O ur Lad y of Perp etua l H elp Sacred Heart Parish is under the care of the Redemporist. In 1732, when St. Alphonsus founded the Redemptorist Fathers and Brothers, he placed the community under the care and protection of Our Blessed La-dy. He wrote the Rule of Life for Redemptorists that they were to have an extraordinary love for the Mother of God and they must promote love and devotion to her among the people to whom they

minister. This is why Tuesday Devotions are held after the 11am Mass and again at 7pm. How much time do you spend in the evening looking at TV… hours go by and often you are bored and even annoyed at the programs. Come and be refreshed and strengthened and blessed by prayers to Our Lady; a short sermon and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Sure-ly there must be some intention, some need, some blessing that you stand in need of. Place it in the hands of Our Blessed Lady. “Never was it known that anyone who fled to her protection or sought her intercession was left unided.” St. Bernad)

TRUE BLINDNESS

Bartimaeus caused a stir. Normally he sat by the side of the road being a “good blind beggar.” But one day Jesus passed nearby. Bartimaeus jumped up and called out to Jesus. We can imagine him turning toward the direction of the commotion and noise. Bartimaeus probably had his arms out-stretched as he shouted out to the son of David.

The people who knew him were embarrassed by his outburst. They tried to hush him up and get him to sit back down by the road-side. Their actions spoke volumes: “Bartimaeus, you’re not fit for Jesus.” But it was okay for them and other “sighted” people to follow Jesus. In to-day’s readings, we learn that true blindness is not a condition of our eyes but of our hearts.

Sts. Simon & Jude Little is known of these two Apostles, whose names are al-ways linked in the Gospel ac-counts, St. Simon was surnamed the Zealot for his rigid adher-ence to the Jewish law and to the Canaanite law. He was one of

the original followers of Christ. Western tradition is that he preached in Egypt and then went to Persia with St. Jude, where both suffered martyrdom. Eastern tradition says Simon died peacefully at Edessa.

Jude is so named by Luke and Acts. Matthew and Mark call him Thaddeus. He is not mentioned else-where in the Gospels, except, of course, where all the apostles are mentioned.

Ancient writers tell us that he preached the Gospel in Judea, Samaria, Idumaea, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Lybia. According to Eusebius, he returned to Jerusalem in the year 62, and assisted at the election of his brother, St. Simeon, as Bishop of Jerusalem.

St Jude is invoked in desperate situations because his New Testament letter stresses that the faithful should persevere in the environment of harsh, difficult circumstances, just as their forefathers had done before them. Therefore, he is the patron saint

St. Vincent de Paul: Recap of Fiscal Year ended September 30, 2015 One hundred forty active members, associate members and other volunteers are joyfully serving our needful neighbors in New Smyrna Beach, Edgewater and Oak Hill, providing them with food and assistance with utilities, transportation, RX’s and other necessities. We are the only Volusia agency which delivers food directly to homes and to homeless persons. The comparison of last year’s figures with this year’s is interesting: This year we

♦ served 8,138 persons, 7% over last year ♦ spent $34,109 on food, 26% more than last year ♦ assisted with utilities in the amount of $21,541, 9% over last year ♦ spent 5% less on gasoline ($3,704), 5% less on household items ($330), 8% more on motels ($2,535), and .6%

more on miscellaneous services ($1,507). ♦ spent $5,440, on office expenses 16% less than the year before.

Total client expenses were $63,965, a 16% increase over the previous year. The services provided were only possible due to your generosity in giving money and actively volunteering—the Lord hears the cry of the poor. The conference of St. Vincent de Paul of St. Gerard and Sacred Heart is one body made up of many parts: beggars, donors, visitation teams, telephone teams, food procurers and stocking and bagging personnel, data entry folks and many more be-hind-the-scenes helpers. We do it for the love of Our Lord. The pay is heavenly. We meet each month on the first and third Tuesday evenings at 6:30p at St. Gerard’s.

You are needed. Please join us,
