ALTADENA/PASADENA BLACK CATHOLIC ASSOCIATION: “To Be Black and Catholic: A Formation Series” Continues First Thursdays in

Altadena The Altadena/Pasadena Black Catholic Association presents a yearlong seminar series journeying through Black Catholicism. The main speaker, Mr. Jared An-derson, will focus on Black Catholic spirituality, cat-echesis, and liturgy, as well as history, Catholic social teachings, and social justice. Sessions will be held at St. Elizabeth of Hungary Parish in Altadena. The se-ries will continue on the first Thursday each month at 7:00 p.m. with occasional guest speakers. The sche- dule of topics is as follows: January 2016: Justice and Hope February 2016: Catholic Social Teaching and Racism March 2016: The Paschal Mystery April 2016: The Black Christ May 2016: A Black Catholic Understanding of The Church June 2016: To Be Black, Catholic, and Womanist July 2016: Black Catholic History August 2016: Scripture in the Life of the Black Catho-lic. MANIFESTANDO AL ESPÍRITU

El tiempo de Navidad fi-naliza este domingo con el Bautismo del Señor. Esta fiesta es hermana de la fiesta de la semana pasada, la Epifanía. Cada una ellas celebra una "epifanía", o manifestación del Espíritu de Dios en Jesús --primero en su nacimiento y ahora en su bautismo. El Espíritu Divino se manifiesta en todas las lecturas bíblicas de la fiesta. El Salmo 104 destaca al Espíritu de Dios que crea y renueva la tierra, mientras que la lectura de Isaías describe a Dios restaurando a Israel. En el relato de Lucas del bautismo del Señor el Espíritu Santo desciende sobre Jesús. MANIFESTING THE SPIRIT

The Christmas season closes this Sunday with the Baptism of the Lord. This feast is a sis-ter to last week's feast of the Epiphany. Each of them cele-brates an "epiphany," or a manifestation of the Spirit of God in Jesus--first in his birth, and now at his baptism. The divine Spirit is manifested in all of the scriptures for this feast. Psalm 104 highlights the Spir-it of God creating and renewing the earth, while the reading from Isaiah describes God restoring Israel. In Luke's account of the baptism of the Lord the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus. RESPECT LIFE. PRAY THE ROSARY!

On Friday, January 22nd, 2016 marks the 43rd anniversary of the Roe V. Wade Supreme Court decision. The Knights of Co-lumbus San Gabriel Valley Chapter will once again hold their annual Respect Life Rosary in front of the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals Building located at 125 S. Grand Avenue, Pasadena, CA 91105. This peaceful one-hour event will begin at 12-noon and should conclude by 1 PM. All are invited to attend and pray the Rosary. ELECTRIC CANDLE RACKS During the next several weeks, you will notice a new addition in our church. We will install new electronic devotional candle racks in the side chapel of the Statue of Sacred Heart. Many of our parishioners have ex-pressed a desire to have the candles for devotional purposes. We choose electric over wax or petroleum based candles for very good reasons. Burning open flame candles are a health hazard and result in smoke damage and discoloration of the interior of the church. Also in many instances Insurance Companies are add-ing hefty premiums to any location burning open flame candles. The new electronic candles are very traditional in appearance and the symbolism behind the electric candle remains the same. The Smartlite Candles are designed with the latest mi-crochip technology and are very simple to use---Just press the top of the candle cover and the candle lights. This new technology allows the candles to operate in both VOTIVE and MEMORIAL. The VOTIVE mode is the normal function of lighting a candle for a speci-fied time while the MEMORIAL mode is an extended time period. MEMORIAL candles are offered in memory of a deceased beloved or simply dedicated on behalf of a family or as a special thanksgiving. A memorial plaque is inscribed on the candle cover to indicate the purpose. Parishioners can purchase a MEMORIAL candle on an annual basis, 5 year or 10 year time frame or as an eternal flame. “TUESDAYS’ TALK SHOW” In the spirit of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, our Parish Evangeli-zation Team invites everyone to join us in a series of “Talk Show” about different topics relating to mercy and compas-sion as outlined by the Holy Father, Pope Francis I. The meet-ings will be hands on with subject matters relating to all. These evenings will happen every 4th Tuesday of the month, begin-ning January 2016 in the Ministry Center at 7:00 PM. Stay tuned for more information regarding this matter.
