A REFLECTION ON HOLY SATURDAY

The altar is bare. The tabernacle is empty. The holy water fonts are dry. In churches where the statues were covered before the Fifth Sunday of Lent, only the crosses may be seen, their veils having been removed after the Celebration of the Passion of the Lord. The Sacred Heart, Mary, Joseph and other Saints remain draped in purple. The large cross which was reverently kissed by so many of the faithful the day before remains in the front of the church, with a lighted candle on either side. Otherwise, there are no adornments. The lights are turned low, the church is silent, the confessional is dark. All the regular services and activities are suspended. It is Holy Saturday. According to the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, “On Holy Saturday the Church waits at the Lord’s tomb in prayer and fasting, meditating on his Passion and Death and on his Descent into Hell, and awaiting his Resurrection.” Church law prohibits the celebration of any Sacraments on this day except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick. No one may receive Communion until the Easter Vigil, including the sick and homebound, except in danger of death. By these customs the Church hopes to create the conditions for the faithful to experience a little of the pain of separation from the Savior which was felt by his Mother, the apostles, Mary Magdalen, and his friends, when Christ in his human soul descended to the realm of the dead. He was gone from them. He has momentarily gone from our churches. It is disturbing to contemplate an empty tabernacle. Perhaps the least understood verses of Sacred Scripture and of the Creed are those which speak of Jesus’ descent to hell. “In [the spirit] he also went to preach to the spirits in prison, who had once been disobedient while God patiently waited in the days of Noah during the building of the ark, in which a few persons, eight in all, were saved through water…” “For this is why the gospel was preached even to the dead that, though condemned in the flesh in human estimation, they might live in the spirit in the estimation of God” (1 Peter 3: 19 & 4: 6). Christ did not descend to the hell of the damned, where there is no hope, but to the place which the Old Testament names as Sheol in Hebrew, or Hades in its Greek translation. It is the temporary abode of the souls of the just who could not enter into the vision of God until the sacrifice of Christ was completed. Thus, the New Testament reveals that the redemption wrought by Christ was not limited only to the people of his lifetime and after, but also for the righteous who lived and died before him. For God “wills all people to be saved, and to come to the knowledge of the truth” (1 Timothy 2: 4). The only official prayer of the Church for Holy Saturday is the Liturgy of the Hours, which is prayed five times every day of the year and always reflects the liturgical calendar. This commemoration is unique in that it does not have its own liturgy. This does not lessen its importance, but provides the space to allow the faithful to remain prayerfully watchful in their hearts. Too many prayers, too many words could stifle the Spirit. Now is the time to quietly consider the bruised body of Jesus lying in the tomb. It is not obligatory, but the Church recommends that we continue the fast and abstinence of Good Friday. After the arduous liturgies of Holy Week – arduous as much for the emotions they provoked as for the energy they required – Holy Saturday provides a brief respite before the excitement of the Resurrection.

In truth, Holy Saturday is a busy day for everyone involved in the preparation of the Easter liturgies. Others are busy also, for American society no longer respects Christian holy days, and the banks, post offices, and stores are open on Good Friday as well as Holy Saturday. Some of the most devout Christians are obligated to work. Nevertheless, it would be a great personal loss not to take some time to reflect on the mystery of Holy Saturday. It has its own significance which should not be lost in the rush to Easter.

Live the Liturgy Today some of the most poignant themes of human life come into clear central focus: the feeling of being praised and honored, fear, anxiety, betrayal, despair, doubt, uncertainty, trust, hope, sadness, separation, suffering, death, determination, and courage. These are the emotions and realities that every human being wrestles with often. Jesus, the Son of God, encounters them all. As we journey through life, we have to confront the existential meaning of each of these things. How do they fit into the bigger picture? Jesus shows us most clearly that even those things we fear the most lose their power when we discover that we are being led to new life. Suffering is redemptive. Sin and death give way to grace and life and God’s unconditional love conquers all. May we see in Jesus’ Way of the Cross the path of truth we all must follow.

The 2018 Annual Parish Appeal is underway. Our goal is $150,000. In the first nineteen weeks of the 2018 Appeal two hundred seventy-three families have pledged more than $101,100 of which $80,062 has been received. The Appeal will support continuing operations of the parish and help us fund a few necessary projects. These include upgrade of the HVAC system in the Church and Parish Life Center, improvement of the church sound system, including hearing assist devices, and improved use of elec-tronic media in support of parish communications. Please complete the Intention Card you received in your letter from Father Scott and place it in the envelope in the col-lection basket or mail the envelope to the Parish Office Or, you may use the Parish Appeal envelope from your packet of envelopes to make your donation. Through Worship

Singing in church is an important part of our worship, and has been since the church was es-tablished. It helps us connect to the scripture readings, and reinforces our prayer and actions of worship in a communal way.

To help gauge and ignite the level of participa-tion in our parish, Kevin Myers is offering a wor-ship service to help ignite the fire of congrega-tional singing. The service will take place on March 26th (Monday evening) at 8:00 pm and is filled with many spiritually invigorating songs in many different styles.

Please consider coming out for this prayer-filled and inspiring evening service as we continue to ignite our communal efforts of raising a joyful noise unto the Lord! This event is for EVERY-ONE and the more people we have involved, the better the service will be. Good Friday Collection for the Holy Land

On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, we celebrate the mystery of the Lord’s Passion, contemplating the sacrifice by which Jesus redeemed the human race from sin and death. It also has been our longstand-ing tradition as Catholics to offer alms in support of the Catholic Community in the Holy Land.

As directed by the Holy Father, Pope Francis, funds generated by this collection support programs and services in the Holy Land. Support is needed to maintain the sacred places, to provide educational and pastoral programs as well as outreach pro-grams for the poor through established charitable institutions.

On behalf of those Christians and others in so much need, we seek your most generous and sacrificial support of the Good Friday Collection for the Ho-ly Land on March 30, 2018.

Saint Faustina Kowalska was a Polish nun who received mystical revelations in which Jesus showed her his heart, the source of mercy and expressed his wish that the Feast of Mercy be celebrated.

Jesus told St. Faustina that this Feast of Mercy would be a very special day when "all the divine floodgates through which graces flow are opened". (Diary 699) Jesus prom-ised that "The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain the complete forgiveness of sins and punishment." (Diary 699)

Note: The Church allows for one to go to Confession for up to about 20 days, before or after Divine Mercy Sunday to obtain the Plenary Indulgence.

Tom has 15 years experience as a Joseph’s People volunteer and as a professional career coach. He has helped hundreds of professionals, executives, from all backgrounds and geographies successfully transition from one career to another. Tom has served as past chair of the Chester County Workforce Investment Board and was instrumental in strengthening the service to job seekers in Chester County through CareerLink and continuing education programs. Tom currently provides executive coaching on leadership, sales, customer ser-vice, innovation, as well as, career transitions and personal growth. Tom began his career as a Principal Investigator for the USEPA developing air pollution control technology, federal rules, and providing guidance to state and local agencies across the US. Family Service of Chester County’s new program – ZOOM – has more than 150 clients enrolled in its transportation program that connects area nonprofit clients with free transportation to and from medical appointments. Since ZOOM’s launch in April 2017, more than 450 trips have been completed by our dedicated volunteer drivers. The demand for this transportation service is very high, and ZOOM is in immediate need for additional volunteers to participate in this personal and flexible experience. Many of the clients enrolled in the ZOOM program would otherwise miss important medical appointments, simply because they lack safe and reliable transportation. Saturday, April 14th, 8 am Meet in front of the Assumption BVM Church

We are in need of volunteers to help with the Parish Clean-Up Day. Since we have done such a marvelous job over the years with the inside of the buildings, we will concentrate on the exterior areas this year. Please come pre-pared to work outside cleaning up overgrown brush, downed trees and general clean up. If available, please bring work gloves, rakes, wheel barrows, pick up trucks,……you get the idea!!
