Sacred Heart Catholic Church is a very blessed parish generally speaking. This summer for

approximately five weeks we became even more blessed because of the presence of

Seminarian Phillip Szabo, who will be entering his fourth year of Seminary at Mount St. Mary’s

Seminary. Our parish became his parish for the short time he was with us. Phillip’s

enthusiasm and his sweet personality endeared him to all of the parishioners he encountered.

He stepped in and embraced our parish life by taking on projects that have made an impact

and a difference. He repaired various yard maintenance tools, pulled weeds around the

church buildings and sidewalks and flowerbeds, and volunteered to help unload a delivery

truck with food for our Sacred Heart Food Pantry, volunteered in the Food Pantry serving our

less fortunate neighbors, and hosting a men’s gathering at the Rectory.

While under the pastoral care of Father Sebastian, Phillip experienced a wide variety of Parish

Life events. He arrived just in time to participate in our Sacred Heart Vacation Bible School

Week. Adult volunteers and the high school aged volunteers as well as the many children that

attended VBS enjoyed Phillip’s involvement in all the activities that were held.

Every two weeks during the summer months, a family from the parish will host a “LIT-NIC” at

their home. The “LIT” part is the Mass (Liturgy) and the “NIC” part is the potluck picnic after

Mass. Phillip was able to attend and experience the faith-filled fellowship of one of our

LitNics.

Also, while here, Phillip attended a Knights of Columbus meeting, a parish adult ed study on

the Eucharist, a Parish Pastoral Committee meeting, visited the sick of our parish and enjoyed

Seminarian Phillip Szabo

an afternoon at our annual Parish Picnic. Our young people enjoyed Phillip’s knowledge on

God-centered topics and also his guitar music by organizing and leading a high-school and

college aged Girls Night and a Guys Night. Other activities he has organized are bible studies

for young children in their homes, Ora et Labora Days (days of prayer, exercise, yardwork, and

lunch), open to anyone, and a hike to Cascade Falls in Pembroke, Virginia. As a parish, it was

our privilege and honor to be able to celebrate Phillip on his 28th birthday!

Even though our time with Phillip has been short, his impact, example, and enthusiasm will

remain with us forever.

We will miss you, Phillip, but please know as you continue your journey to becoming one of

the Lord’s beloved Priests, you take with you our gratitude, our love and especially our

prayers!

Presence: THE MYSTERY OF THE EUCHARIST

A program from FORMED for Summer 2018

The Presence program is comprised of four sessions: God Is with Us, The Story of the Eucharist, Bread for the

Journey, and Biblical Foundations of the Eucharist.

• God Is with Us examines God’s saving presence with his people throughout salvation history,

culminating in the Incarnation and his abiding Real Presence in the Eucharist.

• The Story of the Eucharist looks at how the Eucharist was prefigured in the Old Testament as well as

in Jesus’s miracles and teaching.

• Bread for the Journey focuses on the necessity of the Eucharist for our spiritual nourishment and

explores the different parts of the Liturgy of the Mass.

• Biblical Foundations of the Eucharist responds to objections to the Church’s doctrine of the Eucharist

with biblical apologetics. Understanding and responding to the objections of those who disagree with us

(apologetics) is an important part of evangelization.

Session 2: The Story of the Eucharist SESSION OBJECTIVES

• Recognize how the Eucharist is prefigured in the Old Testament, especially in the sacrifice of Melchizedek, the Passover, and the manna in the wilderness. • Recognize how the Eucharist is prefigured in Jesus’s miracles of the Wedding Feast at Cana and the multiplication of the loaves. • Understand that Jesus teaches explicitly about the Eucharist in John 6. • Recognize that the Eucharist is the new fruit of the Tree of Life. • Understand that the Eucharist is the memorial of Christ’s sacrifice.
