight of the cross. His cross was an expression of fidelity to the Father. After his
Resurrection Jesus didn’t bring up the passion and cross to the disciples, rather he presented himself in his glorified
body, offered them peace and showed them that there was life after the cross and the grave. We too can experience
relief when we bring those crosses to the Lord and allow him to help us carry them. Even if the pain endures, our hope
is in the glory of the resurrection.
Jesus invites us to follow him – the way, the truth and the life. He shows us the way to the Father, the way of
mercy and forgiveness. He shows us the way of service, washing the feet of the disciples and telling us to do the same.
He feeds us with his Body and Blood, the food which promises eternal life. As we attempt to follow Jesus more and
more closely, we must be prepared for the other voices that will call out after us, promising things they cannot deliver,
distracting our focus on the Lord and leading us away from him, rather than to him.
As we listen to the Scriptures this weekend, let us renew our response to the Lord’s call to deny ourselves, take
up our cross, and follow him. Let us also remember the Lord’s promise to be with us at all times, leading us, supporting
us, encouraging us as we make this journey of discipleship.
Please Share the Invitation to our Young Adult Mass Our next Young Adult Mass will be held THIS Sunday, August 30th, at 7:00 pm in the church. All
young adults in the parish, 18-39 years of age are invited to join us for this Mass. Please encourage any young
adult in the parish to participate. The spiritual nourishment we received from celebrating the Eucharist and
listening to the proclamation of God’s Word together brings many blessings for all those participating. The
fellowship and camaraderie is always an added, special blessing we share.
Many of those who participate regularly at our Young Adult Masses tell me how much they look forward
to these Masses, how much they “need” them, and how happy they are for having participated. That’s great news
to share…so please extend the invitation.
No RSVP is necessary – just show up, greet the Lord and one another, listen to God’s Word, pray with and
for one another and go home renewed and refreshed as members of the Christian community! This Mass in open
to all young adults of the parish and beyond!
